AnonymousInactiveWhoa, that’s loud. I should not have watched the Ramstein air show videos on YouTube… : (

flowerpetalMemberOooh, I’m sorry that the practice frightens you. I’m watching them practice as I write this; excuse any errors! I’m conflicted because I don’t usually like shows of military saber rattling… and I find the Blue Angels to be beautiful to watch and my heart swells!
Maybe I have a split personality disorder! :~)
July 31, 2008 at 6:46 pm #632872
austinMemberThey frighten my kitties, who somehow justify blaming me for it.

WSBKeymasterI am in flowerpetal’s court. In particular, even more than the airshow itself, the takeoffs and landings from the Museum of Flight/Boeing Field are amazing to watch. On the Thursday practice day, they don’t do the “walkdown,” but for the Friday-Sunday performances, they do, and that is worth staking out a spot on the fence at the south side of M-of-F to see
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=2612
(we will be at the lake tomorrow to watch the airshow and hydro practicing for free for a while, but then Saturday and Sunday I’ll be on the fence at the M-of-F for the takeoffs and landings, barring breaking news – luckily we have two means of wireless connectivity now so work does not have to cease for this annual addiction)
Oh well. Back to West Seattle news. Can’t get back to M-of-F for the afternoon practice today, got a hot story in The Junction with a 2 pm interview … TR

AnonymousInactiveGreat, TR, now I’m totally curious about this “hot story”! Guess I’ll have to stay tuned….
I’m with flowerpetal also.
It’s amazing to watch them flying so low and so close. A little scary, but extremely exciting!
My little dog is terrified though.

jMemberI don’t know what it is about the Blue Angels, but they make me get all happy and sappy. Every year when I watch them, my eyes “water” because I think they are so amazing to watch.
July 31, 2008 at 8:16 pm #632876
flowerpetalMemberO.K. I’ll fess up. I said “my heart swells” which is true; but I too like j get misty eyed.

SueParticipantMaryT – the sound of them frightens me too, but then that’s most likely related to my being in NYC on 9/11 . . . not a big fan of low-flying, loud planes as you might imagine. My first summer in Seattle, when I knew nothing about them and didn’t know to expect it, I nearly started screaming when I first heard it downtown. Now I still don’t like it, but at least I’m expecting it.
My husband, on the other hand, loves them. He was working at the backyard table today hoping to see them. Was on a conference call when they went about 100 feet overhead – he said it was very cool, even if he couldn’t hear any of the call. Good thing for the mute button. And good thing I’m downtown and wasn’t there. :)

HPMemberIm with j I just love to see them and hear them. And still cant figure out how they pull it off!!!!!!Its Amazing…
July 31, 2008 at 9:11 pm #632879
cjboffoliParticipantMary T: I’d bet there are certain places in the world where people would empathize with your sentiment as for them that thunderous roar we’re hearing is usually followed by the ground-shaking blast of a 1000 lb JDAM finding its target. Just be thankful you’re not an “evil-doer” :-)
July 31, 2008 at 9:22 pm #632880
BonnieParticipantThey scare my son but luckily he hasn’t seen or heard them yet.
July 31, 2008 at 11:05 pm #632881
BayouMemberI can appreciate them a lot more now that I don’t live on Lake Washington anymore. I first found out about the show while I was at home with a migraine. I was on my couch having WWIII dreams when I woke up in a sweat. It felt pretty surreal, so I can only imagine the panic that you must have felt, Sue.
July 31, 2008 at 11:10 pm #632882
guidosmomMemberThey scare the crap out of me too! I can’t stand them.
July 31, 2008 at 11:19 pm #632883
elgregoMemberHarden up, people. Stop being a city full of pansies. The scary planes will go away in a couple of days and then you can go back to hearing the normal dull roar of planes heading to SEATAC and the rumble of construction vehicles building your new townhomes.
July 31, 2008 at 11:39 pm #632884
villagegreenMemberI don’t find them frightening – just annoying. Try working in Georgetown and listening to them take off and land all day long, all the while setting off car alarms left and right.
I’ve seen the air show over Lake Washington and will admit it’s pretty cool, but having seen it once I just don’t feel the need to see it each year. And so, I don’t really look forward to them roaring over head while I’m trying to go about my daily life. Maybe I’m a pansy, but at least I don’t cry while watching them :)

