Just so you all know, the Times story is nothing new at all – nothing in this story (which I read last night) is news. This study has been under way for a year and we have covered it here extensively – it’s a case of a citywide media source deciding to jump into something happening in a neighborhood.

I don’t know if the first post came before or after we published our first update on the main page … we were at the 34th District marathon when the first call came in from someone, and I paged Seattle Public Utilities’ media rep to confirm (a) there WAS a break and (b) its location – Christopher was able to go report from the scene for us so that we didn’t have to bust out of the 34th before they got to the main event, the mayoral endorsement.

Whoever it was who called us, THANK YOU (Patrick didn’t catch the name, it was VERY loud in The Hall at Fauntleroy) … this is the kind of thing that doesn’t turn up on 911 (the Fire Dept. eventually got involved but not till much later) so without tips, unless it’s happening at our house too (we checked – no), we won’t be able to check on it!

We spend the entirety of the fair within feet of the police assigned there (once again this year we are in the booth at the center of the action, the big tent @ California/Alaska) and last year there was no rushing off for heinousness (knock wood). It is historically a very mellow event. Likely to be a big crowd for Mudhoney at 8:10 pm Friday – but big does not necessarily equal trouble.

city ordinance passed in 2002 that allows public postings on city-owned utility poles, lamp poles, and traffic control devices. This Seattle ordinance allowing public sign postings was passed after the Washington State Court of Appeals declared the prior Seattle ordinance banning public sign postings as violating our Washington State Constitution.

Way back then, we tried to talk to the property owner to find out exactly what happened, but he ended the conversation when he realized we were reporters trying to research a news story. Morgan Junction’s had a lot of upgrades since then, so maybe it will be more attractive soon for something to be done with that parcel. The work/live/etc. project across Graham (where the buildings were demolished a few months ago) is awaiting market improvement too, at last report.

Banned in Seattle, but like it or not- allowed in unincorporated King County 9am-midnight July 4. A thousand neighbors two blocks south of me take full advantage of this.

The Junction Assoc. folks were out on Monday so I don’t have official info. But given the semi-recent discussion about cleanliness, thought I would share this photo that actually came from Forum member “westseattledood”:

A firm called Clean A Can, with a spiffy blue truck, was making the rounds in The Junction Monday morning. The trash cans gleamed as a result. Will be checking when WSJA staff return to see what else is afoot, agleam, awash, etc.

Probably depends on how big your yard is, what your current landscaping has in it, and how ‘natural’ vs. ‘landscaped’ you want your yard to look. One option for low water/low maintenance would be replacing your grass with a no-mow and drought resistant plant like clover.

Believe it or not, it’s NOT the “Hi-Yu Parade.”

It’s the American Legion Grand Parade.

It happens during the Hi-Yu Festival, and the Hi-Yu Festival float participates in it, but they do not sponsor or present the parade.

for months (and yes, July 18 is the day), but under the name American Legion Grand Parade. The local American Legion lodge organizes and presents it.

It’s preceded by the Kiddies Parade presented by the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle.

The big July 11th event is West Seattle Summer Fest in The Junction (WSB sponsor) – happening July 10-11-12. Also, the Seafair Pirates Landing at Alki is July 11.

Did you read the article about why this happened with Skillet? Their backup trailer wasn’t ready but they had to use it. And, unfortunately, that was the day the inspector came by. Not as ‘hazardous’ as it sounds from your list.

Lucile – after noticing this is multiple threads, I just gotta ask…what’s with the Eastside bashing? Seems like there must be a good story behind your apparent hate for the “rich-filled” Eastside.

EDIT: Just saw your comment in the Marin’d thread (https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=5241) and think it’s odd that there you say people shouldn’t be judged by where they live.

mom2soren, I don’t think anyone was talking about leaving dogs in cars on cool days, but the safety of that practice is debatable. First of all, if it’s sunny, the car can become an oven even when it’s not hot outside. I think this flyer says it all:

I took photos of even more businesses than were shown in our coverage. Busy, busy, busy. And it seemed to pick up further as the day went on – when we passed Duke’s the first time, the street level outdoor tables were open and the upper outdoor deck full; walking by in the other direction a while later, both outdoor levels were jumping, and people were inside too. While they were almost alone in semi-complaining last year, this year they were quite pointedly quoted with positivity in one of the early news releases announcing the event.

I’d say it went pretty well. Some don’t disagree: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=17382 . Alki was a much more lighthearted environment than usual. I don’t know if it was because of the police presence or the fact that you couldn’t drive directly to the beach but there was a notable lack of hooliganism which is otherwise so often present there. I walked from about luna park to the other end of alki and there were more people out biking and walking than usual along the entire stretch but there were a TON of people at the beach. Lot of fun stuff happening, volleyball, live music, restaurant patios were all packed. There’s nothing in the world that everyone’s gonna like but this event was well attended, enjoyable, and much more well run / organized than last year.
