Sometimes I wonder whether the DNC isn’t actually managing the Republican Presidential effort. I mean . . . who else could have picked such an unelectable bunch of wannabes?

I’m not saying Republican candidates are dumb or evil, or anything like that. But if politics were a TV show (which it is) Obama would be the Super Bowl and Republicans would be the beer commercials.

Oh, Ron Paul has some interesting theories, I suppose. But he’s rather shrill. And he’s too much of an idealogue for the average American anyway. (As we know, Americans prefer candidates with simplistic slogans like “Hope” and “Change” to candidates who exhort them to “Read the Constitution.”)

Rick Santorum is a good speaker, but his religious politics and reflexively pro-business voting record put him at odds with the majority of Americans.

Perry? -No. His Religious Right connections will sink him. If there’s anything worse than an idealogue, it’s a religious zealot. The Iowa poll will turn out to be the kiss-of-death for him.

Bachman? -Nope. Same as Perry. Religious zealot.

Gingrich? -Huh-uh. He’s old news. Plus, he’s seen as corrupt. And a hack.

Romney might be able to give Obama a run for his money. If he can just deflect the Mormon question. (Yes. It matters.)

Unfortunately, Romney doesn’t have that much to brag about in Pennsylvania. And what he does have (health care reform) actually looks a lot like the Obama’s brag sheet. So to stay real, Romney will have to steer clear of his record or anything else of substance. And this is NOT a winning strategy for an OUTsider, unless the INsider is a big-time screw-up, which Obama isn’t.

So Romney’s about it for the Republicans, I’m afraid. At this point, he’s the only one I see who even comes close to being a brand-name candidate.

The others are just too . . . well . . . off-brand.

Now please re-read the penultimate paragraph, and as you do so note that I penned these words over a year ago, when the so-called race still sort of looked like one. (It played well in Peoria anyway.)

Then a few months after I wrote this, El Dobro comes on the forum and goes, “It’s gonna be Romney! You heard it here first!”

And I’m like . . . whuuuuuhhhh?

I just had to smile at that one. I thought, who does this puppy think he’s kiddin’ with his “you heard it here first”? We didn’t even hear about Romney from ME first, dude. Not even close. Other people been sayin’ it all along.

But was I pissed when dobro said that? Naw, I wasn’t pissed. I just took it as another proof of the old adage that some people are so broke they can’t even pay ATTENTION.

Especially the ones who rag on me.

Maybe it’s one of those Human Condition things, you know? Like, if someone says something you wanna hear – something that confirms your existing view of the world – then yeah, you might just remember that they said it. But more likely, all you’ll remember is that you LIKE this person, ‘cuz that’s all you really needed to know about them anyway, isn’t it? It’s like dogs doing the mutual hiney sniff. Let’s see if we’re both on the same side now, ‘kay?

But Heaven help the one who says something that challenges your worldview, because obviously that person is The Enemy.

Is this not what’s been going on here? I mean, I know that I’ve said things to offend people. Yeah, so what? It’s me, Notorious D.B.P.

But as the election draws close, suddenly you think I’ve always been in league with the Devil just ‘cuz I repeat what I’ve been saying about the Democratic Party all along? (That they go in for corporate sluttery.)

Excuse me. And suddenly this is NEWS to you guys?

Like, was there maybe somebody living in a yurt somewhere who didn’t already KNOW that the Democratic Party is merely the left wing of corporate capitalism?

C’mon, dudes. Get real and start paying attention. You don’t have that much time left.

Perhaps you’ll remember this one. It’s from my chart-topping album: “DBP Sings the Gospel Favorites.”

The OP was about whether President Obama had the right to mandate birth-control coverage, and my position was that he not only had the legal right but the moral right as well.

As part of my argument, I pointed out that the Catholic Church was in decline as a result of the Pope’s retrograde stance on birth control and other social issues. The kootchman then made one of his typically obtuse rejoinders, namely, that the Church was actually growing, in terms of the number of Catholics that were out there.

To which I replied:

I didn’t say the Catholic Church was declining in absolute numbers. I said the Church (read: the Vatican) was declining in moral influence among the so-called faithful. Which it is.

In fact, it’s probably at an all-time low, and for good reason. At a time when children are starving to death because their parents can’t feed them, it is a shameful thing for the Pope or ANYONE ELSE to say to these people: “You shouldn’t use contraception, because it’s against God’s will. You should be having MORE babies, not fewer.”

There are only three possible conclusions to be drawn from a statement like that:

1) God doesn’t want people to have sex unless they intend to have a baby every time they do.

2) God wants children to starve to death.

3) The Pope is a fool.

