This is the 1st year I’ve grown Mashua, and it’s thriving to no end. With the heat this summer, it’s literally growing 4-6 inches per day up wires strung around my carport columns and then across the wires strung between them. I wouldn’t consider it invasive, but I would say it needs a low to moderate support system and some care to keep it growing horizontally versus straight vertical.

All parts of the plant are edible. I’ve only eaten the leaves and stems at this point. Will dig the tubers this fall to sample, but in the meantime, it’s a gorgeous vine. Related to nastursiums without the aphid-issues, needs little to no water and just thrives. Leaves are peppery and assertive but not overwhelming. Little crunchy stems are the same. Haven’t tried cooking them yet, but I’m guessing they would do well with a quick stir-fry. I think I got 3+ tubers last year from Raintree Nursery (http://www.raintreenursery.com/Mashua-5-Tubers-SPRING-Ship.html), and we have enough leaves to pick a Mashua-salad every day (if we actually did).

Anyhow, the vining branches that I’ve let run a bit are rooting, and I keep cutting them back to not let them root further, which seems a shame, so if anyone would like to try growing it, you are welcome to contact me and dig up some rooting stems to try out. Guessing you’d need a greenhouse or warm spot indoors to get it through the winter, but I’m a newbie with this one, so not entirely sure. Since it was an expensive little bugger to start this year, I thought there might be some folks that would like an edible experiment.

I’m a little slow with email at times, but I’ll check in to see if anyone is interested in the upcoming days.

    Hello West Seattle Bloggers!

I moved here seven months ago from Colorado and absolutely love it here.

When I arrived I knew I’d be busy with my new job, so finding an excellent dog walker was number one on my” new to town to-do list.”

After several hours of research (websites), many consultations that felt forced (too focused on business, viewed as a price tag), ruling out doggy daycare and feeling overwhelmed by outrageous rates: I was ready to stoop to posting an on Craig’s List.

Rocket (my adorable Airedale Terrier) and I, were on walk exploring West Seattle one day when we happened upon a cafe that allowed me to take her in (how cool is that?)

The barista pointed me towards a glass jar full of gluten free treats (my dog is allergic), next to were a stack of cute white cards.

I decides to call Mathew of Idle Paws. after an easy minute conversation, I setup a meeting with him on Alki three hours later.

The first thing he did was engage with Rocket and she no problem warming up to him quickly. She has issues with males which was a concern, but he’s a dog charmer.

As we went on our free consultation walk, every canine was instantly drawn more towards meeting him than mine.

He showed me his method of meeting dogs and handling the leash, both have worked wonders.

Mat is very knowledgable about all kinds of breeds, behaviors, helpful hints and problem solving.

For the last six montages I’ve used him as a sitter and a walker.

    Why he’s the best:

    He’s cautious, uses good judgement.

    He’s very trust worthy.

His rates are beyond reasonable (between 15 and 20 for an hour.)

    He has great communication skills.

He’ll accommodate your schedule, not his (very flexible.)

He’s very positive and loves his job.

He’s always available for last minute requests.

    Rocket loves him

He does group walks (friendly dogs) and one on one walks, (aggressive dogs) as well as focusing on rescue dogs.

    I cant recommend him enough.

wake brought up a good point in a manner that perhaps caused those who were jumping up and down with joy at Monkton’s article published in one of those conservative websites to dismiss it…

Although he does have some background in statistics… Monckton has no background at all in science… and his understanding of the statistical models betrays that lack of context.

    can he manipulate numbers? yes?

does he understand what he is manipulating?

    that’s more than questionable.

it’s better when you cite experts to cite someone who is actually and expert in the field.

Ha! Monckton is as much of a trained scientist as I am. Real scientists beg to differ with his misrepresentations of their work. Which is a diplomatic way of saying he’s a fraud.

    http://www.skepticalscience.com/Monckton_Myths_blog.htm

To paraphrase Ghostbusters: “The purpose of science is to serve mankind. You seem to regard science as some kind of dodge… or hustle. Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable. You are a poor scientist, Mr. Monckton.”

I would posit that kayakers that have radios generally have gotten to to the point in their education and skills that they wouldn’t have found themselves in that position. That there is now a kayak rental at the Bell St Marina will only increase the potential for these sorts of incidents. Of course I’m speculating as I didn’t hear about this before now. I will say that the concept of experience equates expertise is inaccurate.

Hi aj, are you new to the threads, by chance? I only ask as this topic has been hashed out literally dozens of times over the years here. And, unfortunately, the short answer to your simple query seems to be…

    …with great difficulty.

Animal Control suggests we call them with as much information as we can gather about time/place/etc. There’s an online form you can post same. And you can always choose to attempt to educate an offender – mixed results will ensue.

Frankly, there really isn’t any consistent way to enforce the law. And to some, it’s not worth the effort others think it worthy of to even bother. Which should give you some idea of the level of intensity this topic engenders here on this neighborly blog we’re so lucky to have available to us.

Thanks for the generous offer, lbd, unfortunately I can’t make it. But if you care to post something, I’d be sure to read it. :-)

I do think that we’re only partially to blame for our often over-amped and frequently misplaced fear. All one has to do is watch or read any mass media for a short while and you’ll be inundated with a thousand reasons to not get out of bed on any given day.

