Because of the deregulation that started with Reagan, we’ve had no regulatory control, especially over the “new financial institutions”, such as hedge funds.
That all depends on what you call a hedge fund. I work for a “hedge fund” that trades in futures…as a futures fund, we are HIGHLY regulated, more so then mutual funds or other stock funds.
The problem with bear sterns and the other collapsing mort companies isnt because of regulations, its because they decided to over leverage themselves. Some mort companies trade at a leverage of 30-50 to 1…meaning they can reap in huge profits or take massive losses if the market moves against them. (ie trading 100 dollars like 3k-5k). They had it good when the markets were easy to predict, but now that things turn south, they get hammered.
The Wall street journal and other newspapers paint hedge funds as the worst thing out there, when in reality they are a necessary part of the market, they actually REDUCE volatility, and greatly help in the liquidation side of assets.
As always when people invest they need to not just look at the pretty charts, but they have to study the statistics of the fund, if something doesnt look right, there is a reason for it. If people see 50-60% returns in a year thats great…but they also need to realize that that can also generate 50-60% losses in a year as well.
if you need/want any more information I’d be more then willing to try my best to answer questions. I’m by no means an “expert” on trading, I’m a software guy who just happens to have passed the Series 3 Futures examination recently, so I have a whole mess of information I’d rather dump out of my head right now.

I found the reference to the use of psychedelics, and a correlation to an inability to understand certain fiscal policies based on that usage- and the glowing pink trees you’d see, fascinating commentary.
Many people have explained away my behavior over the years to the many head injuries suffered as a child, and then the liberal drug use in my twenties. I happen to agree…

tho i can’t attribute anything to the liberal drug use in my twenties…hippy or not, i was far too responsible for that.
I would say that is something i have always regretted.. but those kids have given me far more joy than a few drug filled days.
besides.. i turned out to be deathly (as in a sudden emergency trip to the hospital) allergic to marijuana smoke… couldn’t even let anyone smoke around me.
It sure was fun to mess with the minds of those who had been inbibing tho ;->
i still enjoy that.

I wouldn’t say that we completely align politically, but that’s OK. I got mad love for all my West Seattle Homies….even the ones that are going through early stages of dementia.

I’m just happy to see people seem to finally be noticing and the smiley faces are disappearing.
This crap is just unacceptable; usually it’s limited to interaction with people who are just bits on the internet. I’m amazed that anyone behaves in this manner toward people he knows in real life and who, inmnho, have gone far beyond anything reasonable in accommodating him.
There are reasonable, intelligent people on the right, with whom it’s possible to have dialog. New Res is one — House is not.

It’s a shame that although some people have learned that I have a sense of humor, you haven’t. It’s also a shame that you call me call me a “punk a-hole” just b/c you disagree with me and I can refute just about anything you throw at me.
I know for a fact that their are plenty of people out there that side with me (and I can be reasonable) and there plenty of people that think I’m an ass. I enjoy the banter even though it isn’t always witty.
Take a shot of whisky, Charla. It will calm your nerves.

JanSParticipantyes, meanspirited at best. You say you have a sense of humor, but post after post are full of zings. I try to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I think down underneath you really believe the crap you spew about the people on here…and that’s sad. Once more, this is how “I” see it, and I may be totally wrong. But…try this for a week…no name calling, no “libs”, no “dementia” slurs, no”senility” slurs,no “holier than thou” attitude, no condescending attitude (Charla, take a shot of whiskey). For one week just involve yourself in on-topic conversation with an open mind…see if it’s difficult for you…which I just bet it will be. Maybe your friends find you amusing, but the whole world doesn’t.

KayleighMemberGlad you think being homeless is funny, House. Somebody’s got to think so, ’cause people who’ve experienced it firsthand don’t find much humor in it. What with trying stay warm, finding ways to not be harmed or killed, staying hydrated, trying to forget how desperately hungry you are, looking for a job or even working (many of the homeless do work, contrary to myth), protecting your children from god-knows-what kind of harm (many of the homeless are children), convincing the cops that you’re not a criminal, being put on endless waiting lists for supportive housing, dealing with people (YOU) who treat you like dirt….

Yes.. there is a fine line between saying that our words and phrases sound negative …. mirroring them back in ways we didn’t intend them … and attacking the person instead of the ideas…
but that fine line is what allows all of us to have conversation… and when you cross it.. it isn’t about ideas any more… it’s about animosity.
animosity isn’t even entertaining…
