BonnieParticipantI wanted to post a huge rave for Coffee to a Tea. They accommodated a group of 14 of us today and we had a wonderful time. We were there for 2 hours had excellent service. I highly recommend Coffee to a Tea for large groups. We had their Afternoon Tea today. Great!

JanSParticipantThanks, Bonnie…memo to self…go to CTAT for carrot cake…it’s yummy…

shihtzuParticipantGood to hear. I love that place. The name is such a mouthful though :)
April 27, 2008 at 11:52 pm #623177
BonnieParticipantLOL! I know. Isn’t it really Coffee to a Tea with Sugar? Maybe not though.
April 27, 2008 at 11:55 pm #623178
charlabobParticipantLemon mini cupcakes — many many of them. (Like cookie crumbs, they have no calories.) :-) Seriously, the place is great — the loose tea is amazing. It’s home away from home.

TheHouseMemberThey’re AWESOME!! One of the best little coffee joints in WS. Great place to hang with your kids as well.

jbdParticipantMy little girl LOVES their mini cupcakes. Thanks for the post Bonnie. Good to know they accomodate large groups.

JoBParticipanti think that’s where the book club from Square One meets… great place!

addParticipantIt is a great place (coconut mini cupcakes .. I can never resist) and the owners are great community supporters. I have always found a comfortable spot there, whether by myself to get some work done, with one or two others for a social gathering, or 5-6 people for a meeting.
To make it even more complicated, I think the official name is Coffee To a Tea … with Sugar and then the baking part of it is Sugar Rush Baking Co. But whatever … we call it CTAT!

BonnieParticipantLots of moms groups meet there too. It’s great. (note to those who don’t want to be around kids…might be best to go during nap time. LOL!)

thelmasue75Memberas add mentioned, the CTAT folks give MAJORLY to the community. they donated to a function a couple years ago for pathfinder K-8 (public school) in a BIG way. owner shannon is a westsider and even dressed up as an elf during the winter holiday festivities in the junction. AND their cakes are amazingly delicious! support the locally owned, locally supportive CTAT and let madrona and ballard have cupcake royale!

BonnieParticipantFunny, I have never even stepped foot in Cupcake Royale.
April 30, 2008 at 4:02 pm #623186
GAnativeParticipantAnd I’d say don’t bother…not too long after CR opened in WS we stopped by early in the morning to get cupcakes for my daughter’s class for her bday and they wouldn’t sell us cupcakes because we had not pre-ordered and we wanted too many cupcakes and they would run out later in the day (not like they couldn’t make more or get them from another location). After swearing I would never go back I did once and even my kids didn’t like the cupcakes. But they beg to go to CTAT! Old fashion yellow cake with chocolate icing…YUM!

vincentMemberWhats with all the crazy cupcake royal hate? the cat lady at quiz night went off on how they didn’t ask permission from coffee to a tea before they moved in. Who cares? Its a coffee shop that sells fu fu cupcakes. Who did they replace again? does the mob demand ben and jerrys come back so they can be mad about that again too?
April 30, 2008 at 10:19 pm #623188
villagegreenMemberIndeed. The places have two completely different feels. One’s mainly a coffee shop and the other’s mainly a dessert joint. Personally, I prefer CR simply because it’s got the traditional coffee shop feel, cooler art work, and they play better music (while I’m working on my laptop). I expect others have completely valid reasons for preferring CTAT.

charlabobParticipantYup, my issue with Cupcake Royale is rudeness and a lack of customer service. I had the same, “How dare you want to buy a bunch of cupcakes without ordering 24 hours in advance” routine. They have (or had then) a limited number of minicupcakes that they would make. Even if I ordered ahead of time, they would not make any of their others into minis. Apparently lemon can’t fit in the pan :-)
AND I told them the phone number on their web site was incorrect — it was just after they added the WS branch. They acted suspicious (yeah, I frequently lie about telephone numbers) and annoyed.
Somehow I haven’t managed to find my way back there since that day.

AnonymousInactiveI tried CR in Ballard twice. Once for a cupcake. Terrible. Once for coffee. After the 3rd request for the correct coffee that I ordered, I said forget it. I tried WS in case it was just a fluke thing. Truly, the worst cupcake again. Pretty, but dry and flavorless. For a premium product and a premium price, I don’t understand the appeal.
And the employees seem like they have no real experience in desserts or coffee making. Or apparently customer service. What kind of business doesn’t want to sell you as much as you want to buy?
I’m afraid to try CTAT. I don’t actually need any cupcakes :) and everyone makes them sound so good.

JimmyGMemberCTAT isn’t my vibe, can’t put my finger on it, but I don’t get the “comfort level” I get at my local coffee spot (C & P) and I never want to linger.
Cupcake Royale has been good to me, I’ve never had bad service there and they have consistently pulled a damn fine shot of espresso, full of crema just how it should be.
To each their own…

barmargiaMemberI used to always travel to cupcake royale in Ballard, and was thrilled when they moved to West Seattle, I guess because I’m not a soccer mom I’ve never received very good service in CTAT, but I’ve been pretty happy each time at cupcake royale. For the person that had the beef because they couldn’t get a bunch of cupcakes without ordering 24 hours in advance, there are a couple cupcake places where you can’t get more than 12 if you don’t order 48 hours in advance.

celeste17ParticipantI love CTAT I go there all the time. I always get courteous service and a smile from the employees. I have commented to there suggestion box on their service and I have gotten coupons for a free cupcake. I love their carrot cake cupcakes and the red velvet. My only complaint is that I eat the cupcake to fast.

KeithMemberWhen I first moved to WS, my antidote for a bad day was a slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting and a glass of milk at CTATWS. Unfortunately I don’t think they still do cake by the slice, but it’s still a comforting place to unwind.
May 2, 2008 at 5:13 pm #623195
PillowArmyMemberIt took us months before we went into CTATWS. First of all, they have a terrible name. Secondly, they all but hide their amazing cupcakes from public view. Their cupcakes and coffee are SOO much better than Cupcake Royale across the street. If they had a zippier name and turned the cupcake display towards the sidewalk they’d be franchising in a matter of months. Perhaps they like being a WS secret?
