10:43 AM: Another traffic alert of sorts – a project under way by Highland Park Elementary. Thanks to Sam Drucker for the photos and report:

After a couple of years of planning, and in collaboration with Children’s Hospital, the Duwamish, and a local artist (and HPE alumnus), we are spending this morning painting the intersection by the entrance to our new playground.

The project is meant to help slow traffic around the school, honor and recognize and thank the tribe whose land our school and community reside on, and provide another opportunity to get people together to build relationships.

Thanks to the texter who points out that if you are headed eastbound on the bridge and need a detour because the ramp to NB I-5 is closed, you need to know about a crash on Beacon Hill. It’s at Spokane/Columbian and the texter says it’s a jackknifed tanker. Until there’s word it’s cleared, you’ll want to use 1st or 4th to get off the bridge instead.

BIZNOTE: Seattle Yarn finds new owners, will remain open

Seattle Yarn has found the new owners it needed to keep its doors open.

As we reported in May, store proprietor Ruth Bowen wanted to sell the business by August so she could pursue other interests.

Enter new owners-to-be Cheryl Lea and Destiny Itano, who will soon assume ownership of Seattle Yarn, assuring that the shop which has served local knitters for more than two decades will continue.

FOLLOWUP: Old warehouse demolished at future self-storage site on Harbor Avenue

More than three years after first word of a self-storage facility to replace a century-old warehouse at 3310 Harbor Avenue SW, the building has been demolished. We noticed the pile of debris when passing through tonight for another check on SPF30 preps a few miles west. We first reported on the plan in March 2015; West Coast Self-Storage obtained a street vacation for part of the site, which includes the former tow yard north of the ex-warehouse.

SPF30 tomorrow! More updates, from street-closure times to SOL ice cream

The setup continues at Alki Beach, where as many as 30,000 people are expected tomorrow afternoon/evening for the SPF30 mega-music festival in honor of Sub Pop Records‘ 30th anniversary. Interspersed with our photos (the first four are from early Thursday evening – breaking news got in the way of us publishing them sooner) are updates and followups:

ROAD CLOSURES/TRANSPORTATION/TRANSIT UPDATES AND ANSWERS: On Tuesday, we published the map and plan for road closures, transit, parking, and other issues related to getting there and back – if you’re going and you haven’t seen it yet, please check it out. Some readers had questions that we took to SPD Lt. Tom Yoon of the Traffic Unit, which is managing the closures and restrictions:

*Hard closures will begins at 6 A.M. on Alki Ave SW between 57th and 63rd. Absolutely no vehicles will be allowed in this area. This includes residences or business employees. This area will be for crowds to enjoy the concert.

*Soft closures (local access only) will begin at 9 A.M. This will be from California Ave SW / Harbor Ave SW and along Admiral Way (north bound access) to 63rd Ave / Admiral Way.

*Local access is for verified residents and their guests. Make sure the guests know who and the address of the residents.

The closures were also mentioned on a postcard sent to area residents, one of whom sent us this image.

FOOD TRUCKS/VENDORS/NONPROFITS: We’ve updated the list we published Thursday – see it here.

HUSKY DELI ‘SOL’ ICE CREAM: As mentioned here earlier in the week, Husky Deli and C & P Coffee (WSB sponsor) will be vendors by the Punky stage (kid music, Whale Tail Park/Alki Playfield). At the Husky Deli booth, a special flavor will support the “Save Our Lots” Junction parking fundraiser: “A luscious blend of rich chocolate with nuggets of exciting and surprising cookie dough.”

JUNCTION AFTERPARTY: SPF30 ends at 10. But there’s still lots of Saturday night left. West Seattle Junction venues invite you to “afterparty” with them. Sub Pop’s shuttles will continue running that way until midnight, notes Lora Swift of the West Seattle Junction Association, so that’s a good safe start for getting there. Anything more special than usual? That’s up to bars/restaurants to decide, but Lora does point out that West 5 (4539 California SW; WSB sponsor) will have a DJ!

FOLLOWUP: Spilled-fuel cleanup continues long after West Seattle tanker crash

More than a week after a Coleman Oil tanker truck spilled thousands of gallons of gasoline at the West Marginal/Chelan/Spokane/Delridge intersection, a cleanup crew was still on scene when we went through the intersection Thursday afternoon. We’ve since obtained more followup information from Seattle Public Utilities:

The responsible party hired an environmental consultant and cleanup contractor. SPU monitors and advises on their activities. SPU’s goal is to ensure that pollution in the stormwater system doesn’t leave and is cleaned out.

The Oil and Water Separator (OWS) is still operating. There is also a large pneumatic plug in the stormwater pipe downstream from the spill. The plug blocks polluted flows from heading downstream and into the Duwamish. The contractor will also be pressure washing our pipes between the spill and the plug.

