barmargiaMemberWSB, I’ve said this before and I can’t say it enough times, Dr. Naden’s office up on Admiral is the best dentist I have been to, and I’ve been to quite a few over the years. the staff is always great. if there is an insurance problem they always double check before going to me about it. And Dr. Naden is great, I had a tooth situation which had never been explained to me, my first appointment he told me what could have caused it (something from when my teeth came in), I asked my mom if this thing had happened, she said, you know as a matter of fact…

JeraldParticipantA month or so ago I overheard a similar exchange at the Target return desk, They finally allowed the customer to return the item without a receipt, but said their rules allowed this only once a year per person. I hadn’t heard that version before.

LisaParticipantWe had a similiar experience at Westwood Target: My 15yo daughter bought a hair straightening iron, less than $25.00. Came home, plugged it in, defective. It displayed a defective error code in the LED console on the handle. We drive back to Target looking for a replacement, not a refund, but since my 15yo lost the receipt, No Way. No refund, no exchange, no if, ands, or buts. We had all the packaging, instructions, etc. But no flexibility from Target. They sold us a defective product and they were doing nothing. $25 down the drain, which is a lot of money, especially for a teenager. Really nasty rules on exchanges/refunds. Tough lesson for my daughter. We’ll think twice before we spend our money at Target in the future.
PS – We called the Mfg and explained our story. They sent us a new straightening iron…no return of the defective iron, no questions asked! That renewed my faith in big business!

in forum West Seattle Rants & RavesewestermanParticipantOkay, so I am a couple of weeks out of surgery and a friend buys me two pairs of pj’s at Target– 25 bucks each. They are the same pj’s but two different sizes since I am stuck in bed and can’t go in to try them on. She buys other stuff and I pay her for the two pairs. We decide she can keep the receipt as she paid with her credit card and we figure they will give me a gift card for the exchange. The pj’s are untouched. They are in their same pristine condition and it is obvious they were purchased at the Westwood Target. Do I have a receipt, they ask. Nope. I explain the situation. Just got through surgery … friend purchased…she kept receipt. I gave her money, blah, blah, blah, may I just exchange? Nope. I am a regular customer. I ask for the next level up. May I exchange? Nope. Do I need to drive to Mercer Island to get the receipt? Yes.
Do you get it that I will never do this again? Do you get it that I am a regular customer? Do you get it that all I want is to make an exchange? Nope. Sorry. Can’t do anything about it. The manager is Brian, but he can’t give me his last name. Anyway, I left the $25 pj’s with them and told them they just lost a customer.

JulieMemberWSB, our solution to the blinds problem is to order a repair kit from fixmyblinds.com. They’re in Colorado Springs, but give very good and prompt service. The instructions come with the kit and are easy to follow. It does take longer than having someone else do it, but it saves a ton of money! I found fixmyblinds.com after finding out what it would cost to have ours restrung.
For dentists, you might consider Dr. Colin Craig, although he’s in Burien. I appreciate the gentle and explanatory–albeit firm–reminders from him and his assistants, rather than lectures.

KayleighMemberGlad you think being homeless is funny, House. Somebody’s got to think so, ’cause people who’ve experienced it firsthand don’t find much humor in it. What with trying stay warm, finding ways to not be harmed or killed, staying hydrated, trying to forget how desperately hungry you are, looking for a job or even working (many of the homeless do work, contrary to myth), protecting your children from god-knows-what kind of harm (many of the homeless are children), convincing the cops that you’re not a criminal, being put on endless waiting lists for supportive housing, dealing with people (YOU) who treat you like dirt….
Whoo-hoo.

JanSParticipantyes, meanspirited at best. You say you have a sense of humor, but post after post are full of zings. I try to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I think down underneath you really believe the crap you spew about the people on here…and that’s sad. Once more, this is how “I” see it, and I may be totally wrong. But…try this for a week…no name calling, no “libs”, no “dementia” slurs, no”senility” slurs,no “holier than thou” attitude, no condescending attitude (Charla, take a shot of whiskey). For one week just involve yourself in on-topic conversation with an open mind…see if it’s difficult for you…which I just bet it will be. Maybe your friends find you amusing, but the whole world doesn’t.

