NO STRIKE? Seattle Public Schools and its teachers reach tentative agreement; school starts Wednesday

9:52 PM: Just in via text from the Seattle Public Schools teachers’ union: Tentative contract agreement reached, so school is ON for Wednesday. They’ll vote the following Saturday. More to come.

10:06 PM: And confirmation from the district, via its website – though no details yet from either side.

ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: The union says that it won’t release details until after its board reviews the tentative agreement on Tuesday.

ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT: The union shared a few details with members in an e-mail (shared with us anonymously by a recipient) sent tonight, including:

… We are pleased to announce that our bargaining team reached a tentative agreement on a one year contract last night with Seattle Public Schools that includes a 10.5% increase in pay for all educators – certificated, paraprofessionals, and office professionals (SAEOPs) as well as substitutes. Among many other highlights of the contract, staff will now be eligible for five days of paid parental leave.

Our team is working right now to prepare documents and summaries for review by the SEA Board of Directors on Tuesday evening, after which they will be released to all members. …

SPORTS: Chief Sealth IHS hosts Kennedy Catholic HS in football-season opener

9:50 PM: Final score minutes ago at Southwest Athletic Complex – 72-20, Kennedy Catholic High School over Chief Sealth International High School in the football season’s opener.

ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: For the Seahawks, #8, senior Dontae McMillan, was the brightest spot of the game:

He scored all three of Sealth’s touchdowns. For the Lancers, 10 of their 11 touchdowns were on passes by #7, sophomore Sam Huard. The Seattle Times reports that tied the state record. 9 were in the first half.

The second half was delayed by what in effect was an extended halftime, starting when a Kennedy player went down with seconds left in the first half. The stadium remained in a concerned hush while the player was tended to by not only team staff but also Seattle Fire Engine 37 medics but eventually was able to get back up and walk off the field.

The Seahawks had the early lead after scoring the game’s first TD and point-after kick, until the Lancers’ second TD and two-point conversion midway through the first quarter. Halftime score was 59-13.

Next week, Chief Sealth – led again this year by head coach Ted Rodriguez – plays on Saturday night (September 8th) at SWAC, vs. Black Hills (from Tumwater).

Summer’s not over yet – and the benefit barbecues continue tomorrow (Saturday) at West Seattle Thriftway (4201 SW Morgan; WSB sponsor). Tomorrow, it’s educational as well as tasty – here’s the announcement from beneficiary and spotlight nonprofit ShelterBox USA:

Saturday from 11:00 AM until 2 PM, Thriftway will be conducting a barbecue fundraiser for ShelterBox USA.

There are disasters around the world we never hear about; there is a special group of volunteer aid workers that drop their jobs and go there to provide Shelter, Warmth & Dignity.

ShelterBox is an international aid organization that is volunteer-led and often arrives on the ground at the scene of a disaster within 48-72 hours.

One of our own West Seattle residents, Dave Nichols, has spent the last 6 years responding to those disasters; to date he has deployed to 6 disasters, from The Philippines to Madagascar, working as part of a two-person team bringing shelter to those affected by disaster or conflict displacement. Dave is one of a small highly trained group of ShelterBox Volunteer Response Team (SRT) members (there are currently about 156 worldwide).

Dave will be on hand to answer questions at Thriftway from 11-2; stop by and say hi.

Since 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 200 disasters in over 85 countries. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each iconic green ShelterBox contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, stove, blankets and water filtration system, among other tools for survival.

Celebration of life September 9th for Shirley M. Morrison, 1923-2018

Family and friends will gather September 9th to celebrate the life of Shirley M. Morrison. Here’s the remembrance they are sharing with the community:

Shirley Mary Morrison 4/25/1923 – 7/26/2018

On July 26th, 2018, God gained the sweetest angel, preceded in death by the love of her life, Donald W. Morrison. Shirley graduated from WSHS in 1941, married Don in 1944, and together they had 3 children: Mary (Mike), Patricia (Scott), and Michael (Colleen). Mom, grandma, aunt, Nana, was the true matriarch of the family and loved to spend time with her 3 grandchildren: Kimberly (Dino), Aaron (Julie), and Paige, as well as her 3 great-grandchildren: Kirk, Addison, and Vanden.

After retiring from over 30 years of service with Sears and Roebuck Co. in 1989, Shirley was able to dedicate more time toward her passion for health and fitness. A true inspiration to all who knew her… she would spend most of her days walking the beach of Alki near her home, pumping iron at Harold’s Health Club, and preparing delicious, healthy meals for her family and friends.

Shirley had a smile that could light up any room. Not only was she beautiful, loving, and patient, but she had the best sense of humor! You could spend hours laughing, telling jokes, and talking with her about years gone by. She influenced so many lives with her kind and giving spirit. We will think of her living in the hearts she touched, because she was loved so much.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held Sunday, September 9th, at the Chelan Cafe in West Seattle from 3-6 PM. Please come help us celebrate Shirley’s beautiful life! Please share memories of Shirley on her guestbook at EmmickFunerals.com

UPDATE: Rose Filer swims from Bremerton to Alki Point

3:09 PM: After about four and a half hours of swimming – starting at about 10:30 this morning off Bremerton – 25-year-old West Seattleite Rose Filer is getting close to Alki Point. She’s on what the Northwest Open Water Swimming Association calls the Amy Hiland Swim, named for the first person to complete it. It’s only been completed by a handful in the half-century-plus since, and Rose is the latest (backstory here). You can see live tracking here; we’re off to Alki Point to see if we can catch up with her at the finish.

