Local tie in for an area that needs more research dollars asap.

We currently pay millions of dollars annually to treat sewage to prevent algae blooms. What if we were to pipe that sewage to offshore algae farms and harvest the alge for conversion to biofuels?

Is it cost effective? Who knows? Lab tests seem to indicate it is but only large scale test will tell for sure.

Not gonna happen this summer, but it will never happen under a republican administration.

Just a little information on corn being used for ethanol/biodiesel

    MYTH:

Ethanol production wastes corn that could be used to feed a hungry world.

FACT: Wet mill ethanol production facilities are also know as corn refineries—and they also producer starch, corn sweeteners, and corn oil—all products that are used as food ingredients for human consumption.

The corn used for ethanol production is field corn typically used to feed to livestock. Ethanol production also results in the production of distillers grains and gluten feed—both of which are fed to livestock as well, helping produce high quality meat products for distribution domestically and abroad.

There is no shortage of corn. In 2004, U.S. farmers produced a record 11.8 billion bushel corn harvest—and some 1.4 billion bushels (about 13 percent) were used in ethanol production. In other words, there is still room to significantly grow the ethanol market without limiting the availability of corn. Steadily increasing average corn yields and the improved ability of other nations to grow corn also make it clear that ethanol production can continue to grow without affecting the food supply.

The tremendous expansion of the ethanol sector raises a key question: Where will ethanol producers get the corn needed to increase their output? With a corn-to-ethanol conversion rate of 2.7 gallons per bushel (a rate that many state-of-the-art facilities are already surpassing), the U.S. ethanol sector will need 2.6 billion bushels per year by 2010—1.2 billion bushels more than it consumed in 2005.

As far as biodiesel is concerned its still a small part of total fuel consumption, with some very cheap biodiesel being made for about 40-80 cents a gallon, from used vegetable oil.

Most of the runup in prices of food is from (in my opinion) global inflation/falling dollar/people refusing to export goods. (Such as rice, which Thailand flirted with closing exports of, and several countries did suspend exports of.)

I know I’m “picking on” one part of the whole discussion, but I just like to make sure people have facts.

As far as the discussion goes, suspending the FEDERAL gas tax is silly, 18.4 cents per gallon will save even the biggest drivers pretty much nothing. The 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel I’m all for suspending, just not the “unleaded” tax. (a boon for the polluting diesel engines I know…but hey, I’m nice sometimes)

I just spent a good hour looking for reactions in the black press to the Senator Obama/Wright controversy… and as far as I can tell.. the black press itself is silent.

I did find a few articles in the mainstream press…

    http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/bal-md.churches01may01,0,591077.story?page=1

    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g1Qr-L0EeMgyfelWgKLbSVBZlZdwD90D8O4OA

    I found articles on racism…

    http://www.suntimes.com/news/brown/922710,CST-NWS-brown30.article

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004326428_raceyoung04m.html

I found political analysis by both a Canadian pundit and USNews and World Report

    http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/opinion/story.html?id=807fbcb0-409b-4bbb-8f91-2ed9d998c5e6

    http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/mzuckerman/2008/05/02/reverend-wrights-wrongs.html

I found an article calling this the greatest ever political coup… for Obama

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/blake-fleetwood/rev-wright-falls-on-his-s_b_99362.html

and lastly.. this article about the 10 ten political gaffes in the primaries…

    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/05/friday_line_the_controgaffes_o.html

What I didn’t find is interesting to me … political spin from the campaigns aside.. I didn’t find anything current from the black press.. even in sources that had previously condemned Senator Obama…

And I didn’t find consensus… on what kind of issue this is for Senator Obama.. race or ethics.. though the Republican press is coming down heavily on ethics… they haven’t yet called him a liar.. but are getting close.

Strangely, O’Rielly has come down on Reverend Wright for sabotaging Senator Obama’s political career… and applauded Obama’s reaction … or perhaps not so strangely given the republican choice to focus publicly on hypocrisy.

