In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
RainyDay1235MemberBut back to topic, I agree. In fact I think McCain is simply TOO OLD to be president. I think the age limit should be decreased. Sorry, it’s human nature. We only live so long on average. His history is especially iffy. I swear if it were someone on the Dem side – I would have it on the brain as well.
She has already stated “she is ready to be president” if need be, and McCain is spending more time talking about Palin than himself during speeches now. It’s very odd. And yes, very relevant.
Supposedly her “planned focus” (per McCain) will be on US oil and energy policy. I think the fact that she is coming from “drill, baby, drill” mentality is frighteningly relevant.

AnonymousInactiveThe other examples cited protect public health or safety. ie, seatbelts, helmets. You can not dispute the facts showing these measures save lives. It is the job of government to protect the welfare of it’s citizens.
I think we should use our own bags. It’s a good idea. It would reduce trash. It would help the environment. We know they never biodegrade. It could possibly protect sea life. All noble ideals.
I don’t think it should be mandatory without a vote. It does not fall under a public safety umbrella. And all these good intentions aside, if we really cared about the environment, we’d ban cars, not bags.
Yes, you have to start somewhere. That’s where a vote comes in. It is an opinion about what the priority should be. I’d rather see hard un-recyclable plastic packaging banned way before a product which can be properly recycled, if we chose to.

JennyMemberAnd this in from Michigan…
Bad voter applications found
Clerks see fraudulent, duplicate forms from group
Several municipal clerks across the state are reporting fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications, most of them from a nationwide community activist group working to help low- and moderate-income families.
The majority of the problem applications are coming from the group ACORN, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has a large voter registration program among its many social service programs. ACORN’s Michigan branch, based in Detroit, has enrolled 200,000 voters statewide in recent months, mostly with the use of paid, part-time employees.
“There appears to be a sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent applications,” said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office. “And it appears to be widespread.”

CMPParticipantLOL…I’m going to pick up my new car tomorrow and hopefully I’ll remember to ask Chaplin’s to take off their license plate frame now! I bought my old car in Kansas and the Honda dealer put a decal on the back that never budged after twelve years, but it never bothered me, like it does some people.

SueParticipantThanks, FullTilt – I agree with you on this one. I’ve been keeping track of my own bag consumption. I haven’t taken a bag of any kind from any store for at least 3 months now, and even before that for the past year I’ve probably taken less than a dozen bags from a store. It’s really not that hard. I was out at the North Bend outlets this weekend and people were surprised that we had our own bags and kept remarking on it as we pulled them out. They’re not just for groceries.

if there is anyone who is willing to talk with the media about how they personally feel about the event.. i would appreciate it if you contact me at joanne@brayden.org.
since i seem to be organizing the West Seattle effort at protest, i have been the local contact, but as engaging as i am to talk with, i am sure they would appreciate more voices… both pro and con. whether you feel strongly or not.
You do not have to be the victim of abuse to have an opinion on spanking enforced submission as the primary tool for child discipline. In fact, i am not entirely sure being a victim adds weight to your opinion.

JennyMemberJust for fun, check out this RCP page that lists all the presidential polls that have reported the totals for Ralph Nader & Bob Barr:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/obama_vs_mccain_with_barr_nader-957.html
These polls show McCain up by +2.0 over Obama, which is close to what the horse race polls say. They show Nader at 2.0% & Barr at 1.4%.
RCP doesn’t show the running graph of historical RCP averages for these polls like they do in the horse race pages, but it does show Nader got 6% in three CNN polls in June/July, with an average of maybe 4%. Barr got one 6% from Rasmussen in May, mostly getting 2/3/4’s in June/July. Both of them started fading in August, and then dropped to where they are now at the beginning of September.

