pamMemberJust call the main school district number and ask them to direct you to someone who can tell you what school your child has been assigned to. You could call the schools in the area (Lafayette, Arbor Heights, Roxhill, Schimtz Park, Highland Park) to see if your child is enrolled there but call reasonably early as the offices will be extremely busy today as you can imagine. Secetaries should be answering the phones by 7:30.

CountingCoupMemberNR,
All I am saying is that I do not know all of the aboriginal issues that may be driving this particular bill to afford aboriginal Hawaiians the same sovereignty Alaska’s own Inuits receive and its very apparent you don’t either.
So what is your true mod-us operand’s by bringing up a Hawaiian Bill?
To paint Barack Obama with broad brush that he is not a unit-er?
He’s Unexperienced?
Looking for a chink in the democratic armor?
I am only one of 18 million people he has united, how many have McCain united? How many has Palin united?
I wonder if Sarah Palin could have done all of the community work on the south side of Chicago Barack did?
Do you really think she knows the constitution as well and a Barack who taught constitutional law?
The comparison is laughable and is such a stretch it’s not even measurable.
Don’t blame liberals, progressives, and Barack because your GOP party didn’t properly vet Sarah Palin.
That’s the whole point of this thread isn’t it? Not a Hawaiian Bill…
And its come to my attention Sarah Palin has been on committees to give Alaska sovereignty so they can profit by selling the US oil. hmmmmmmm
“Where Palin’s politics are strongest and
most popular in AK are her anti-federalist positions. She, like many Alaskans, believe in full state sovereignty. This is the most extreme of the states”
It kinda takes the wind out of your sails doesn’t it…
I have a good suspicion that Sarah Palin will be a Democratic gift that keeps giving for quite some time…

JanSParticipantNR… after research you are comfortable that he made the right decision? care to share that research?
And…for both Tonya and NR…as a person who posts on these forums, who would like to see a discussion based on opinion, shared facts, and not on personal traits…what the he*l do you have about JoB that you single her out and seem to be in bashing mode about her posts ? It’s more than obvious that it’s become personal for both of you, and it shows to the rest of us, even if you think you’re being impartial. Sometimes we are not what we seem until it’s pointed out. I know she doesn’t need to be defended on here…I’m not doing that. I’m just asking that you give the rest of the posters…and readers and lurkers…a break..OK?
(Sorry, TR, I just had to say it)
September 3, 2008 at 6:47 am #587948Topic: Going From Private to Public (Sealth)
in forum West Seattle SchoolsandasaiParticipantAfter 6-9th grade at an excellent private school on Capital Hill, we’ve made the switch back to public, and so our 10th grader is going to Sealth this year, and hoping to do the IB program in 11-12th grade. We’re excited to be back in the public schools (especially no tuition!), but am wondering what your opinions are about Sealth, academically, socially, as a community & the staff. Our 10th grader is nervous about starting Sealth, but that’s normal when starting any new school. Thanks!

AnonymousInactiveYou know what, BDG, I am offended that McCain chose Palin. I honestly feel that he made his decision based on her sex and I am insulted that he would think he could get more votes by doing this.
However, after research, I feel good about his decision. I feel that she is qualified and I like that she’s tough. I could do without the hard core religious angle, but, I guess it appeals to the more conservative base of the Republican Party.
Do you realize that Obama still has no clear plan for Iraq? My question would have to be to Democrats: Why Obama? What makes him experienced? And, remember, he’s running for the BIG job.

AnonymousInactiveCountingCoup – No apologies required.
I’m not sure what you are trying to do with your post. Are you insinuating that, unless I am of aboriginal Hawaiian decent, I should not have an opinion on that particular bill?
Are you simply sharing what issues are most important to you?
I have shared my views and important issues time and again on this forum. I ask about that particular bill because it was suggested that, since Obama passed bills in the Senate, that alone was considered proof of more experience than Palin.
I was curious if everyone knew exactly what bills he was passing and what bills he vows to pass once he is elected President.
Not too many people responded, and those who did, yourself included, have insinuated that the bill doesn’t affect them personally and, therefore, is of no concern to them.
The problem I have with this particular bill is that is enforces more diversion within America. I was under the impression that Obama was all about “change” and “unity”. I’m just looking at whether his record backs up what he says because, let’s face it, who really knows what his intentions are… he’s so vague.

JennyMemberI never heard of Sarah Palin until recently. But from what I know of her so far, I think she’d be a slam-dunk no-brainer choice for VP 4 years from now, and for President 8 years from now. It is possible that this is too early for her. However…
What an impressive lady she is! It’s obvious she entered politics to accomplish things, not to BE somebody. She hit the ground running, and has been kicking butt & taking names ever since.
What this tells me about McCain is that he’s serious about being a reformer. That this is one administration that really IS going to fight for fiscal sanity & clean government. (If he simply wanted to be able to fill out the “Female” checkbox, he could easily have picked Kay Bailey Hutchison.)
All Palin has to do tomorrow and in the coming weeks is show that she belongs in the major leagues: Tell her story (especially to stop the attempts by the left to “define her” as a dangerous wacko from a wacko family), and then concentrate on the issues she knows best, such as energy policy. She knows her stuff on energy, and she has a definite goal in mind on that.
As long as she shows the country that she was elected governor of Alaska for a perfectly good reason (that she’s a smart, professional, and goal-oriented executive, like any governor should be) she’ll win over all the open-minded women & men.
Oh – and if McCain croaks on the day after Inauguration, which he won’t, I’m sure she’ll pick a VP for their foreign policy experience. In which case she’ll be in exactly the same position that President Obama would be in.
September 3, 2008 at 5:16 am #636879mellaw6565MemberCMP- I agree with JoB – if you are going to pet sit and walk dogs, you have to be safe. Staring a dog down and putting yourself inbetween is not only dangerous, it could be deadly if the attacking dog is big enough.
That was the thought that was terrifying me, not the fact that you are a pet sitter.

they’ve taken to arresting reporters with credentials around their necks for trying to report the news…
one of whom was a reporter for a news organization with a heavily republican bias…
wrong place .. wrong time.. no respect for a reporter’s credentials… and lest you write this off as just twin cities police out of control.. an unidentified man wearing no credentials yanked the RNC press passes from the necks of at least two reporters in full view of their police escorts.
when asked who that was … they were told it was probably secret service.
is this what we pay our secret service for? this is a clear abuse of power…
It all has a good ending though. i suspect the lawsuits that come of this will give Democracy Now operating money for quite a while…
one of the reporters had to seek medical care after she was released.