One thing is clear from my morning’s probe.. America really doesn’t know what to make of this…

It took us months before we went into CTATWS. First of all, they have a terrible name. Secondly, they all but hide their amazing cupcakes from public view. Their cupcakes and coffee are SOO much better than Cupcake Royale across the street. If they had a zippier name and turned the cupcake display towards the sidewalk they’d be franchising in a matter of months. Perhaps they like being a WS secret?

May 2: Zogby’s daily tracking poll shows Obama with a double-digit lead in the North Carolina primary:

    Barack Obama: 50%

    Hillary Clinton: 34%

Look, for every poll that shows one thing, there is another that shows the opposite. Polls aren’t great, they are often innaccurate.

With that said, Mr. Zogby tends to do better then most (was within 2 points in Texas, Ohio, Missippi, and Pennsylvania), and the “lost ground” the media keeps reporting on, and “erosion of support” certainly is not showing up in his polling. He shows Indiana tied, and Obama up 16 in NC.

And as Clinton supporters know very well, the good cards to have are the demographic advantages, not the late polling surges. I don’t expect North Carolina to be close, even with how badly the mainstream media would like it to be.

This, along with more superdelegate support this week, is really pointing to an endgame of next Tuesday night, or Wednesday morning.

OK, kids, Exxon-Mobil is in trouble. Their income, last quarter, only “a disappointing” 17 percent. Perhaps we could put together a bowling tournament and raise a few hundred dollars to cheer ’em up.

This article in the NYT, is short, ugly, and pathetic — it sounds like an unedited version of the cover letter for their quarterly report to investors.

You’ll particularly enjoy the fact that they haven’t been able to pass all the cost of oil and its production on to the consumer.

If you wonder why we’re so ignorant of economics, this will help you understand.

WOW!! I haven’t had a therapeutic/injury massage in close to a year because my trusted person moved out of town and I just haven’t been able to find a replacement that I was happy with.

Monday while checking in on the WSB, I saw an ad for M3 Bodyworks. I had just been saying I really needed worked on and there was the ad! So, made an appointment and went today.

Damon was my therapist and I can’t say enough good things about my experience. He listened to my particular issues and treated me for those as well as made me feel like I could really trust his work. I made another appointment immediately for next week.

As far as booking an appointment, I was able to go online and look at the schedule and book an appointment right there. I had some questions so I called the office directly and they accommodated my weird schedule and my need for immediate work. I work an odd schedule so they even have appointments late at night with some starting at 11pm!

Easy booking, great therapist… did I mention the very reasonable prices?? Check ’em out. They are a WS company, they advertise on the WSB, great service, great prices, great therapist. What more could you ask for??

Deleting original post contents as our request was not honored. Not deleting thread as others participated. I would really LIKE to offer the “jobs wanted” section again but not if people don’t want to identify themselves. Too much liability there among other things. Craigslist may have an ace team of lawyers to handle sticky situations but we’re a little smaller-staffed.

You should be able to delete your own posts. I understand from some folks that the option doesn’t always show up, not sure why. I am not going to delete the others’ responses without their authorization but will clear your posts. Also I need to reiterate the site policy that as site owners we have the right to delete or not approve any comment by anyone at any time for any reason. Some comments held for moderation do not show up because the spam filter eats them (one particular user recently for some reason went to the spam filter every time and we’re not sure if we lost some of them; we have to clear 5,000-plus spam comments out of the queue every day) but some, probably about two a week, do not show up because we do not approve them, and that is what was done with your original comment, it was not deleted, but rather not approved. — TR

i suspect the management have given you a break because you did put your contact info in the post … email.. and because they have a soft spot for anyone who chooses to educate themselves…

but there are a fair number of us who have put our own real names out on this blog.. and more contact info than you are willing to divulge… you don’t even provide your first name…and we don’t want jobs.

You can post that kind of adv on craig’s list without divulging personal info…

if you want to post here. you should be working within their rules.

    Ken,

i get the perspective.. and yes.. one way of looking at it is pandering…

but.. some people are really hurting right now and any relief .. even short term.. helps… even if it is pandering.

I was going to say real relief would be a huge tax on profiteering… but it wouldn’t really, would it?