charlabobParticipantGuilt-Free Dentist: Dr. Brent Shupack, Alki Dental Clinic — I have no idea how he compares in other areas (cost, pain, etc.) (I don’t have cavities or root canals or the usual) — but the first time I saw him it had literally been years since I’d been to a dentist–he smiled, said, “It’s not that unusual.”
They also schedule appointments online and send email reminders — again, don’t know how unusual that is, but I found it refreshing.
If you go, tell him I sent you, I still love him, and in a few years when I go to the dentist again, he’ll be at the top of my list :-)
May 3, 2008 at 9:04 pm #586888WSBKeymaster1. Anyone within a 20-mile radius who will re-string blinds. Our front window blinds are 15 years old and still in great shape except the strings break on occasion. We used to take them back to the Southcenter chain where we bought them but they started growling at us. So we need to find somewhere new to get them fixed.
2. We’ve had a couple dentist threads before, on the home page pre-forums, and here. This request is very specific and will probably make you laugh evilly. Looking for a dentist who will be not only gentle and talented but also will not be judgmental when you show up with a problem that finally happened even though you know you are to blame for letting your teeth go to semi-hell while dealing with other seemingly more urgent (yet ultimately less painful) matters. Can’t go back to the last dentist because we got lectured. Yeah, we know we screwed up. Can you just kindly fix it? OK, stop laughing, someone give us a recommendation. Please. And thank you.

SueParticipantI just got back from there – great burger and onion rings at a really reasonable price – bacon cheeseburger w/onion rings for $7! The place is clean and the owners and workers are so friendly and nice. I heard them talking about how they ground 50 pounds of beef the first day and ran out, then they did 75 yesterday and ran out by 7pm, so today they decided to try 88 pounds of beef and see how it goes.
The only thing I would change about the burger is the lettuce – to either shred it more, or make it more “leafy” – it was a bit clumpy and then ended up making the bun tear, so it was messy. Didn’t stop me from eating it all though – LOL!

TheHouseMemberSo sad, Charla. I thought you’d have more respect for someone that didn’t hide behind the Internet/Screen Name.
It’s a shame that although some people have learned that I have a sense of humor, you haven’t. It’s also a shame that you call me call me a “punk a-hole” just b/c you disagree with me and I can refute just about anything you throw at me.
I know for a fact that their are plenty of people out there that side with me (and I can be reasonable) and there plenty of people that think I’m an ass. I enjoy the banter even though it isn’t always witty.
Take a shot of whisky, Charla. It will calm your nerves.
Oh, and Kayleigh…I have a new refrigerator box if you’d like to pass along to your friends that you’re hugging.

WSBKeymasterAlso e-mail us directly, as many people do. I don’t have a mechanism to continuously monitor the forums (though I check in often) but I do continuously monitor the mailbox. We listen to scanners often (the basic info you see on the 911 site is usually followed up on the radio by an explanation for the responding crews) and watch 911; if we don’t know what’s happening exactly when it’s happening, we do follow up.

charlabobParticipantSorry, Jan — I love ya, but in this case you’re wrong. There’s no place house’s face or tongue can be that make him other than a punk a-hole.
I’m just happy to see people seem to finally be noticing and the smiley faces are disappearing.
This crap is just unacceptable; usually it’s limited to interaction with people who are just bits on the internet. I’m amazed that anyone behaves in this manner toward people he knows in real life and who, inmnho, have gone far beyond anything reasonable in accommodating him.
There are reasonable, intelligent people on the right, with whom it’s possible to have dialog. New Res is one — House is not.

