I am a fellow West Seattleite and I am looking to help out the local small businesses and non-profits in my community who are struggling. I would like to offer free consultant services to a business that is in need of someone to organize the projects they have or just to consult on best practices. My mission is to help businesses and non-profits who cannot afford professional project management services (and I get to help the community I love grow. Win-win!)

My objective is to meet with the business to determine the scale of their needs and determine if they need someone to lead a portfolio of projects, one or two projects, or just help organize their projects for easy execution (by either me or themselves – depending on the work involved since I currently work as a Project Manager). We can then agree on the time frame of services and the expectations of how many hours per week. Also, you may not even know what you need and I can listen and guide you to your best options.

On Monday, my 9-year-old chalked a message on the sidewalk outside of our home near California & Andover. Today, for the first time in our long sidewalk chalk history, SOMEBODY SCRUBBED THE MESSAGE OFF OF THE SIDEWALK!

No, this was not just some non-specific joy-hater. The colorful graphic my son chalked nearby was untouched. Only the message of support for our black community (and all who protest systemic racist violence and oppression) was erased.

I know that racism lives everywhere but I will admit I expected more from our community. We will be back out there today, chalk in hand. I invite all of the people in West Seattle who believe racism or bigotry of any kind has no place in our community to do the same.

DISCLAIMER: This post is not about my daughter’s chalk art. If that is our biggest woe, I’ll count us lucky. This is about the people hiding in our community who are so confident and convicted in their hate that they will take the time to scrub out another person’s voice

Followed a dump truck down Avalon yesterday. Truck had a sign on back saying not responsible for windshield damage. I thought there was a law that they had to cover their load and were responsible for anything that comes loose.

There is a Labcorp blood draw place inside of Chi Franciscan on Alaska. Although it is inside the building it is a separate business and as far as I know you can make an appointment just with them as they do bill separately from my doctor who is in that building.

You can call Chi Fransican and ask them for the lab number +12069710425.

When I was a kid, if it was light out they came through our neighborhood.

Pandemic? Curbside service, at your house. As long as the driver is practicing good sanitation, shouldn’t be an issue.

Hi Hannah, sorry for the late reply. I’ve been so busy taking care of my daughter (and enjoying it), I forgot that I had posted this! I am still in need, though, and quite flexible. It would be great to see if we can work something out. This is my first time posting in this forum, so I’m not sure how to proceed. You can call me 206-439-6845. This is my land line.

Merilieu, thank you for making a very valid point. The impact of dogs is directly related to human behavior, and humans are indeed the greatest plague on earth. So there you go. Humans make a lot of senseless, selfish choices and the dogs are just along for the ride. They’re not to blame – they are just doing what dogs do, but the impact is real just the same and should not be minimized. The human species in general (and individuals in particular) tends to think way too highly of itself.

Dogs are the avatar of evil in this world, eh? Doubtful.

My dog doesn’t drive a car, engage in deforestation, damaging wetlands for the sake of earning a few more dollars or anything else.

I, on the other hand, drive a diesel pickup, have motorcycle for fun, work in a steel mill and consume to products of agribusiness.

I make it sounds worse than it is to make a point, before you feel smug. People are responsible for ecological damage. If dogs are perceived as predators that’s because they are. But they aren’t able to engage in the mass killings that humans are capable of.

So, dogs aren’t the problem, Merilieu, you are…as are the rest of us and, as such we are responsible for limiting our impact.

Merilieu, everything you posted is true for humans as well. Humans displace far more wildlife and have a significantly larger environmental impact than dogs ever will.

I’m all for keeping dogs under control, and following the leash and scoop laws. But your argument is just silly.

Recommendations, please! Really simple job. Need a new kitchen faucet installed. Straightforward, nothing unusual about this job. Would prefer an individual over a company (I know O’Neil and other companies are great but this is just so small that it is hardly worth their time. $$$).

I normally would use Joe The Plumber for a job like this but his website says he won’t be working for the next month.

It’s interesting that no one has brought up the effect of dogs on the beach on the environment. I’m just going to paste this here, for purposes of education and (optimistically) enlightenment, of all dog owners:

The evidence that dogs negatively impact wildlife is overwhelming. It is clear that people with dogs – on
leash or off – are much more detrimental to wildlife than people without dogs. Dogs (Canis lupus
familiaris) are considered to be a subspecies of wolves (Canis lupus), and wildlife perceive dogs as
    (30)
    predators.
    Impacts include:
    1. Physical and temporal displacement – The presence of dogs causes wildlife to move away, temporarily or permanently reducing the amount of available habitat in which to feed, breed and rest. Animals become less active during the day to avoid dog interactions. Furthermore, the scent of dogs repels wildlife and the effects remain after the dogs are gone.
    2. Disturbance and stress response – Animals are alarmed and cease their routine activities. This increases the amount of energy they use, while simultaneously reducing their opportunities to feed. Repeated stress causes long-term impacts on wildlife including reduced reproduction and growth, suppressed immune system and increased vulnerability to disease and parasites.
    3. Indirect and direct mortality – Dogs transmit diseases (such as canine distemper and rabies) to and from wildlife. Loose dogs kill wildlife.
    4. Human disease and water quality impacts – Dog waste pollutes water and transmits harmful parasites and diseases to people.

Please note, your dogs’ scent, and therefore its negative effects, remain long after you go home.

The Christian Cooper story is not about dogs, it’s about a crappy owner.

I get the impression, in your last post, that you’re afraid of dogs. Is that the case? There’s no shame in it. That said, MOST, dogs (never all) don’t have any plan at all to attack you. My pitbull (that’s right), who’s cute and friendly and loves children as she rolls on her back for them to give her a scratch, has no plans to attack anything except the food in her bowl or my beer can.

Finally, people do understand. They know the rules. They openly flout them for whatever reason betting that there will be no consequence and, guess what there usually isn’t.

You’re going to do yourself harm if you keep going this way.

I went to the junction today to pick up some lunch and groceries for the week and had two very different experiences today.

Coastline has an amazing setup. You order in advance via their mobile site and your meal is pre-bagged and waiting for you on a table that separates you from the workers. Everyone was wearing a mask. I felt very safe and could tell that everyone is taking the necessary precautions.

Contrast this with the Seattle Fish Company where nobody was wearing masks and there is no guidance on how to avoid close proximity to employees or other shoppers. They have amazing seafood, but I turned around and walked out.

Is anyone else avoiding businesses that aren’t mandating the use of face masks?

Thanks TR, agreed. They sell more of the less common types of plants. I’ve tried West Seattle nursery but their selection of varieties is very slim. Thought about going over to vashon but never could figure out a way to pay with my orca card online so I wouldn’t have to touch anything. Hope they come back soon.

I highly recommend Dr. Kyle Smits and his team on California Ave (near Juneau Street). He has been my dentist for 9 years now. I went in on Monday for a 90 minute procedure and felt very safe. Face masks goggles and face shields the whole time, extra rinse, plexiglass shield at the front counter, no encounters between patients and – of course – as professional and friendly as always.