We needed to invest in alternative fuels and public transportation a long time ago.. and we haven’t.

We need to stop using food for fuel.

We are stuck between a rock and a hard place…

I know all of that. I don’t like it.. but i know it.

But i also know that we aren’t that far from food riots here.. and that the rising cost of fuel isn’t going to make any of this any easier.

At some point… someone has to do something.. anything.. that helps these people… even if all it does is offer token recognition that things aren’t going so well for them. And if it isn’t going to happen in an election year.. when will it happen?

for some families.. the amount they could save this summer will have a direct bearing on what they are able to feed their children.

We are lucky not to have to think about that.

Hello, Currently we on the waitlist for Gatewood. Our second choice was Lafayette. I wish there was a way to trade. Because I know there are families who would rather their children go to Lafayette. I was so surprised that we were waitlisted and yet happy for Gatewoods success. I went around during open registration and kept telling families why we were so passionate about Gatewood. As a result some of those families got in and we did not. I realize it’s a gamble if it’s not your cluster. Again Can’t we trade. I have been reading their newsletter monthly I feel like we are “gators”. Any one have any advice on how to move up or encourage others to be removed if they are content with their second choice?

No one is saying it is not *effective* pandering, just that it is stupid.

They don’t call it populism for nothing. The Athenians found that out pretty much the same way we have.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080420213333AAsADzu

By ceding power to the most belligerent “tyrant” who promises safety and tax relief in a time of war.

I calculated the saving on what I drove in NC in the 80’s, 40 miles one way to work.

    I saved 55.00. in 90 days.

Sure it sells with those who cannot do the math or don’t understand the realities of the manufactured shortage (no refineries built, middle east war, dollar dropping vs world currencies, shift to euro from dollar on oil futures market) You know, all the things forecast by non DLC democrats from Wes Clark to Jim McDermott and Russ Feingold.

Also note the important part. The tax revenue from gasoline sales stays steady regardless of the price since it is collected per gallon. The more you pay for gasoline, the lower the percentage of the price you pay that goes into the highway fund for the required maintenance and infrastructure replacement. And the higher the profit per gallon for the oil companies.

Only reduced consumption or a pie in the sky full scale pander fest can effect the tax revenue stream required for upkeep on the nations roads and bridges.

Diesel fuel in WA is taxed at the same rate and the same way as gasoline, but other states vary wildly in the differences in gas and diesel tax rates per gallon. The federal tax on diesel is about 6 cents more than for gasoline.

Propose a diesel tax roll back if you like and the price will (in a perfect world) go back to where it was march 10th of this year.

This article does a pretty god job of putting it in perspective.

    Beachdrivegirl..

i know the race isn’t about the popular vote count… i know it isn’t about the polls.. or about the predictions of political pundits…

i know the race isn’t about political propaganda either.

i don’t bother reading either Hillary’s or Senator Obama’s web sites. i figure if they wanted me to know something.. they have already emailed me…

and i don’t read the political blogs much either except in when i follow the links you all post.

I just read the questions that you all pose, ask some of my own.. and go looking for the answers…

my regular contacts with the news are NPR … Amy Goodman.. the daily show…and i read a lot.. on the internet.. books and magazines… both at the library and at home. (I won’t pay for the magazines i occassionally read at the library. i only read them to find out what less progressive people are thinking.)

One thing i know… that you seem to have yet to figure out… is that in a race this close we won’t know what the delegate count actually is for a while yet… and i am not talking about superdelegtes who can and will change their minds at will.

The discussion about whether to count Florida isn’t over and won’t be unless one of them withdraws from the race.

Both candidates received substantial votes there and had equal opportunity.

Regardless of their blustering, do you really believe that the democratic party will totally fail to seat the delegates of two states in a close primary?

This is what the party fears far more than the superdelegates. They are just a great smokescreen which keeps people from asking the really tough questions.

They made a really bad choice and are going to have to find some way to give those citizens a voice…

it would be so much easier for them to pressure one of the candidates to withdraw…

I could go back and look at what the delegate count would be if michigan was split down the middle and florida was added.. but i won’t…

it doesn’t matter at this point…

what matters is what will happen in the next month… and we need to let that play out.