September 3, 2008 at 2:16 am #636877CMPParticipantMy friends still trust me to dog sit so I guess that’s all that matters…hopefully they don’t read this blog and recognize me. Although their dog is well behaved and won’t come charging after anyone when he’s on a walk with me b/c he’s on a leash. What really worries me is that some of these dog owners you’re all complaining about probably have children that are equally awful which is a frightening thought. And I’m sure they don’t read this blog to realize their poor ownership skills annoy a lot of people in West Seattle. Rest assured, I will never own a dog for a number of reasons, but am always impressed to see the well-behaved dogs out there that kind of make up for all of the bad ones.

This afternoon, the director of Division of Elections in Alaska, Gail Fenumiai, told TPMmuckraker that Todd Palin registered in October 1995 to the Alaska Independence Party, a radical group that advocates for Alaskan secession from the United States.
Besides a short period of a few months in 2000 when he changed his registration to undeclared, Todd Palin remained a registered member of AIP until July 2002 when he registered again as an undeclared voter.
What’s so special about 2002? As Josh Marshall notes, it’s the first time Sarah Palin ever ran for statewide office.

You continually ignore Obama’s experience.
He has eight years in the Illinois State Senate and two years in the US Senate. This is five times the experience Palin has.
Furthermore, he has passed real bills. Bills that are going to fix real problems. One of my favorite laws that Obama passed was a measure to allow every American the ability to not only hear how their tax dollars get spent, but alsogo online and see how and where their tax dollars are spent. This law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, which brings me to my next point. Obama isn’t about division. He understands that the only way to get American going back in a positive direction. The right direction is not by calling Republicans names or by cornering himself on the far left either. This is why, if you took the time to discover who is really running for president and not just the party affiliation next to the candidates name, you would have learned that most of the bills proposed legislation by Obama is co-sponsored by Republicans. One of my favorite positive quotes about Obama and his “freshman” experience comes from state Sen. Kirk W. Dillard, a Republican who became a friend.:”When you come in, especially as a freshman, and work on something like ethics reform, it’s not necessarily a way to endear yourself to some of the veteran members of the Illinois General Assembly,”
What I also noticed when looking at his legislation is that he doesn’t always going to have his name next to the legislation that will make him look good on paper. The very legistlation that wont pass. Instead he stays real. He works with real people (Democrats and Republicans) who he knows cares enough about the policy or issue at hand, you know that person who isn’t just trying to look good on paper, to get the policy right and passed the first time.
This is leadership and this is only the beginning to what a great, classy, passionate, and well educated leader America is in store for come 2009.

RainyDay1235MemberI am predominantly a “Democrat” – but I would not characterize myself a liberal. What exactly does that mean anyway – a “bleeding heart” type?
People can say they are open-minded, but I’ll be honest and say that I TRY but am rarely successful. It seems when a person hits their thirties many ideals are set. Even if I agreed with McCain on a lot of things, it’s the BIG issues that hold me back from listening. I think many Republicans would have to feel the same….no?
In an ideal world a Moderate/Independant Party would be able to offer up a real candidate that had a fighting chance. I love the Democracy America affords us, but I still find it so black & white (no pun intended). And no, I don’t have a better solution….
As a “Democrat”, I would like to see the return Roosevelt’s CCC instead of Welfare, I think Affirmative Action is just as wrong as discrimination, I believe your right to burn the American flag is what makes it so great, I don’t think Sex Ed belongs in the public schools (any more than abstinance does), I’m pro-choice, Atheist and an active community volunteer. We don’t all fit into neat little boxes.

AnonymousInactiveJenV – One last thing…
I think the dems are huge hypocrites in how they handle Justice Thomas. They are all for affirmative action (in every sense), until it’s for a conservative for supreme court – then not so much. That’s the epitome of a hypocrite – you can’t just have affirmative action apply to “liberal” blacks.
Note Obama’s recent comments on Thomas.
Liberals espouse this need for tolerance, yet look how “tolerant” liberals are of conservative views. Most liberals are tolerant only as to their own beliefs. Isn’t that the antithesis of tolerance – to attack someone who doesn’t agree with your views?

You do realize that all that bitterness and hatred will give you an ulcer don’t you? Oh and wrinkles too! :)
Pot meet kettle ring a bell?
charlabob “The reason the right wing is defending Palin’s nomination (whatcha bet she doesn’t last that long?) is simple: “Democrats fall in love; Republicans fall in line.”
I’ll take that bet my dear and I’d double it if I could but that would just be double of nothing :)
You said it, Democrats fall in love, they don’t think, they feel. That is no way to run a country and it’s the very reason your party will lose this election. You didn’t vet Obama, the man is a lost cause with more skeletons in his closet that Lilly and Herman Munster. Every day something comes out about him and there is nothing your party can do about it but lie and deny.
Republicans don’t fall in line, and Palin is living proof of that. She went up against her own party the Republicans and knocked them out of the ball park. She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and she does not hide who she is.
I can’t say either of those things about your candidate.
