On Thursday, June 6th at 7 pm you are invited to join NHUAC’s last meeting before our summer break. It is sure to be an information-packed discussion about important issues in and opportunities for the North Highline community.

Our new King County Councilmember, Teresa Mosqueda, will update us after her first 5 months on the council. She chairs three important committees: (1) King County Board of Health, (2) Health and Human Services Committee and (3) Regional Transit Committee. We’ll ask her about the ways life, health, and safety in North Highline can be improved by her work and her goal of improving “…social determinants of health so a kiddo born anywhere in the county has the opportunity to grow up healthy and happy.” Have any suggestions? Join us and add your voice to this important conversation.

We will also be joined by Jim Chan, King County’s Division Director for Permitting, and David Daw, External Relations Manager. We hope they will be able to report progress in gaining compliance from Tim’s Tavern with the county’s noise ordinance and zoning, which prohibits outside music venues in White Center. White Center’s Storefront Deputy, Detective Glen Brannon, will also be invited to participate in the conversation.

In urban areas such as North Highline, raw sewage can quickly impact neighbors. Keeping On-site Sewage/Septic Systems (OSS) safe and working well is vital to keeping all of us healthy. Public Health’s Meagan Jackson, OSS Interim Assistant Division Director, Environmental Health Division, and Lara Brezina, Interim Program Manager, OSS Operation and Maintenance, will update us on OSS.

Last, but certainly not least, Detective Brannon will share what the Sheriff’s Office has been doing to help make a safe North Highline.

Knowledge Is Power.

Learn, share, and help make North Highline a healthier community.

Clyde’s, at ArtsWest
Jun 6 @ 7:30 pm

ArtsWest will produce Clyde’s, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Sweat, Ruined). This co-production with The Hansberry Project will be directed by Seattle theatre staple Valerie Curtis-Newton. The cast features Reginald Jackson, Deja Culver, Jacob Alcazar, Joe Moore, and Tracy Michelle Hughes playing the titular role. Clyde’s performs at ArtsWest from June 6 through June 30, 2024. Tickets are available online at artswest.org or by phone at (206) 938.0963.

In this 2022 Tony Award®-Nominated Best Play, creating the perfect sandwich is the shared quest of the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of Clyde’s, a truck stop cafe. As the shop’s mischievous owner tries to keep them under her thumb, the staff work to see themselves as whole—to dream again—despite their pasts.

Through the lens of comedy and food, Nottage asks us to consider the long-term weight of the criminal justice system, the difficulties of reentry, and how we view second chances. Joe Moore, who plays Jason in the show, points to the fact that while we live in a country with “by far the biggest incarcerated population in the world,” there is “very little support” in the system for formerly incarcerated folks. This show calls us to “reflect on our own biases, and… open ourselves up to empath[y].” We hope you will join us.

ArtsWest will present Clyde’s, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

Join our donation-based community workout and help keep the music alive for our children. Your support ensures Mode Music Studios continues to fill our community with the joy of music.

The Sweet After-Burn: Stick around after the workout for some coffee and treats on us. It’s our thank-you for joining us and a perfect chance to get to know some other awesome people.

Loop the ‘Lupe 2024 @ Walt Hundley Playfield
Jun 8 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Loop the ‘Lupe, the only obstacle course race in Seattle city limits, is back on June 8 th in West Seattle! “This year, we have a terrific deal for families and teams,” says race organizer Brian Callanan. “When people sign up four or more people at a time, there’s an automatic discount. That discount increases even more when you register 10+ people, so bring everyone and anyone!”

Loop the ‘Lupe’s Elite Wave (age 16+) features nine obstacles on a distance-certified 1K “loop,” including a wall climb, a mud pit, and more. New this year, the Elite event will be streamlined to get participants through the obstacles more quickly. Participants finish five loops for the full 5K race, and there are prizes from local restaurants and merchants for top finishers. The Family Wave features seven obstacles on the same loop and offers a challenge for athletes of all skill levels. Events begin with a staggered start at 11 a.m. (see www.loopthelupe.com for details).