JennyMemberRealClearPolitics Average for the last few days:
POPULAR VOTE:
09/08 - McP +2.9
09/10 - McP +2.2
09/11 - McP +2.5
09/13 - McP +2.4
09/15 - McP +1.6
09/16 - McP +1.3In the Electoral College, McP is still up by +20. (No change since 9/14.)
Below are the toss-ups, plus the leaners, in order of the latest state polls according to RCP. The ones whose polls are most out of date should be the most due for a new poll to come out.
LEANING McCAIN. If one of these states becomes a toss-up, McCain loses their EVs; Obama has stopped the bleeding:
IN 8/30 11
MT 9/08 3
ND 9/08 3
MO 9/11 11
FL 9/14 27TOSS-UPS. Either campaign could change their EVs by moving a state from this category into Leading XXX:
NM 9/08 5
NH 9/09 4
MI 9/10 17
NV 9/11 5
MN 9/12 10
PA 9/14 21
OH 9/14 20
VA 9/14 13
CO 9/14 9LEANING OBAMA. If one of these states becomes a toss-up, Obama loses their EVs; the bleeding continues:
WI 9/07 10
OR 8/09 7
WA 9/10 11
IA 9/10 7
NJ 9/14 15There have been several polls from the battleground states since my last listing, but it didn’t look like there was much movement in any of them. As you can see, 4 out of the 9 tossup states had polls reported on 9/14 (Sunday) – and some of these had more than one.
So it still looks like any movement on the EV front should come from those states that are due for new polls to get reported: Indiana, Montana, N. Dakota, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, & Oregon. Since these older polls are from before Palin-o-mania caught hold, I’d expect McP to gain another 10-20 EVs in the next week. But since the daily popular vote polls are drifting back down, it’s possible that could represent McP’s high-water mark at least until the debates start happening.
miwsParticipantJo, one of the PT’s was just here, saying she was working on her report to the Dr, and asking what, if anything I might have trouble doing at home. Essentially, what is keeping me here. Since I’m doing so well, maybe soon?? *wishful thinking smilie*

RSMemberThank you, FullTilt!! My sentiments exactly. As a recent transplant, I find the “we have to vote on everything” mentality a little bizarre. That’s WHY I pay attention and vote in the elections- so that good people get into office and make good choices. If they do something really asinine, we recall them or vote them out of office in the next election. The bag tax whining doesn’t make sense to me, even the argument that there are other things the city could spend their money on trying to fix. That’s true on first glance, but the city’s resources are always going to be fungible and there’s always going to be something better they *could* be doing. Seems like a path to complete inaction and paralyzed government to me!
September 16, 2008 at 5:52 pm #639215In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
WSMomParticipantThank you Jan, Ms. Ensler’s words resonate the indignation I feel when pondering Palin as McCain’s choice for running mate. I’m ashamed and saddened for our country.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/15/business/marketwatch/main4448337.shtml
“The Sarah Palin Phenomenon Is Doomed
But it’s not because of her lack of foreign policy experience or her deer-in-the-headlights look during part of her interview last week with ABC’s Charles Gibson.
The primary reason why the Palin bubble will burst is that the media will decide that they are bored with her. They’ll need to move to shine a light on a fresh issue or individual.”
One good thing that may come from yesterdays financial meltdown is the hope that the presidential campaign will get back to the business of talking about VITAL ISSUES, instead of the vapid Ms. Palin.

charlabobParticipantOne of the most powerful writers of a new generation called it quits Friday. David Foster Wallace is a powerful force in literature and nonfiction.
In 2000 he spent a week on the bus and wrote this about McCain, for Rolling Stone. Among other things, it tells us something about how different McCain is now, and how much he stays the same. NB, the article is long and self-indulgent and riveting; I’m posting for the politics junkies and for the fans of literature, who are still in mourning.
September 16, 2008 at 5:43 pm #639136In reply to: Who really believes drilling is the answer.
WSMomParticipantI have great hope that within the next eight years we’ll be seeing electric cars as the “norm”. I drove an all electric Zenn Car around Arbor Heights and am sold on this new technology. The car is very roomy and comfortably seats four, easy to drive in the city, great acceleration on hills. The Zenn car I drove only goes up to 40mph, but the next generation will go up to 60mph and can be driven on the freeway.
I believe if we put some serious effort into R&D of solar & wind energy we will have some amazing technologies available to us which will cut our dependency on foreign oil and improve emission standards. America needs to meet this challenge with fresh ideas and bold initiatives. Drill baby Drill is absurd. Holding on to the past will only get us further in debt and lower our standard to living.

