Thanks for the tips! SDOT has placed signage at both ends of Fairmount Ravine – Fairmount and Harbor, and Fairmount and Forest – with the dates that Fairmount Avenue will be fully closed as part of the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project: Starting next Monday (July 8) and potentially continuing into late February. (When SDOT announced last week that work would start “as soon as” today, they told us they still didn’t have detour plans ready to announce but that “traffic control” wouldn’t be needed immediately.) The project will also include some lane closures and two full weekend closures of the bridge itself, but we checked after verifying the Fairmount signage tonight, and there’s no signage up top – on or near the bridge – yet. We’ll circle back with SDOT tomorrow.

One month after the Admiral Neighborhood Association got an update on the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project (WSB coverage here), SDOT has just announced that work will start as soon as Monday (July 1). The bridge over Fairmount Ravine is actually two bridges; they’ll have some closures during the project, but, as explained in the ANA meeting, the biggest impact will be under those bridges, with a months-long around-the-clock closure of Fairmount Avenue. Here’s the SDOT announcement:
As early as Monday, July 1, SDOT is set to begin seismic retrofits on the Admiral Way North and South Bridges. These essential improvements will enhance the bridges’ ability to withstand earthquakes. The construction is expected to last approximately 7-8 months, but schedules may change due to factors such as weather and availability of crews and materials.
To ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently, there will be lane closures on SW Admiral Way at the bridge throughout the construction period. Additionally, there will be full 24/7 closures of the bridge on two weekends, with specific dates to be determined. Fairmount Avenue beneath the bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, for the duration of the construction.
We understand these closures will impact those who regularly use the bridge and Fairmount Avenue, and we will strive to minimize these disruptions.
This update didn’t mention the specific detour plans for the closures, nor did last month’s briefing, so we’re following up about those.
ADDED FRIDAY: SDOT says they haven’t finalized those plans but that the work potentially starting Monday won’t require “traffic control.”

6:48 PM: Thanks for the tip. The low bridge is out of service right now. Gates won’t open, says a stuck bike rider.
7:06 PM: Gates still down. Watching the live camera, we’ve seen some westbound riders turn around and head back eastbound. Some westbound vehicles are still waiting. We’re trying to reach SDOT to ask if they have any ETA on repairs.
7:41 PM: SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson tells WSB, “The bridge is currently stuck due to a technical issue with the tail locking mechanism preventing us from opening or closing the bridge. A maintenance crew is currently en route to diagnose and fix the problem according to our standard response procedures.”

4:40 PM: SPD and SFD are on the scene of a crash at Harbor Avenue SW and Fairmount Avenue, and police are asking for traffic-control help. Officers have described it to dispatch as three cars, two of them parked, and a driver under investigation for possible DUI. No serious injuries reported.
5:05 PM: That driver has been taken into custody. Meantime, at least two cars are being towed, so the scene might clear before too much longer.

11:58 PM: Police investigating a pickup truck missing a wheel in the 1200 block of Alki Avenue SW discovered it was on fire. SFD is arriving and they’ve now told dispatch it’s “fully involved,” so they’re blocking traffic on Alki Avenue. The person in the pickup is reported to have gotten out. Police said the truck apparently lost its wheel in the 1900 block of Harbor Avenue.

8:34 PM: Thanks for the photo! Police and SDOT were just dispatched to this – a large tree limb falling on a car in the 4700 block of 40th SW, reportedly also blocking the road. No injuries reported.
9:52 PM: Just went through the area; crews are there now.

10:52 AM: Police are closing westbound SW Roxbury in the 28th SW vicinity and eastbound at 30th. They’ve been trying to stop a man who reportedly has been in multiple areas of West Seattle this morning swinging a shovel at people and signs. Officers have also told dispatch he appears to be armed with at least one knife. No injuries reported but avoid the area for a while.
11:09 AM: Our crew reports this is all centered around the service station on the south side of 30th/Roxbury right now (that’s the county side, but this all started in the city, so it’s SPD’s case). Officers are in a standoff with the man, who is by the propane area (right side of the photo above).
11:27 AM: The former Roxhill Elementary building, now home to several Seattle Public Schools programs, is in shelter-in-place, per police radio. (This is the last day of the school year, with one-hour early dismissal scheduled districtwide.)
11:33 AM: Officers just told dispatch that they’ve taken the man into custody. An ambulance that was standing by (for possible [corrected] “involuntary treatment”) is being sent in. An SFD engine too.
11:40 AM: Dispatch has been told that the school building can be told it’s OK to lift shelter-in-place, and that the other area containment will be broken down, which means SW Roxbury should reopen soon.
11:51 AM: Our crew reports the man has been loaded into the ambulance for transport. Meantime, Metro says its buses have resumed travel on Roxbury.

GRADUATION NIGHT & LAST DAYS OF SCHOOL
-Tonight is Graduation Night for both of our area’s Seattle Public Schools high schools – ceremonies are at Memorial Stadium downtown (401 5th Ave. N.) for Chief Sealth International High School (5 pm) and West Seattle High School (8 pm).
-By Friday – the last day of classes at Seattle Public Schools – everybody will be out for summer. For some, today (Tuesday) is the last day, including the Vashon and Highline districts.

5:16 PM: Seattle Fire and Police are on their way – including an SFD rescue response – to what’s reported as a two-vehicle crash at 30th/Trenton [map], with one vehicle “on its side.” Updates to come.

5:21 PM: Trenton is reported to be blocked both ways. One person, “stable,” was inside the sideways car, and firefighters are helping them get out.
5:32 PM: That driver was helped out via the hatch, and most of the responding units were dismissed. No serious injuries, so no one is going to the hospital; tow trucks are on the way and the scene likely will clear fairly quickly.
5:36 PM: Remaining SFD scenes are leaving the scene. Police were talking to drivers regarding the cause of the crash; apparently one vehicle was traveling on 30th, the other on Trenton.
6:14 PM: Police just told dispatch that 30th/Trenton is now clear.

1:21 AM: Police say Alki Avenue is blocked both ways in the 1200 block [map] because of the response for a three-vehicle crash. No major injuries reported but SFD is there to treat at least one person.

2:08 AM: Police just told dispatch that they are reopening the street. We’ll be following up with SFD regarding injuries.
ADDED TUESDAY: Seattle Police provided this summary today:
At 0059 hours, an officer was doing a directed patrol on Alki Ave SW. The officer witnessed a vehicle with no lights on doing donuts and then quickly accelerated and drove down Alki Ave SW. The vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed and struck two unoccupied vehicles. The officer drove to the area of the collision and saw the damaged vehicles in the 1200 BLK of Alki Ave SW. The occupants of unit #1 were outside the vehicle and one male fled the scene on foot. Three juveniles were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One of the injured females was pregnant. The street was shut down for almost an hour.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR MANY
Today is the last day of school for many local parochial and independent schools, and it’s generally a short day. (A few schools are already out, including Explorer West Middle School [WSB sponsor] and Summit Atlas.) The last day of classes at Seattle Public Schools isn’t until next Friday.
WEEKEND EVENTS
Saturday: No major street closures for the Morgan Junction Community Festival, but the area around California/Fauntleroy will be busier.
Sunday: West Seattle Junction FC is home, 2 pm at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), vs. Tacoma.