ANOTHER PROJECT SETS ‘EARLY OUTREACH’ MEETING: As noted here previously, the city has a new phase of Design Review for some projects – “early outreach.” Some developers/builders are required to give the community a chance to comment even before the formal DR process begins. The second West Seattle project in this process (here’s the first) is 5616 California SW, eight townhouses planned for the site next to C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor). The “early outreach” meeting, open to anyone interested, is planned for 4 pm Monday, September 17th, at High Point Library (3411 SW Raymond).

HOUSE MOVE: More than seven months after a house was moved (WSB coverage here) from the future development site at 1250 Alki SW (currently proposed for ~40 condominiums), a permit is being sought to move another one.

That’s the house at 1254 Alki SW, subject of the permit application. We had noted at the time of the other house’s move that it was up for sale too; the page for it on the website of “house rescue” company Nickel Bros confirms it’s been sold.

’15 years of friendship, and still going strong’: Kol HaNeshamah signs another lease to share space with Alki UCC

A partnership between a West Seattle synagogue and church will continue. Kol HaNeshamah has signed a new lease to continue being co-housed with Alki UCC at 6115 SW Hinds. In our photo above, from left, are Alki UCC board chair Rod Peeler, KHN’s president Jake Fawcett and executive director Sheila Abrahams, and Alki UCC business manager Kristin Michael. Their announcement:

Principals of Kol HaNeshamah and Alki UCC signed another lease agreement on August 29, 2018 for Kol HaNeshamah to rent space in the Alki UCC premises at 6115 SW Hinds St. These two organizations, a Congregational United Church of Christ and a Reform Synagogue Community, have been happily co-existing for 15 years. The core beliefs of these organizations are comparable while their missions and religious identities are different. This friendship and co-habitation have resulted in many joint events such as barbecues, luncheons, education, life-cycle celebrations, and meetings.

Said Rod Peeler, Chair of the Alki Board of Directors, after the lease signing: “We are proud of our 15-year relationship with Kol HaNeshamah synagogue. As we are in a transitional phase with our pastor’s retirement, this is a time for discernment of our place and purpose in the Alki community. We believe that providing a house of worship for both our Christian and Jewish communities supports our service to God’s will and we are grateful for our shared relationship and common bond.”

And Jake Fawcett, President of Kol HaNeshamah, commented: “Our relationship with Alki UCC goes far beyond sharing building space. Our shared values brought us together from the very beginning, when Kol HaNeshamah was founded in 2003. Both our congregations care deeply about standing up for justice and serving people in our communities who are most vulnerable. Alki UCC walks that talk. We’re looking back now at 15 years of friendship, and still going strong.”

Kol HaNeshamah holds Shabbat services twice a month and celebrates the Jewish holidays throughout the year. Education classes for students (Hebrew and Religious education) are held regularly September through June; and Adult education is offered throughout the year. KHN welcomes guests to its High Holy Services or at any other time.

Just one week until the next Mountain Fest at Camp Long! Here’s the reminder from Seattle Parks:

Join Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Camp Long for Camp Long Mountain Fest, a celebration of Seattle’s vibrant outdoor community and Camp Long’s place in mountaineering history. This free, family-friendly event will take place at the Camp Long Environmental Learning Center (5200 35th Ave. SW) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

All participants of Mountain Fest will enjoy a day of free access to rock climbing, rappelling, mountain-themed games and activities, and opportunities for nature-based learning. Event participants can develop outdoor living skills and experience an array of programs offered by Camp Long and other local organizations.

Mountain Fest activities will be made accessible to all people, regardless of their experience level, allowing beginners, intermediate, and advanced climbers and adventurers of all ages to enjoy the event*.

The goal of Mountain Fest is to continue the tradition started by Judge William G. Long and Clark Schurman, two of the founders of Camp Long, of providing access to outdoor recreation and education to all people, particularly underserved youth.

10:24 PM: Thanks to Skip Tognetti for the video via Twitter – it confirms what tipster Kevin told us about this evening, a Water Taxi crew rescue just off Seacrest:

It appeared at about 6:05 pm a person fell out of a small Lund motorboat. Water Taxi pulled person out of water.

For all the times we’ve seen false-alarm “water rescue” callouts, there was no callout for this one, so we were unable to confirm at the time, but the video tells the tale.

GUARDIAN ONE: Thanks to those who messaged us a few minutes ago that the law-enforcement helicopter was in the Westwood area; it wasn’t showing on flight tracker so we didn’t know until then. We checked in with them on Twitter and the reply: “Assisted Seattle PD with taking a felony suspect into custody near Westwood Village.”