Now then . . . Knowing what I know about God, and knowing what I know about the Pope, I’m going to have go with #3.

that article is from 2011, and their pie chart shows even fewer filers with incomes under $100,000 getting hit with AMT – like about half of those represented in the CBPP chart from 2007.

i’m not saying that the AMT isn’t creeping. but can we drop the hyperbole and talk about the facts?

the fact is that the bush tax cuts increased the reach of the AMT by lowering everyone’s regular income taxes.

another fact: four states – california, new york, new jersey, and massachusetts – pay about 46% of all AMT revenue.

note that these are all blue states.

the AMT can be fixed by indexing it to inflation. but another fix would be to simply cap it.

i see the effects of the AMT creeping, but let’s be realistic here: there’s no good reason to do away with it altogether, because it still serves its function of taxing people who would otherwise squirt through loopholes and pay zero in taxes on vast amounts of investment income.

The original post was based on my observation that the Republican National Convention was lily white and thus not representative of the American people. Hell, it wasn’t even representative of the Republican people.

Not surprisingly, a couple of the conservative people here took issue, one going so far as to imply that I was a reverse racist for being so hard on White folks. That thread is at 72 posts and counting, many of them mine.

Redblack-I still have libertarian leanings. After the financial collapse, the BP oil spill, Citizens United, etc., I gave up on laissez-faire economics; but I still am adamant about social libertarianism and foreign policies that don’t install the US as the police officer to the world.

In fact, if it looks like President Obama will win WA easily, I might vote for Gary Johnson instead.

(Sidenote: I’ve also liked much of what I’ve read about Jill Stein and the Green Party’s platform, so that may be a possibility also.)

That said, DBP has a history (from what I’ve seen) of regurgitating the same GOP talking points I’ve seen on DrudgeReport, TownHall, and other conservative sites. Remember the “apology” thread?

The only folks claiming that the president “apologized” are the most ardent of GOPers. No one remotely impartial has claimed that.

He’s also been very dismissive of the GOP attacks on women’s healthcare and reproductive rights. Libertarians are predominantly pro-choice, though perhaps 40% or so are anti-abortion. However, REAL libertarians believe that government should never step in between a person and their doctor and that, ultimately, people have a right to control their own bodies. This trumps their own personal feelings about abortion.

I also remember DBP being a defender of the “National Day of Prayer” on WSB. He tried to portray the event as not being political, even though the event itself was created by evangelists James and Shirley Dobson of the Family Research Council, an organization at the forefront of fighting marriage equality, opposing LGBT issues, and committed to destroying the separation of church and state. These things tend to be non-starters for REAL libertarians.

DBP may be an economic libertarian. I would say that economic libertarianism is extremely difficult to defend, given the current state of our nation. But he is not a social libertarian because of his opposition to individual rights.

My family has lived in the High Point community since 2007 and we really enjoy living here. One con it that there really is no retail space to walk to except for the businesses around 35th and Morgan and the library. But you’re a short walk to Camp Long and there are lots of little parks in the neighborhood. We walk with our daughter around the neighborhood often; to the parks, the library, the p-patch and market gardens, the pond. Like I said earlier, we really enjoy living here.

For those of you who don’t know this, Jan Seeley (JanS on the Blog) has been in a state of deteriorating health for the past several years. She’s got a rare disorder that is slowly destroying her kidneys and, as if that weren’t enough, while she’s been waiting for a suitable donor to come forward, she’s had to deal with all these other problems, including most recently a bout with pneumonia and some clogged plumbing of the aorta thingy. (I hesitate to say “heart,” because her heart’s always seemed to be in perfect condition to me.)

Jan had a fundraiser at the Feedback Lounge a couple of years ago, and we had hoped it would be enough to see her through. But alas, nobody thought the wait for a kidney would go on this long.

Jan thought about doing another fundraiser this fall, but the stars just weren’t in alignment, so she decided to do some Internet-style fundraising instead. When she showed me her fundraiser Web page I said, “Wow! This is great. So . . . when are you gonna tell everyone on the Blog about it?”

And then I heard crickets. Great big silly ones.

See, Jan is really, really shy about asking for help. And frankly, that’s something I just don’t get. ‘Cuz you know, if it were me, I’d be on here selling my cats, selling my kids, selling other people’s kids . . . whatever it takes.

But Jan’s not me, obviously.

Ha. Yeah, I know that’s a shocker.

Jan’ not me at all.

She’s shy. She’s humble.

        She’s deserving.

But notwithstanding that, I’m still gonna do what I have to do to get help for her. ‘Cuz she’s my pal, see? And I help my pals. All of ’em.

Apparently nobody wants to read about Crohn’s Disease so I’m taking another approach.

A couple weeks ago a West Seattle Blog reader (Margie) posted about her attempts to raise funds supporting her half-marathon run benefiting the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

If a local glassblower were to create some glass pumpkins and donate them to Margie would there be some West Seattle Blog readers that would be willing to pony up a meager $40 to support this worthy cause? 100% of the proceeds from glass pumpkin sales will go to fund Margie’s effort. I just need to sell 20 of them (well, technically only 17 left to go as someone already bought 3). just throwing it out there. I know we all have different approaches to helping our neighbors and this is one of mine.