charlabobParticipantFT, thank you for explaining representative democracy. I have never lived in a place where people could be so easily stirred up by being told, “YOU didn’t get to VOTE on it.” Face it people, once again, you’ve been conned by an industry into a position that will only help them. When will we learn?
September 16, 2008 at 5:16 pm #639159In reply to: 20-cent bag fee will not take effect Jan 1
FullTiltParticipantWe don’t need to vote on everything. That is why we elect people, to make policies and decisions. This was not going to be a life altering ruling. The big waste of tax dollars is going to be putting this on a ballot.
September 16, 2008 at 5:09 pm #639214In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
JanSParticipantsent to me by a friend….it’s long, but apropos to topic at hand..
“Eve Ensler, the American playwright, performer, feminist and activist
best known for “The Vagina Monologues”, wrote the following about
Sarah Palin:
Drill, Drill, Drill
I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a
member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of
drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a
particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it’s their snowy whiteness or
their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have
never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that
they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar
bears.
I don’t like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life
trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence
against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the
Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people
who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of
Feminists.
But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical
to Feminism which for me is part of one story — connected to saving
the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls
options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence
and war.
I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous
choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates
the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas
that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the
impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately,
this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the
inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.
Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor.
In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets
better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting
of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the
pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God’s plan. She is
fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The
earth, in Palin’s view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves
and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be
taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she
said herself of the Iraqi war, “It was a task from God.”
Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does not believe women
who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should
have a right to determine whether they have their rapist’s baby or
not.
She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I
imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many
babies that makes.
Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she
has tried to ban books from the li brary, has a tendency to dispense
with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an
environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and
might very well be the next president of the United States. She would
govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.
Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle.
She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds
of wolves from the air.
Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right.
But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is
declared in God’s name, when the rights of women are denied in his
name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the
undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.
I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election
in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not
just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we
create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for
humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and
diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through
invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for
oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in alternatives
that will free us from dependency and destruction. It will determine
if money gets spent on education and healt hcare or whether we build
more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America is
a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism
and aggression.
If the Polar Bears don’t move you to go and do everything in your
power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the
hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, “Drill Drill Drill.” I think of
teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction.
I think of domination. I think of military exercises that force
mindless repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity
or dissent. I think of pain.
Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor
of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations
and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call
life?

September 16, 2008 at 4:43 pm #639213In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
flowerpetalMemberHere’s what makes Sarah Palin relevant for me:
According to U.S. Government actuarial tables, there is a 38% chance John McCain (born 8/29/36, currently 72 years old) would die of natural causes during his first term as President:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/STATS/table4c6.html
These actuarial statistics do not factor in John McCain’s skin cancer, which pushes his individual likelihood of death even higher than the 38 percent average for any adult American male of his age.
Roll a dice cube four times. If you get a 1 or 2 on any roll, you’ve experienced the likelihood – very conservatively estimated – that Sarah Palin will hold America’s nuclear missile codes, and face down Vladimir Putin, the nuclear-armed and Taliban-supporting Pakistani military, and the rest of the mess out there.
Are you prepared to give this person the power to launch a nuclear war, and potentially end all human life on this planet, under nobody’s authority but her own?

beachdrivegirlParticipantThe principal of the matter for me is that I did not get to vote on this. And it is not solving any issue at all. Why are they taxing paper bags? why are they not taxing bags used at a department store? And what about the plastic produce bag that i pick up??? This is not a real solution.

JoBParticipantFlipjack…
thanks.. that was a very useful video clip…
for those who might be put off by the syle of the first part of the video.. hang in there.. there is useful info for all voters.
or just go to stealbackyourvote.org for info on the 7 ways your vote could be stolen and what you can do about it.
voter suppression is illegal… but it’s a lot easier to get away with if it’s republicans perpetrating the fraud and the state attorney general is a handpicked republican appointee…
there is a method in madness. Although illegal practice was investigated, the appointees remain in place.
Maybe it would be a good thing to make sure you are still legally registered before it’s too late.
it could happen here too.
