-Checking fire extinguishers.
-Testing data switches.
-Replacing coaxial cable connections.
-Troubleshooting dampers.
-Fixing lights.

ROAD-WORK ALERT: Work planned near million-gallon overflow-tank project site in southeast West Seattle

Announced today by the King County Wastewater Treatment Division, as their million-gallon sewer-overflow tank project continues taking shape:

Utility investigation work near First Avenue South bridge beginning December 2

King County Wastewater Treatment Division is planning to build a wastewater and stormwater storage tank near the First Avenue South Bridge to reduce combined sewer overflows into the Duwamish River, with construction expected to begin in summer 2025. Starting as early as (next Monday) December 2, 2024, crews will spend up to three days potholing, or digging small holes, near the future storage tank site in preparation for upcoming construction. This work will help King County to better understand the locations and condition of existing utility lines.

What you can expect

-Work hours 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for up to three days, starting as early as Monday, December 2. Work on Highland Park Way SW may happen at night to avoid disrupting traffic.
-Temporary lane closures with flaggers on site to assist vehicle and pedestrian movement.
-One drill rig and up to four service vehicles on site.
-Noise and slight vibrations during work hours, including engine noise and periodic hammering.
-Occasional truck traffic accessing the site during work hours.

Please watch for equipment and signs in the area, travel slowly to stay safe and follow direction from flaggers.

The overflow tank has been in planning for years – here’s some of our past coverage.

UPDATE: Water break in Admiral

1:32 PM: Thanks for the tip. Another big incident being dispatched right now – a water-main break reported in the Admiral District, on California near College. Water’s reported to be coming up from the covers on both sides of the road. We’re on the way to check it out.

1:48 PM: Still on the way but hearing emergency responders say that while the water’s shut off, there are two big holes “in front of the Admiral Theater” that will have to be filled.

(WSB photo)

2 PM: Here now, adding photo. It’s really mainly the one hole you see in our photo. A Seattle Public Utilities crew member told us they got here fast to shut off the break but likely won’t be able to fill the hole until tomorrow – both sides of the street are lined with parked cars that will have to get out of the way. (That’s why you’ll see “no parking” signs in the area.) If you’re anywhere nearby, remember that sometimes service disturbances like this lead to discolored water. No traffic effects right now except that an SPU truck is parked in the center lane.

POWER, WEATHER, SCHOOLS, TRAFFIC: Wednesday morning updates

6:01 AM: It’s Wednesday, November 20, and thousands remain out of power after last night’s windstorm (here’s our Tuesday night coverage).

POWER UPDATES (updated 9:10 am)

The major north West Seattle outage has been resolved as of less than an hour ago – from Admiral to Alki and beyond – and the major east West Seattle outage (Riverview south to the city limit and beyond) has been reduced.

City Light‘s outage map, after glitches last night, appears to be functioning in real time again. (Please let us know via comments or text – 206-293-6302 – if you get your power back, as SCL does not keep a public-facing record of that; the utility says it’s brought back tens of thousands around its service area.) Remember that if you encounter a traffic signal that’s dark or flashing, it’s an all-way stop. (16th/Holden is among them) … Some power-out areas in north WS are NOT showing on the map, we’re told, such as 51st/Orleans. … 9:10 am, texter says they just got power back in Highland Park/Riverview … 10:20 am, commenters say power in the Westwood area is back.

WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES

Cloudy with showers, breezy but not windy, high in the low 50s. Today’s sunrise will be at 7:23 am, while sunset will be at 4:27 pm.

SCHOOLS (updated 6:46 am)

-Sanislo Elementary closed (district says that’s the only WS school it’s closing today)

-No school at Community School of West Seattle today, per text

-YMCA Early Learning in Westwood is closed per commenter

-Highline Public Schools closed

-Any others? Let us know!

UPDATE: Crash(es) on westbound West Seattle Bridge

(Photo from commenter)

10:42 AM: Emergency responders are headed toward what might be two separate crashes toward the end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge – one pickup truck reported to have hit a pole, another reported to have hit the median. If you’re headed this way, you might consider an alternate route, or exiting the bridge before you get to the last stretch.

10:45 AM: No injuries reported so far. But this may affect eastbound traffic too, which will have to be blocked off to reset the median barrier – an SDOT crew is being summoned for that.

11:18 AM: Currently “one lane blocked eastbound and one blocked westbound,” police have told dispatch. And eastbound will be fully closed eastbound shortly for the barrier reset.

11:40 AM: Fully open again both ways.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Avoid east Admiral Way hill

Thanks for the tips and photo. A car wound up on the Admiral/Olga embankment a few hours ago and police are blocking bridge-bound traffic on the curve as they work to get it unstuck. So far as we can tell from the logs, no one was hurt in the original incident.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER, ROAD WORK: Wednesday watch (with morning incidents)

8:55 AM: Jay texted to say the Delridge onramp to the bridge is suffering from its “standard flooding” and there’s a backup on Delridge as a result.

8:14 AM: Three-vehicle collision at 2nd/Olson, blocking northbound on Olson per dispatch.

6:48 AM: If you’re using West Marginal Way, a caller tells us her vehicle is broken down, with flashers on, on the southbound side in the 4700 block (near the Duwamish Longhouse), and she wants people to take care going past while she awaits a tow.

Earlier:

6:03 AM: Good morning! Welcome to Wednesday, November 13.
