SPD keeps saying the main purpose of the cameras is “port security”, but these cameras are the wrong type to use for viewing passing ships. The half-dome types usually have short-medium focal length lenses and can be rotated to point straight down. To record things 500′ to 2 miles away on the horizon, you need long lenses and there’s no need to look down. It seems clear to me that “port security” was just the excuse they used to get the grant money. Spying on the general public is the real purpose.

Ask any lawyer and they’ll tell you that it’s best to avoid making statements to the police – this is because they can always twist your words around and decide you’re a suspect, for anything. With surveillance cameras it’s more a matter of them being able to use any move you make any time against you, or just the fact that you were there.

I wouldn’t let the police to install cameras in my home, regardless of whether or not I have anything ‘to hide’. Alki Beach, West Seattle, is my home too. I’m not going to let them collect potential evidence 24/7 whenever I walk down the street. These cameras will come down.

    By the way – where is that petition? This link isn’t working now;

I am the owner and one of the acupuncturists at the Community Acupuncture Project of West Seattle. We lease the building next door to this proposed project at 4535 44th Ave SW. It is currently in the Early Design Guidance phase of Design Review and they have not yet applied for their MUP application. The EDG Meeting is scheduled for 5/9/13.

Community acupuncture strives to make a powerful healing tool affordable to the neighborhood. Our sliding scale is $15-40 for a treatment in a quiet room with soothing music and other members of the community intentionally healing physical and emotional pain and illness.

Tearing down an existing structure and building a four story commercial/residential building is noisy and time consuming. This proposed project adjacent to the clinic, shares a driveway and is literally a few feet away from our building.

Last week we gave 94 treatments in this clinic. A quiet atmosphere is essential to an effective acupuncture experience.

Our patients come with a wide range of health concerns and are often surprised at how effective regular acupuncture is at improving their health and quality of life.

In April, we gave 337 treatments and in 2012, we provided 2184 treatments. Our patients are members of the West Seattle community: servers, librarians, realtors, homemakers, veterans, retirees, baristas, postal workers, musicians, nurses, artists, parents, and neighbors.

We want to keep this vital community resource in the Junction. We are currently in conversation with the city about options for limiting hours of construction to allow for quiet clinic hours and when the clinic is closed, louder construction work. We sincerely hope that a balance can be met so that our clinic can remain open and our patients may continue to receive quality and peaceful health care.

If you would like to learn more, please attend the Early Design Guidance meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 6:30pm at the West Seattle Senior Center – 4217 SW Oregon St @ California.

JKB, have you contacted Metro’s Lost & Found, in case the driver found the cards, (or a passenger found them and turned them in to the driver)?

    http://metro.kingcounty.gov/cs/lostnfound.html

Just a note though, I got an e-mail from Metro earlier today, stating that due to construction near their office, the Customer Service number; 206-553-3000, could be disrupted overnight until 6:00 am tomorrow.

Also, did you register your ORCA Card? If so, you can put a freeze on its use, and if you end up getting a replacement card, they can transfer the balance from the old one to the new one.

Hey, with 85,000 people on the peninsula at last estimate, for every seller there’s about 300 prospective buyers. AND we advertise it (online calendars, classifieds, etc.) outside the peninsula – even to Vashon, where folks are just a ferry ride away – plus, WSB is read outside WS (on an average month, about 140,000 people stop by at least once)!

But your best customers, according to everything we’ve seen and heard over the years, are your neighbors… that’s part of why we enjoy sponsoring it – one of the ways computer communication can be used to encourage F2F interaction. Good luck with your sale! – Tracy

Hi Everyone! We are looking for someone that can provide a temporary foster home for Oliver, from end of May through the beginning of September. If you can provide this kind, generous service, please contact us at furryfaces@hotmail.com

To see photos of Oliver, please go to our Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/furryfacesfoundation?ref=tn_tnmn

Here is the request Oliver’s dad sent to us:

I have an adopted, roughly 12-year old American Short-hair named Oliver who desperately needs a foster home this summer (late May-end of August, possibly September).

I have been consistently under-employed for two years. I have an opportunity to explore job markets in California this summer, but I can only do it if I sublet my apartment. I’ve found a subletter, and I’ve tried in vain over two weeks to find a friend who can take Oliver in.

Can you help? Oliver and I are seriously bonded. I’ve already turned down someone who would take him permanently, but not temporarily. I want to get my work life and finances back on track, and then I will take him back into whatever home I’ve settled on after the summer.

About Oliver: roughly 12-year-old adoptee kitty; I’ve had him for 3 years, and he made a move with me from Washington, DC. Very large. Very shy at first, then a total cuddle junky once he knows who is feeding him. Sleeps all the time, too lazy to scamper around making messes or breaking things. Will come with food and litter. Probably wouldn’t prefer sharing a foster family with other kitties, but he’s also very adaptable.

I wrote up the following event. Feel free to modify or join the fun.