GenHillOneParticipantJoB – (toward the bottom)

LOVE THEM. I worked around Leschi 15+ years ago. We used to go on the roof of our building and they had very loose restrictions then – they came down really close…following the line of the hillside to the lake. When upside down, you could look right into the cockpit from our rooftop :) The restaurant nearby would stop serving because everything shook so much – forget carrying a tray full of drinks! No one cared, they were all standing outside watching anyway.

WSBKeymasterRe: what cjboffoli said …
While at the Museum of Flight at midday today, as usual, tons of kids. First the whole M-o-F daycamp group; then a lady with a couple 8-year-old-ish boys. One of whom, had many a morbid question. “Mommm, what if somebody gets killed?” “Mo-ommm, what if somebody dropped a nuclear bomb?” “Mo-ommm …”
August 1, 2008 at 1:45 am #632888
angelescrestParticipantI’m scared of them too. I want to dive for cover, like I did when, traveling as a teen, I ended up in a bomb shelter on the Lebanese-Israeli border…and the sound of bombs falling: unforgettable.

MargLMemberWe were at Gene Coulon park while the Blangels were practicing but they were too far away to be fun to watch.
Having SeaTac change the flight path so all the BIG airplanes were flying RIGHT OVER our house -was- kind of fun. A 747 flew straight over us. I found myself hoping they weren’t going to dump blue water…
August 1, 2008 at 3:32 am #632890
KenParticipantI worked on the flight line at an AF base as a teen. I Like fast planes up close.
I also came to Seattle early enough to be working in a highrise in the 90’s one of the last years they buzzed downtown at low altitude.
I remember looking down at them from the conference room window as the CFO kept droning on.
I think that was 96 but it could have been earlier. I am pretty sure they scared the crap out of some people so they we not allowed to do that in subsequent years. I think there was also a few years they did not fly here.
Perhaps WSB would know when that last “between the buildings” buzz took place.
August 1, 2008 at 3:43 am #632891
GenHillOneParticipantKen – you’re in the ballpark with 96. The last year I was on the Leschi rooftop was 94 and I think the rules tightened up soon thereafter, 95 or 96.
August 1, 2008 at 3:55 am #632892
ErikParticipantWe lived on the top floor of a condo (during the 90’s) across the Duwamish River from the MOF and always had a front row seat. I remember when they would line up their delta formation a few hundred feet over our heads…quite cool.

WSBKeymasterReviewing that spotty Blue Angels Seattle history from the mid-90s, I found one newspaper passage (I was at KOMO at the time and don’t remember a whole lot about exactly what happened when, except that in 1996 when Junior Member of the Team was a baby, we went to the viewpoint at the north end of California to watch them over Elliott Bay, and he was NOT HAPPY … he hates them to this day) … anyway, the newspaper excerpt :
>>From 1971 to 1993, the Federal Aviation Administration granted a safety-rule waiver to the Navy flight demonstration team that allowed the aircraft to maneuver directly over masses of recreational boaters on the lake. But in 1994 and 1995, the Blue Angels didn’t come to Seafair because the agency refused such waivers.<<
’94 was the Snowbirds, ’95 was nothin’, ’96 was Blue Angels over Elliott Bay.

pamMemberIt was so wonderful when they banned them over the lake for a few years and they went right over the city, West Seattle and Elliott Bay. The house would just rattle for the one or two hours of those THREE DAYS out of the year – for crying out loud, it’s the same weekend every year you can take an out of town vacation if you don’t like it.