STOLEN CAR: Alex e-mailed this report a short time ago: “My car was stolen outside of Southwest Youth and Family Services, at 25th SW and SW Alaska St. Blue Ford Taurus, 2005, WA license plate AVD0257. There is a Rover.com magnet on the back that may have been peeled off.” Call 911 if you see it. (SATURDAY UPDATE: Alex says his car has been recovered.)

Chief Sealth International HS is home at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), 7 pm, vs. Kennedy Catholic High School. Meantime, West Seattle HS is on the road, with a time change – 8 pm Friday at North Thurston HS (600 College St. NE, Lacey).

UPDATE: Seattle teacher strike? Another day of talks, picketing, ‘progress’

4:40 PM: Teachers at Denny International Middle School were out with signs a short time ago on this second day of informational picketing around the district, with no contract agreement yet and six days left until classes are set to start. Their counterparts at adjacent Chief Sealth International High School walked a line this morning:

(We have Wednesday photos from six schools in an earlier report.) No word yet on how negotiations went today between the district and union, but the latter reported “some progress” on Wednesday. We’ll update when there’s news. Meantime, preparations continue for the scheduled first day of school next Wednesday (September 5th) – no cancellations or changes in before-school-starts events since there’s no strike, yet.

10:57 PM: The union reports, “Our bargaining team worked until 9:30 pm. Continued conversations on substitute healthcare, nurses, and special education. Some progress made — we will be back at bargaining tomorrow morning!”

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: The district has posted an update saying it has “every reason to believe that the team will reach a tentative agreement this weekend and that school will begin on Sept. 5.”

West Seattle Crime Watch: Door-kick burglary

The photo and report are from Lauren, whose house was burglarized this morning:

We live in the Gatewood neighborhood on California Ave SW and SW Webster. While my boyfriend and I were at work, the house was broken into via the back door. It was kicked in and the panels that create the lower portion of the door collapsed. The only thing we have found stolen at this time was my wooden standing jewelry box/cabinet.

I’m pretty upset because most of my jewelry was not expensive, but sentimental. They got my watches, hair combs, costume jewelry, and some select few pieces of nice jewelry. I will keep an eye on the blog in case random bits get trashed or left in an alleyway, etc. The window for the break-in occurring was very small- I left for work at 7:30 am and my boyfriend returned at 11:30 am to meet a repairman for our dryer.

We’ll add the police report # when we get it from Lauren. (Update: 18-323552)

My wife had a major birthday today and 60 pink flamingos were ‘deposited’ in our front yard last night as a surprise to her this morning by Westside Flockers in the Fauntlee Hills neighborhood.

READER REPORT: Firework found after brush fire in Admiral neighborhood

Last night, we mentioned via Twitter a short-lived “brush fire with exposure,” so short-lived we didn’t head out to the scene at Fairmount and Stevens. But there’s more to the story. Today, neighbor Rosalie Miller sent photos and a report about the fire and what she found this morning:

I wanted to inform West Seattle residents that last night around 10 pm someone set an intentional fire across from our property. My husband was in the bedroom when he heard a car door close and moments later heard crackling sounds and saw flames and called the fire department.

The fire spread quickly through dry grass and foliage, approximately 10 x 20 feet before being extinguished. No one was injured. No property damage occurred although the fire stopped just short of the fence that encloses an adjacent property. This morning I found the casing from a firework called Ground Blossom fire bomb. I notified the fire department and they plan to add an addendum to their report. I sincerely hope that this was an isolated event. Glad to live in West Seattle where folk watch out for each other, and each other’s properties. Stay safe.

As noted in our second tweet, tipster Aaron told us neighbors had extinguished the fire. So we asked Rosalie about that. She replied, “We have a long hose that reached the street and we used it to extinguish the big flames while waiting for the fire department but there were still red hot embers present when the fire department got there and they finished the work and secured the perimeter around the fire location then left.”

FOLLOWUP: Colman Pool reopening today

Just announced by Seattle Parks via Twitter: “Colman Pool will be opening today for regularly scheduled programming. Thanks to our Facilities staff for their work fixing the broken pump.” The historic outdoor saltwater pool on the Lincoln Park shore has been closed since Monday afternoon because of the breakdown. Its 7-day-a-week season runs through Labor Day, and then the pool will close except for one postseason weekend, Saturday-Sunday, September 8-9. You can see the pool schedule here.

Project 968 (4617 37th SW; WSB sponsor) is expanding! Proprietor Michael Browder‘s fitness business in The Triangle has added a new studio location at 5621 Delridge Way SW, and new classes that you are invited to try for free over the next week and a half. Michael says the new Project Studio is “our new location for unlimited barre, yoga and Pilates classes that will sculpt, strengthen and stretch your body. Through September 7th, we are offering free classes and special limited pricing to the community to check out the new space, and services. Check out our schedule and contact us for a class. 7:29 AM: Good morning! The holiday weekend getaway starts in earnest today. So far this morning, no incidents in/from West Seattle.

STADIUM ZONE: Seahawks at home tonight, 7 pm, vs. Oakland. That means extended West Seattle Water Taxi service.

8:01 AM: Trouble on NB 35tb SW in Arbor Heights – stuck 21X bus blocking at 98th, just 2 blocks north of the sidewalk-project closure.