We need to build a formal list of items to find and finalize it nearer to the date of the event.

Event date and time: May 11, 9am to 3pm

    https://westseattleblog.com/wsgaragesaledaymap

    Rules:

Anyone can find any item so don’t think that girls can only look for

    girl clothes etc.

Coordinate amongst your friends. This is a public event so I don’t want

any one site to become too unmanageable.

Scoring: I am trying to choose rare items so each item is worth one point.

Take pictures on your phone and either store them for comparison later

or text them to your friends.

Don’t stop at one. If you find duplicates of the same item or two good

70’s era shirts that are distinctly different, take a picture of both

in case your friends reject one as marginal or not authentic enough.

Don’t cheat. Don’t raid your closet for points. Clothing must not

currently belong to you unless you purchase it the day of the event.

Multi-task: If you need a costume for Halloween consider building it

on the day of the event.

Modifying a regular shirt to conform to an era style does not count so

don’t take a woman’s shirt and tie knots in it to make it conform.

If you find something unique you want points for notify friends ASAP

so they can start looking for something similar. You won’t get points

if your friends don’t have adequate time to look for a similar object.

And don’t expect points for it if the object was not on the list from the

    beginning.

    Okay, here’s the WSB article.

From that, it sounds like they were planning on a name change, and change of menu, but the fact that “next month” is referenced, tells me there was no interim shutdown planned.

Must not have been my day for riding a bike, because on my ride home I got “nudged” by a truck on Alaskan Way (where the construction is happening near Main St).

Close call, but sure wish there was more room on the shoulders where the temporary fencing is. Or it would be nice if there weren’t so many single-occupancy gas-powered 4-wheel vehicles around.

Just another reminder to please pay attention when driving 2+ ton (killing?) machines. I blame myself in this case though because I assumed the fencing gave consistent spacing along the shoulder for the entire distance of Alaskan Way.

Just a friendly reminder for drivers to please stop at the appropriate line and not block the bike box at Andover & Delridge.

    http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bikeboxes.htm

The weather is getting nicer and May is bike-to-work month, so there will be lots more people riding bikes. Keeping it safe for everyone is the primary goal. I believe it is illegal to block the bike box (see SMC 11.50.320), and I believe it is a $124 fine.

There wasn’t a major incident this morning, but I was asked “what my problem was” when I got in front of a car blocking the bike box (so I was partially in the crosswalk). As I told the driver that he is supposed to stop behind the bike box, he proceeded to tell me that “bikes need to go the speed limit”. As we turned, he called me an @$$hole.

    https://vimeo.com/64816510

And yesterday I almost got t-boned by a girl who slammed on her brakes (at Fauntleroy & Alaska) as I was going across a crosswalk. I had the pedestrian signal. She had the red light. And was on her phone.

So please…all I ask is for drivers to pay attention and follow the rules.

Thanks, and have a joyous day! It’s so nice outside!

Just for accuracy’s sake, since we have covered this one since a couple of WSB readers first pointed out the unannounced cameras’ installation:

The stated/procured purpose was NOT to deter/solve/fight street crime. It was “port security.” This is where much of the hue and cry originated once the camera plan came to light two and a half months ago – not all from people opposed to the idea of cameras; many were concerned about the fact the installation was done without the public being told/asked first. How that happened has never really been explained thoroughly, aside from one police official saying somebody somewhere dropped the proverbial ball. They have continued to address public concerns as if they were only concerns about privacy.

Once it was explained they were purchased through a “port security” grant from the Department of Homeland Security – authorized last year without any mention of cameras in recreational/residential areas – the questions included, what is “port security” about a camera over the Fauntleroy ferry dock bus stop or the Statue of Liberty Plaza (including cameras that originally were turned away from the water)?

SPD eventually, at City Council/Mayoral request, gave some briefings and said that street-crime fighting would be a benefit (along with a variety of others).

Also, though somehow they’re being referred to as the “Alki cameras,” just wanted to remind folks that they are not just Alki. There’s one in Admiral, one in Fauntleroy, and then dozens more slated for elsewhere in the city, some installed, some not yet, stretching to the Ballard vicinity. One of our original reports included a reference to an SFD tech official quoted last year as saying it could/would eventually be part of an even bigger citywide system. It’s all tied to a wireless communication system – designed to work, SPD said, with or without the cameras – that will enable public-safety personnel to communicate even if regular wireless networks get overwhelmed.

We don’t editorialize, so this is not a pro/con statement. Just the background. Our coverage archive (reverse chronological), for anyone interested, is at:

    https://westseattleblog.com/category/seattle-police-surveillance-cameras

    -Tracy

P.S. And if anyone wants to voice an opinion, pro/con or otherwise, the mayor has yet to announce his decision on activating them – last time we asked, they said they were awaiting more public meetings to be scheduled by SPD – so I’m sure he’s still interested in hearing thoughts from the citizenry.