beachdrivegirlParticipantClinton’s position is a fairy tale. You can’t have a windfall profits tax this summer with out GW’s signature. And if you could, Clinton has already promised this money to alternative energy research, and now also infrastructure.
It is not a plan. It is pandering, plain and simple. If McCain gives you $5, I will too… It’s the political thinking that leads to someone like her supporting the war in Iraq for over 4 years, and supporting NAFTA for almost 10- and then being against it magically when the election season starts. It’s called pandering.
May 3, 2008 at 4:27 pm #623382In reply to: Anybody but McDermott
BarkdustParticipantDon’t give up so easily, JohnM. You have some company in West Seattle. It’s true that just calling him “Baghdad Jim†doesn’t add much to the conversation. However, that’s how much of the rest of the country thinks of him. He took money that had been diverted from the UN’s Oil for Graft program to pay for a propaganda photo-op for Saddam at a time Saddam was firing missiles trying to kill American pilots enforcing a United Nations resolution. He diverted over $600,000 that had been contributed for his re-election to pay a court judgment against him for violation of privacy and wiretap laws.
Meanwhile, have a close look at what he’s been doing in Congress. I went to his website and looked at his list of bills he has sponsored in the 109th Congress. (That’s a two year period.) http://www.house.gov/mcdermott/legislative.shtml
There are 25 pieces of legislation on the list. Six of those are resolutions congratulating Anton Ono, the Seattle Storm etc. I was puzzled to see that he sponsored a resolution to congratulate a high school in Illinois for winning their state football championship. I suppose there’s a story there. Anyway, that leaves 16 bills and 3 amendments. None of his bills got more than 93 co-sponsors and all 16 bills apparently died in committee. Only five of his bills got more than 40 co-sponsors. His amendments weren’t much more effective. One of his amendments that would have prohibited prosecution of people violating the Cuban travel ban was withdrawn by unanimous consent. Another amendment concerned Katrina relief and was defeated on a point of order. The only piece of legislation sponsored by Rep. McDermott to pass in the 109th Congress was an amendment that requires a study of the effects of depleted uranium munitions. Frankly, that sounds like a good idea to me. However, that seems to be the only result to show for 2 years of work.
He also co-sponsored 848 pieces of legislation including some important legislation that did get passed. However, it’s not clear that he added much as one of over 200 co-sponsors on such a bill. He also has a fondness for projects like HR 40 which would have established a commission to examine the institution of slavery in the American Colonies and the United States from 1615 to 1865 and its continuing effect on living Americans and to make recommendations to Congress for remedies. We all recognize this as an attempt to create a Federally-funded platform to promote a reparations agenda. The bill gathered 35 other co-sponsors and, thankfully, was sent to committee to die.
It seems to me that he is ineffective at best. Is he viewed as an influential member of Congress or a buffoon? Is he viewed as able to gather the support of his own party and across the aisle to advance issues that are important to his constituents? I don’t think so. He has become too comfortable with his 80% vote margins, too distracted with his pet political projects and he needs to go.
beachdrivegirlParticipantAnd if CLinton walks this walk to well why are those that know her and Obama best supporting Obama. (Yes those supers from the Senate…Obama (last time I checked) had more support by about 18 to 13..) hmmm sounds like she is the one talking the talk… becuase if she really had the walk down Clinton would be the nominee by now and her peers would be supporting her.
I cant wait for the primaries end on Tuesday. It will be a great day.
beachdrivegirlParticipantJoB
Do not put words in my mouth. I have never called Clinton supporters stupid or uneducated.Have you not read what I have posted and what I have put links to obviously not because if did you would realize the reasons why I do not support your canidate and quite frankly will adivate for Bloomberg to run if she manages to STEAL the election.
Secondly lets really take a look @ who is being elite and I don’t think its me and I don’t think its The House i hate to break it you but it is YOU. You do not read what we post and you only consider your view the right view and your canidate the right canidate.
And FYI in case you missed it the Gas tax Holiday is the repug way of thinking not the Dems so if anything when it comes to positions and being elite you and Clinton are more there then Obama and his supporters.

JeffroMemberWhy have a gas tax at all if it’s such a burden on the poor? Does the gas tax even cover the amount we spend every year on roads?
I’m sorry but I think that people who drive our roads more should pay more. Our freeways aren’t actually free and that money has to come from somewhere. Apparently the McCains and Clintons of the world want to spread this burden onto people who are way worse off than someone spending 30 bucks in taxes over 4 months.
And I’ll point out that this hypothetical minimum wage earner saving $30 is already spending $500 in gasoline without the tax, and they’ll need more assistance than any gas tax holiday can account for.
Why stop at eliminating the gas tax? Let’s carry it one further and start paying people to buy gas! Now we’re getting compassionate!
I also want to call shenanigans on the two-hour bus ride from West Seattle to Ballard. There is no spot in West Seattle that is an hour by bus to downtown, and likewise for Ballard. If it takes you two hours, you’re doing it wrong.

charlabobParticipantDo you really think the poor, the under educated, the working class — whatever euphemism you choose for people you look down on — are too stupid to realize they’re being scammed by the Gas Tax “Holiday”?
Tonight I heard Clinton actually say that she wanted the Democrats in congress to stand up and say whether they supporterd the Gas Tax Holiday or the Big Oil Companies. I was waiting for the phrase, “Up or Down Vote.”
Fortunately, the Democratic leadership isn’t as crass and venal as the Clintons — they have uniformly said, NOPE! Looks like Clinton and the Repugs are on alone on that particular limb.
Do you think the working class is too stupid to understand economics? Hell, they’re the prime victims of economics. And they’re quite capable absorbing concepts such as decaying infrastructure, pandering, etc.
I’m getting very tired of hearing the word “elitist” bandied about by describe who condescend to the working class. There are two elitists in this race: McCain and Clinton. If we’re lucky, the rest of us will figure it out before November and give them both a DOWN vote.

WSBKeymasterThe Zippy’s saga is my favorite story from among the dozens we covered this week.
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=7227
Especially what emerged in comments and in an e-mail we received after the “opening day” post – the fact that the owner was a well-known punk rocker back in the day.
(Not to mention the fact that WSB readers apparently swarmed the store!)
We usually google people involved in stories as we’re writing them, to be sure we don’t miss interesting factoids like that, but I guess the missing link here was that we didn’t know previously that “Zippy” was his rocker nickname! — TR
