JJetsonMember* 2nd year WSE isn’t making federal standards
* Letters were sent on approx 8/15 notifying all parents. Form Requesting to transfer to another elementary school must be received no later that 8/22.
* School starts 9/3…letters with new assignment still not received.
Could somebody please tell me who and how to get in touch with the school committee person(s) that represent(s) WS? We just moved here in March & have three children in elementary school. And have been trying to negotiate this system since then.

WSBKeymasterDo you mean the school board member?
Steve Sundquist is West Seattle’s representative on the Seattle Public Schools board – his contact info is here:

pamMemberJust call the main school district number and ask them to direct you to someone who can tell you what school your child has been assigned to. You could call the schools in the area (Lafayette, Arbor Heights, Roxhill, Schimtz Park, Highland Park) to see if your child is enrolled there but call reasonably early as the offices will be extremely busy today as you can imagine. Secetaries should be answering the phones by 7:30.

JJetsonMemberThanks a lot…in Boston we called them school committee members…my bad! My situation has been rectified but I want to try to understand the system a little better and see what I can do to help. I’ve already contacted the staff at WSE and will be helping out once I get my kids settled. The school is a diamond in the rough but there is a lot of work to be done.

BonnieParticipantWhose fault is it that WS Elementary isn’t meeting the standards? The staff or parent involvement? Obviously you ARE involved but not all parents are involved in their child’s education. Parents need to stay involved to keep those scores up.

HPMemberMy kids are in an elementary here that is not meeting federal standards but my kids are . A major reason our school is not meeting the standards is we have a huge esl population, and very low parent involvement. But I have found that as long as I am involved my kids do well.

jMemberI am a teacher at a school that is not passing AYP (annual yearly progress). During our learning improvement meetings last week, our administrators stressed to us that everywhere in Washington is experiencing this. Parents are given the option to transfer if the school has not meet AYP for 2 years. The fact is, if it’s the first year a school hasn’t met AYP, you’d never know. The only time a parent would find out is if the school has failed two years in a row. So you could be transfering your child from a school that has failed two years, to a school that has already failed and will possibly fail again the next year. The state has a real problem on their hands because within the next few years, almost all schools will be failing. Should be interesting.
HP is right on with the reasons why a school fails this. In order for a school to pass AYP, they have to pass two years in a row. What a mess!!!

JJetsonMemberYes J & HP…thank you! As a parent I find it to be a very scary situation. I loved everything about WSE but my children became overwhelmed with some of the disciplinary problems that occurred. The lack of parent involvement was indeed a huge problem. How can you find out if a school has failed? Why isn’t it posted on the Seattle Public Schools website? To be perfectly frank I’m not only worried about my kids but also the kids who are being left behind.

BonnieParticipantI would just suggest working with the teacher to make sure they are doing what needs to be done and staying involved. The school my son was at the year before last didn’t have any parent involvement. The school he’s at has a lot. (well, a lot more…not sure about other schools)
I’d like to know if they are failing or not too. Intersting.

ebaerMemberI noticed this a bit late, but in the future, SPS has an automated line where you can find out where your child is enrolled or where they are on the wait list: 206-252-0212 You can also call the enrollment center at 252-0760.
As for WSE, it has only been in existence for 2 years, but is an amalgamation of 2 schools which were also struggling mightily with all the issues above. It is a much longer term issue than 2 years.

marcoParticipantReviving this topic, due to current WSE news.
I found this
http://www.k12.wa.us/BulletinsMemos/bulletins2009/B042-09.doc which has some details on what happens when schools are failing.
via http://www.k12.wa.us/ESEA/AdequateYearlyProgress.aspx (this also has the list of failing schools)