A one-loop Youth Dash with obstacles is available for kids 8 and under (with adult supervision), and there’s a no-obstacle 5K Run/Walk course for runners and walkers, too. “Seattle really doesn’t have another local race like this one, and it truly offers something for everyone,” says Race Director Jared Loranger, of Fizz Events. “From hardcore obstacle racers to young kids, we’ve got you covered!”

For older participants (age 65+), Loop the ‘Lupe also features the “Senior Saunter,” a 100% flat, timed walk that is one of the most popular senior-focused races in Seattle.

“This is a wonderful community event we’re proud to support,” says Molly Swain of Providence Mount St. Vincent, an assisted living facility stepping up again as the Loop’s Senior Saunter sponsor. “We’re bringing a big team, so we’re inviting everyone, grandparents included, to join the fun!”

Loop the ‘Lupe will also have live music provided by the students of West Seattle School of Rock. Plus, participants can enjoy food, drinks, and a beer garden (age 21+) for additional purchase. Proceeds raised from the event go toward the costs of social outreach work at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, which helps prisoners re-entering the community, coordinates voter registration and racial justice education, and much more. Through their partnership with the St. Vincent de Paul Conference, OLG supports food distribution and assistance for rent and utilities for low-income families.  “We’re here to help everyone in our community, regardless of their faith background,” says Parish Administrator Michelle Scheving. “That need for help is growing, so we’re very thankful for everyone participating in the Loop the have a good time for a great local cause.”

Clyde’s, at ArtsWest
Jun 8 @ 7:30 pm

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Jun 11 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Clyde’s, at ArtsWest
Jun 13 @ 7:30 pm

Morgan Junction All-Wheel Association community meeting at Morgan Junction Community Festival @ Morgan Junction Park
Jun 15 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

The Morgan Junction All-Wheel Association (MJAWA) is excited to announce our second community meeting for the Morgan Junction Park expansion.

Hosted at the Morgan Junction Community Festival, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the three skate spot design options from legendary West Seattle-based skatepark builder Grindline, participate in the interactive Skate Like a Girl “MJ Ramp-age,” and be entered to win a skate prizes from By and By skate shop or project t-shirt. All community

members are invited to vote for their favorite design on-site on Saturday, June 15.
“We are excited to present these design options to the Morgan Junction community,” said Matt Fluegge,CEO of Grindline. “Our goal is to create a space that not only meets the needs of local kids, but also enhances the overall park experience for everyone. The feedback we’ve received has been invaluable, and we’re committed to building a park that the community will be proud of.”

Grindline has incorporated feedback from the first community meeting on April 27, as well as a Seattle Parks and Recreation survey at last year’s Morgan Junction Community Festival.

In addition to the design presentations, Skate Like a Girl will be sponsoring the “MJ Ramp-age” feature. This interactive area will allow attendees to move real ramps around a 1,500 sq ft space, providing a hands-on experience to explore how different park features might feel and flow together.

Kristin Ebeling, Executive Director of Skate Like a Girl, added, “Skateboarding has the power to transform lives. It is both a physical and creative outlet with the power to build intergenerational community. We are proud to be part of a project that will create an accessible entry point for emerging skaters and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the Morgan Junction neighborhood.”

“Skateboarding teaches perseverance, creativity, and resilience,” said Jason Glover, Chief Sealth high school teacher and local skateboarder. “I’ve seen firsthand how students who skateboard develop a strong sense of self-confidence and community. It’s more than just a sport; it’s a way for kids to express themselves and build essential life skills.”

All-Ages Open Mic at The Spot West Seattle
Jun 15 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Saturday All-ages Open Mic 7 to 10 pm

Clyde’s, at ArtsWest
Jun 15 @ 7:30 pm

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs … so please check our website for updates.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Please note! If you can’t make it to the monthly drive, you can leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance. IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.

Deepest gratitude to our community for your generous support of our neighbors in need.