If the party is lucky.. there will be a clear winner… and we can all breathe a sigh of relief and get on with things..

If not.. the real politicking begins…

and that has absolutely nothing to do with the will of the people.. because if it gets that far it will be because… there is no clear will of the people…

all the rest of this on the way to the endgame is just noise… political noise meant to intimidate the other side.. but just noise.

the article above got it right.. in the primary.. it is essential not to alienate the black vote.. they are a huge democratic voting block.

but in the general election.. they don’t matter so much…

so.. how does hillary get from here to there? Win the nomination without p..g off the black vote?

that analysis is pretty accurate as well.

This is now Senator Obama’s race to lose.. and we will only know if he has lost it by watching the primaries play out.

    Walfredo…

i didn’t make any of those arguments… so stop trying to plant words in my mouth.

i said that Mark Penn made a cogent case for his argument… i did not say Mark Penn was objective.

I did say that Real Politic is objective in the way they analyze what they will or will not post.

I didn’t say Obama is being divisive to the party by staying in the race. I said an equal case can be made for Obama being divisive to the party…

I didn’t make the case not did i state at any time that either candidate was divisive to the party.

i happen to think the republican noise machine is divisive to the democratic party…

and you can’t assume a lock on the nomination when it hasn’t been secured yet. if it was, we wouldn’t be having this conversation…

I don’t believe at any time i stated that any voter doesn’t count.

i just used logic to point out to you that it may be more difficult for Senator Obama to secure the Presidency if he does not appeal to large demographic blocks of voters.

One of two things i happening here..

you think someone is pretty stupid.. either me.. and i will let you get away with totally misstating my points… or the readers who you think will simply believe your version of things no matter what i say…

or you have a problem reading and comprehending the written word.

    Which is it?

    #623495

    Walfredo…

there is only one problem with the savings calculator…

it doesn’t bother to factor in the savings for transportation for everything you purchase…

oh.. i forgot.. you write that one off with… “the oil companies will just raise the prices to make more profits anyway… you won’t save anything” rationale… you just change the company category to grocery or furniture or clothing or….

You do realize that when shipping prices go up.. prices go up with them…

but even if we leave that aside… if i continue my current driving pattern.. since i do usually drive large distances in the summer by car.. i will save just under $100.

While that may only be the cost of a dinner for two at some of our local eateries..

i am betting that will make a substantial difference to those who live where public transportation isn’t a possibility and therefore drive similar miles just to work.

There goes that disconnect between the lives that young urban professionals with access to public transportation live… and those lived by the rest of the nation who probably live some distance from public transportation.. and are stuck between a rock and a hard place with gas prices climbing.

Or the disconnect between those who can walk and those who rely on their cars to allow them to get around…

    or…

I am sure you get my point…

The full names and bios of the blog owners are on the *about* page. TR is just a signature so you know who’s speaking. You can’t just borrow someone’s blog for your own business without getting their permission and following their rules. I used to belong to All Star. I can’t remember their prices, but remember them to be pretty reasonable considering it’s a very nice place. Comparably, the Y is ridiculously expensive. It’s dingy, small and because I’m married, they were going to make me pay for a family membership even though my spouse wasn’t going to use it.

We did quit going to all star though because it can be very busy with bad parking at popular hours, but I suppose they all are.

Tell us how much you will be saving with the McCain-Clinton plan.

Added bonus, with the McCain version you get to co-sign a loan from China for the billions already promised for this summers highway and bridge rebuilding nationwide.

The Clinton version imagines enough Senators not in the pocket of the oil companies to pass a windfall profits tax and over ride the veto of the oilman in chief. That and the rainbows and ponies that will surely accompany such a momentous occasion, will pay for the money missing from the highway fund.

I save $4.16 based on my current driving pattern.

Another dollar or two and I can get the whole meal deal at McDonald’s.

Is the Zippy burger any cheaper? I will be in for one by labor day.