How often do they tease us with leads fraught with anxiety before the commercial and the actual story is merely confusion or sometimes nothing at all? All day. Every day. Fear. Anxiety. And most of it directed at either your neighbors or people you’ll never come into contact with or situations so random that you couldn’t avoid it if you tried.

Be afraid! Be vigilant! Be concerned! Why? Hang on, we’ll cook something up. But for godsakes, WATCH US!

It’s probably easier to just be paranoid about everything now than to not be.

Ttt, I don’t know him, but I vaguely recall at some point in the past he was mentioned in a post and a family member (sister, maybe) gave some explanation. I cannot quite remember what was said and am not sure how to search to find that post. Maybe somebody else knows.

Dear Sumlov and others using small craft on Puget Sound, please check out the Coast Guard’s info before you go out on the water. The CG Recreational Boaters Manual can be found at http://www.uscg.mil/d13/psvts . Go to the section at the bottom “Important Manuals for the Mariner” and click on the RBM. It contains answers to many of the question you may have about how to operate a small vessel of any type on the sound. If you equip yourself with a marine band VHF-FM radio (optional-this can be a simple hand-held model) and monitor the Vessel Traffic Service’s (VTS aka “Seattle Traffic”) channel 14, you’ll have access to the commercial vessel traffic situation for your area. If you are in Possession Sound or north of Bush Point on Whidbey Island, the channel changes to 5A. Seattle Traffic controls commercial vessel traffic on the water from Olympia up to Cherry Point and the San Juans and all the way out to Cape Flattery. If you contact Seattle Traffic on the radio or by phone (206-217-6152) prior to entering or crossing the Traffic Separation Scheme, or TSS, they will let you know what you will encounter traffic-wise. This service is entirely free. The areas in and near Elliott Bay and just north and south of it can be extremely busy at times and checking traffic before setting out is as important as making sure you have a life preserver and no leaks in your vessel. Best of luck and safe boating!

Hello, this is URGENT. Our mixed breed dog Lilly just escaped from our new apartment near the corner of Delridge & Thistle. She’s hard of hearing, her eyesight isn’t great and she does not have a collar on! She is a very gentle, sweet dog who will go up and say hi to anyone. Please call me at 206-765-6117 if anyone sees her or can hold her and I will drive over immediately!

She has a blonde coat, somewhat short hair but white facial fur and she is a very pretty, unique looking dog. Medium sized, (smaller than a golden retriever but larger than a shitzu)

Many of the crossings in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea require crossings shipping lanes and established ferry lanes.

The currents around this area are marginal, topping out at less than a knot so I wouldn’t worry too much about currents. However the currents around the south and west sides of Blake island can be interesting with converging flows from Rich Passage, Colvos Passage and eddies from the East Passage. I’ve watched folks basicallynpaddle on a treadmill in that area.

For the shipping traffic I’ll usually contact Vessel TraffiC, USCG, on channel 16 and ask about traffic, or call on the phone. Sometimes they can be a bit suspicious but when I explain they supply the information I’ve requested.

Crossings are usually where people usually get in trouble so I always recommended when I was instructing that they critically examine their abilities before attempting crossings longer than 1 nm.

It will be interesting to see if you get a response, Skeeter … hope you do. Thanks for speaking up to the scofflaws and to the police. We all need to do the same, and at also to advocate for additional services to protect our quality of life in a rapidly growing city. (Not just park-related, but in all aspects, crime, transportation, environmental degradation, etc.) In this case, “services” could be additional dog parks, more police presence, more animal control, education for dog owners, greater park staff oversight or signage, programs to empower park-users, whatever is deemed most effective. It can’t be done on the current budget, but the new Metropolitan Parks District will have additional revenue sources, and we must make sure that they listen to these quality of life concerns.

    Yes, many times.

Ive launched crom many locations, but most often from Alki Point. Probably due to ease of loading and unloading kayaks.

Conditions vary with the weather but the shipping lane in the middle of the East Passage bear caution as ships come through there at speeds between 16 and 20 knots. Given that the minimum distance is something in the neighborhood of 3.75nm at the shortest, includes a 1.5nm wide shipping lane, other commercial marine traffic and is very exposed it should be viewed as a serious crossing and one should have the requisite skills. If your are asking these questions you should ask yourself if you’re truly ready.

Where you land is dependent on where your going, I guess, though Wingehaven, S a bit from the N ferry dock is a nice park and landing site maintained by the WWTA.

On a nice flat day it takes at least 1.5 hours each way. That is barring shipping traffic ( no, you do NOT have the right of wsy, in any way shape or form over other traffic, conteary to popular belief) an appropriate vessel and a well developed efficient and effective forward stroke.

I’ve never done it. However, I did paddle my inflatable kayak from Port Orchard (Southworth) to Blake Island. That might be a good practice run to consider. It’s quite a bit shorter.

The original poster had every reason to think/feel/say, what she did

I believe the OP had reason to be concerned, and cautious.

But, “Creep”, and “uber-creep”, are unreasonable, and should have been retracted in a subsequent post, after several points had been made that this Young Man is Autistic. Even before that fact was pointed out, I found the descriptions bothersome, and as such didn’t give the OP much credence. Reminded me a bit of some negative Yelp reviews, although nowhere near being as over the top as many of them are.

I’ve been wanting to comment on this, in more depth, but that will wait until I have a bit more time.

I would feel better about the OP, and would have much more respect for them, if they took up littlebrowndog on her kind offer.
