i walk on beach drive along constellation park daily. there has been an increase in the number of off leash dogs running free on the beach. A number of the owners fail to pick up after their dogs also.

There are signs posted and laws regarding dogs on the beach and leash laws. I own 2 dogs and obey the law.

This is concerning as we head into seal pup season , as new residents move into the area and the preservation of marine life.

How can the laws be enforced?

Hi aj, are you new to the threads, by chance? I only ask as this topic has been hashed out literally dozens of times over the years here. And, unfortunately, the short answer to your simple query seems to be…

    …with great difficulty.

Animal Control suggests we call them with as much information as we can gather about time/place/etc. There’s an online form you can post same. And you can always choose to attempt to educate an offender – mixed results will ensue.

Frankly, there really isn’t any consistent way to enforce the law. And to some, it’s not worth the effort others think it worthy of to even bother. Which should give you some idea of the level of intensity this topic engenders here on this neighborly blog we’re so lucky to have available to us.

    :-)

speak up…tell people…maybe if they’re told enough times, they’ll take the hint. Animal Control has exactly how many people to actually respond in a timely fashion? Not a lot.

That people don’t care more about the sensitive ecological balance, esp. at a beach, speaks volumes about self-importance :(

The police are also authorized to enforce animal control laws. Perhaps some public pressure might encourage them to do so.

If there are particular beaches where you see dogs a lot it might be worth calling Seal Sitters as well. They’re volunteers and can’t enforce, but they can educate and they help keep people and dogs away from pups.

Maybe if we flood Animal Control at 206 386 7387 every time we see a violation, something will get done. SMC 18.12.080. A dog still may be illegal even if on a leash!

if the beach is in Seattle and is public

it is illegal for your dog to be on the beach

    period… a leash doesn’t change that

Yeah….and it just sucks that we can’t enjoy our four legged friends on the beach! Our beautiful city is surrounded by salt water and if you want to share the beach with your pup you have to drive 3 hours to the coast. Would be nice if there was at least 1 public beach set aside for humans and their canines.

Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island…there you go…and it’s not that far of a drive. But Seattle? ..Nope,nope, nope. People use our beaches, children a lot at times, and no one wants their child playing in sand where dogs pee..

There is a small beach/swimming area in the Magnusen Park Off Leash Dog park. It’s so fun to watch the dogs having a blast in the water – legally!
