Topic: Protect Seniors from Scams
Seattle residents should urge the City Council to prohibit cryptocurrency kiosks, often called crypto ATMs. These machines resemble bank ATMs but operate with virtually no meaningful consumer protections. Of the more than 900 crypto kiosks licensed statewide by the Washington Department of Financial Institutions, 73 are located in Seattle. None are subject to limits on fees or transaction amounts, nor are operators required to provide refunds. These are protections other states have adopted to reduce scam-related harm. Yet, even where regulations exist, enforcement has proven difficult. Connecticut, for example, revoked licenses after operators failed to comply.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reports a continued sharp rise in complaints and losses tied to crypto kiosks. In 2025 alone, losses increased 58 percent, with older and vulnerable individuals disproportionately affected. Once cash is deposited and converted to cryptocurrency, recovery is nearly impossible.
Cities are stepping in where states have not. Spokane banned crypto kiosks last summer, and other cities across Washington state are now considering similar action. Meanwhile, Washington’s Legislature has failed twice to pass consumer protections, leaving local governments to act.
This is not about cryptocurrency itself, it’s about stopping a tool that is widely used to steal from vulnerable residents. Seattle should lead by banning crypto kiosks.Sorry I was late to the party, but I was so elated to hear that COS Elaine Ko had stepped down. This is not about bashing COS Elaine Ko, but she was not a stellar representative to all of D1. After many attempts trying to get assistance for our neighborhood, COS Elaine Ko tried to get a protective order because I was calling her and emailing her about issues in our neighborhood.
The courts rightfully so, granted a temporary protective order. Anyone who is being hurt or threatened should be protected as quickly as possible….But if you put down knowingly incorrect facts which you have to back peddle in court then you are not a good representative. You are an abuser of power. So I personally am glad to see she has stepped down, but unfortunately we still have a poor excuse for a CM. In court, Rob actually said in front of the judge and my neighbors that he would never help us because we were mean to his COS. Couldn’t make that up if I tried. Instead of being a leader, he dug in for the wrong reason. Didnt you hear the judge CM Rob? THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD!
I am not speaking about them personally as I do not know them. Based on my experience with them, I count my lucky stars and would not surround myself with persons who are so interested in the power and not the job.
I say this from the bottom of my heart COS Elaine Ko….good! Now I dont have to worry about you waving your fist in my face anymore. But to Elaine Ko, I do wish you a happy life and retirement. PLEASE STAY OUT OF POLITICS!