Most of the spilled fuel went into the oil water separator (OWS). The contractor has pumped out both the OWS and the pipes behind the plug. Collected materials have either been recycled or are being processed as hazardous waste. Early numbers indicate that we’ve recovered over 2000 gallons of gasoline, but we won’t know the final amount until the responsible party reports and Department of Ecology verifies.

Ecology and SPU have monitored related outfalls along the Duwamish and have seen sheen. Department of Ecology has taken samples to determine the environmental impacts.

We will bill the responsible party for our time and materials, and we will investigate the incident under Seattle Municipal Code 22.800.

We’ll continue checking back, with the Department of Ecology too.

No one was hurt when one of the truck’s tanks went sideways the night of Wednesday, August 1st, with an early police assessment noting it happened during a “sharp right turn.” The incident kept the intersection closed – with West Seattle “low bridge” access blocked – for almost 12 hours.

PM REPORT UPDATE: Harbor Avenue standoff over, suspect in custody

NOON: Since the 6 am hour, we’ve been covering a standoff that’s led police to close off much of Harbor Avenue SW, between the bridge and California Way. A man broke into one of the vacant buildings at the old Sea-Way site around 3 am. He has refused to surrender. For a while he was inside; you cannot clearly see him in the reader photo above, but for some time he has been outside one building’s window, on an awning/ledge section. The SWAT team and negotiators have been on site for hours trying to talk him into giving up; he’s reported to be wielding a foot-long piece of broken glass as well as a screwdriver. Harbor remains closed at the bridge and at California Way. Some bicyclists have reported that the path was closed as well as the road. Our photographer, who went to the scene for a while early this morning, is back there now so we’ll have updates from him as well as via scanner.

12:23 PM: Our crew reports this is coming to an end. The man apparently tried to bolt, and was taken into custody.

12:28 PM: Southwest Precinct commander Capt. Pierre Davis tells us at the scene that they’ll get Harbor Avenue reopened as fast as they can – hopefully within 15 minutes or so.

12:49 PM: Per scanner, reopening now. We will update with more photos and followup info a bit later.

2:20 PM: Two more photos added above, including the man as he came down from the ledge. It wasn’t clear from radio communication at the time whether he was being taken to Harborview for evaluation or directly to jail; SPD media relations says the former.

7:15 AM: No incidents reported so far in/from West Seattle, but take note of the White Center/North Burien power outage if you’re headed that way.

TRANSIT ALERT: The 6:44 am Route 37 didn’t run today, per Metro.

STADIUM ZONE TONIGHT: Second Pearl Jam #TheHomeShows concert, 7:30 pm at Safeco Field.

I-5 LANE/RAMP CLOSURES THIS WEEKEND: Tonight until Monday morning, here’s what’s planned for northbound I-5. The eastbound West Seattle Bridge ramp to NB I-5 will be closed and you will see the 4th Avenue exit signed as a detour, WSDOT points out.

SPF30: Saturday’s big free music festival, noon-10 pm, will include road closures, detailed here with other transit/transportation notes. We’ll have at least one more preview on WSB today, and as part of it are pursuing answers to some questions from readers regarding that plan.

7:23 AM: Though we haven’t heard of a road closure, we’d advise avoiding southbound Harbor Avenue SW in the vicinity of this standoff, as more emergency resources are being sent that way.

7:35 AM: Now they’re blocking traffic both ways in that area – both north/westbound on Harbor at the bridge, and south/eastbound before you get to the scene.

7:48 AM: Scanner: “Pedestrian on eastbound West Seattle Bridge from Fauntleroy … walking against traffic along the median.” Police are being dispatched.

8:41 AM: Updates – White Center power outage is over. Harbor Avenue standoff is not – street’s still closed (bicycle/pedestrian path too, notes a commenter) and the Water Taxi shuttle is rerouted.

7:01 AM: Thanks for the tips. Yet another big power outage in the area – this time, 4,000-plus customers in White Center/North Burien. No word yet on the cause. But if you’re heading that way this morning, you should be aware. P.S. As far as we can tell, no overlap with the areas affected by the two big West Seattle outages in the past week and a half.

8:27 AM: The map shows it’s over.

8:32 AM: City Light says this outage was caused by a tree branch falling into a power line.

Morning report: Harbor Avenue standoff; street and path closed

6:38 AM: Thanks for the text. We just went back to Harbor Avenue to check out a different police-incident report. This is near but unrelated to the earlier call. A man broke into a nearby building and so far is refusing to come out.

7:24 AM: Additional emergency responders are being sent to the scene, per scanner, including SWAT, as well as SFD medics. If you can’t tell from our photo, it’s the former Sea-Way Marine site in the 2400 block of Harbor SW.

