andasaiParticipantAfter 6-9th grade at an excellent private school on Capital Hill, we’ve made the switch back to public, and so our 10th grader is going to Sealth this year, and hoping to do the IB program in 11-12th grade. We’re excited to be back in the public schools (especially no tuition!), but am wondering what your opinions are about Sealth, academically, socially, as a community & the staff. Our 10th grader is nervous about starting Sealth, but that’s normal when starting any new school. Thanks!

mom3MemberWe have one child attending this school, it is our second year there and we are very happy. We found that our child is participating in afterschool activities, has a good peer group and is doing well acedemically. The staff has been supportive and our child looks forward to school. For all intents and purposes for us “It’s all good.” Generally, that is the opinion of the peer parents that we have talked to.
There is only one downfall, and that is the facility that they are in now (Boren location and the transportation issues around the new location. (I think that is a subject of another thread!) I will say that I like this location MUCH better than the old Lincoln building that Garfield enjoyed before moving back to their remodeled building.

inactiveMemberThe International Baccalaureate program is very highly regarded, as you are probably aware. The IB students I have met are incredible young people!
Having the program at Chief Sealth is a wonderful opportunity for kids in the West Seattle neighborhood. I just wonder how many folks are even aware of it? The international group has a website page for the Diploma Program started at Sealth in April 2007. http://www.ibo.org/school/002912/
I’m not a Chief Sealth parent, but I have tutored up there a bit with a few IB students, but also with a bunch of other AWESOME young adults. I have been honored to work along aside of and be trained by some of the most loving and committed secondary administrators, teachers and support personnel I have ever met. Could ever hope to meet.
I love Chief Sealth. I believe in their ability to fulfill their mission for the students, the families and the West Seattle community. I encourage everyone who has any time or inclination to give the Chief Sealth office a call and see how you can plug in to their programs as a volunteer. You will be glad you did. And, I also have confidence that you will be glad that you’ve chosen Sealth for your children. I think the sky is the limit for Chief Sealth!

GenHillOneParticipantandasai, we’re in sort of the same boat (9th grader), so I can’t really add much except that so far, so good! I think there is a bit of homework shock at our house – westseattledood, you do math? ;) No, the building isn’t the best, but 9th, and new, students never knew otherwise so I think it’s a bigger deal for upperclasses. It’s “a lot better than all the stairs at Denny.” IB/honors opportunites were a big part of our decision to go there as well.