7:42 AM: Traffic is being blocked off on Harbor in both directions – north/westbound at Spokane, south/eastbound at California, per the scanner – until this is resolved.

9:26 AM: Not resolved yet. Thanks to the texter who sent the photo above. The suspect has been reported to have wielded various items threateningly, including broken glass and a screwdriver. Police continue trying to talk him into surrendering.

9:56 AM: As discussed in comments, the traffic closure is ALL traffic – bike/pedestrian path as well as both directions of the road.

11:26 AM: No change. Police are still trying to talk the man into surrendering. Since this has dragged on so long, we’re launching a second report shortly.

‘Scenes of violence’ response on Harbor Ave, quickly canceled

12:39 AM: Now there’s another “scenes of violence” callout, this time in the 2800 block of Harbor SW. Details to come.

12:45 AM: The call has closed.

ADDED: As noted in comments, this may be related to the later Harbor Avenue standoff after all. We hope to be able to check on that with police after the standoff is over.

UPDATE: Deadly shooting at High Point bus stop, West Seattle’s fifth 2018 homicide

11:23 PM: Thanks for the tips. There’s a “scenes of violence” response at 35th and Morgan. Some texters report having heard gunfire. More details soon.

11:29 PM: Per scanner, a victim is being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

11:40 PM: Also per scanner, the victim is a 20-year-old with two gunshot wounds. A gun has been found nearby. Our crew has just arrived and we are adding a photo from the west side of the intersection.

11:55 PM: No arrest reported so far. Since a bus/bus stop is involved, county officers are there along with SPD. Also, our crew says the intersection of 35th/Morgan is closed off.

1:42 AM: Police at the scene refused to comment and pointed us to media relations, but they aren’t commenting yet. So our crew finally left. Homicide detectives were among the police at the scene, though we’ll note that doesn’t necessarily indicate anything about the victim’s fate – they respond to some non-fatal incidents too.

Meantime, we just heard via the scanner that most of the intersection (except for the scene on the northwest side) is reopening.

8:07 AM UPDATE: Just talked to Det. Mark Jamieson of the SPD media-relations team. The victim, now described as a 37-year-old man, died at the hospital. No arrest yet. He says they believe the victim and the killer got into an argument on a bus, got off at the westbound Morgan stop (shown in our photos), it escalated, and that’s when the killer shot the victim. No description of the killer. They are asking anyone with information to call the tipline at 206-233-5000.

9:09 AM: This is also now on SPD Blotter. Meantime, we need to also note that it’s the fifth West Seattle homicide of the year – all in the past three months – after the deadly shooting of Micaiah Kotthoff in the east Highland Park area in July, the stabbing deaths of Michael Abay in South Delridge in July and Jonathan Pecina near Luna/Anchor Park in June, and the shooting death of Lorenzo Marr in May at West Seattle Stadium. No arrests reported in any of these cases so far.

‘Sound Spots’: New music-history exhibit opens at Log House Museum

Long before SPF30 … remember the Seattle Music Fest at Alki? That poster is part of a new music-history exhibit that opened today at the Log House Museum, just before music fans swarm the beach for Saturday’s big event.

The display case above includes Nirvana memorabilia on loan from local entrepreneur John Bennett, including a smiley face drawn by Kurt Cobain. An interactive component of the exhibit will take you back decades further:

You’re looking at the house that was once home to Ivar Haglund – whose music you can choose to hear; Woody Guthrie, too. (Ivar’s bio explains the link.) Lots of other memorabilia to browse, too:

The museum (61st SW/SW Stevens) is open noon-4 pm Thursdays-Sundays, and yes, it’ll be open on Saturday during SPF30, too.

The third vote count of the primary election is out, and in the 34th District State Senate race, Joe Nguyen‘s lead over Shannon Braddock has widened in a big way – now more than 1,400 votes. The vote counts won’t be final until August 21st; here’s how the full 11-candidate field stands:

6:54 PM: Even on another 90-degree evening, it’s perfect here in the warm shade on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center, during the fourth of this year’s six Summer Concerts at Hiawatha. Onstage tonight: General Mojo’s, whose lead singer Heather Thomas told the crowd a few minutes ago that she’s a West Seattle resident too. She and her bandmates “like to have fun,” she added. Right down to her shoes!

(And band co-leader Dune Butler is wearing a cape.) The concert series is presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association with co-sponsors including WSB; tonight’s show (free!) should run until about 8 pm so you have time to get here (Walnut south of Lander) if you’re not here already.

P.S. They’re offering free stickers! (Also selling merch including CDs.) More pics later.

Be part of shaping your nearest Microcommunity Policing Plan, while sharing your feedback about neighborhood crime, safety, and policing. You can do that by participating in one of the focus groups that will be conducted by Seattle University – SPD won’t be present, but will get the eventual findings. Here’s what’s coming up this month in West Seattle:
