The Environmental Justice Group of the Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation will wave signs and provide info at the Alaska Junction opposing the dangerous Initiative 2117, which would eliminate WA’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA). We will gather, wave and inform from 12:30-2 p.m. at California Ave SW and SW Alaska. All are welcome. https://no2117.com
A hedge fund billionaire funded the initiative which would be disastrous and would set back WA from meaningfully addressing climate change. The CCA, funded by taxing WA’s worst polluters, supports many energy projects, addresses those disproportionately affected by climate change, funds various transportation programs, and helps a variety of other constituencies, including tribes, farmers, and schools. We can’t afford to stop these programs.

The Community Acupuncture Project of Burien will host an anniversary celebration at their clinic space
Address: 1800 SW 152nd Street Suite 200
Phone: 206-535-6996
W: www.acupunctureforall.orgThe Community Acupuncture Project of Burien survived the pandemic and rising rents to continue to offer accessible health care in South King County. This woman/LGBTQ/locally owned community clinic, rooted in justice, was recognized as an outstanding business earlier this year by Discover Burien.
On Sunday, September 15th, the Community Acupuncture Project of Burien will host an anniversary celebration at their clinic space from 3 – 5 pm. Light refreshments, free ear acupuncture treatments, clinic tours, and free clinic tee-shirts will be available. This woman/LGBTQ/locally owned community clinic is celebrating five years at its Burien location in the Seahurst neighborhood, and 15 years of operations since first opening in Columbia City, Seattle in 2009.1
Inspired by the community acupuncture model pioneered in the United States by Working Class Acupuncture in Portland, Oregon2, Sonja Sivesind and former co-owner Angie Hughes, chose to operate their clinic as a group room acupuncture space. Furnishing their two-room clinic with recliner chairs and massage tables allowed the acupuncturists to treat many different people in the same community space at reduced treatment fees. Operating as a high-volume, low cost clinic, allowed CAP to provide acupuncture to many people, as family, friends and neighbors healed side-by-side. Though they’ve been able to offer acupuncture offsite over the years at community colleges, neighborhood fairs, farmers markets, immigrant rights organizations, and school fairs, most of the 100,000 treatments CAP practitioners have provided have been at one of their three clinic locations: Columbia City, West Seattle, and Burien.
CAP has gone through many changes over the past 15 years. The Columbia City location was sold in 2012 and subsequently closed. After 10 years of operations at the California/Alaska
Junction, the West Seattle location closed in 2021. The Burien location has been able to remain open through increased health measures (air filters, health screening, and masks) and because of the trust and support of the greater community.
Operating as a community clinic has demanded that CAP practitioners apply their skills to a large range of conditions their patients may present with on any given day. It’s not uncommon for a single practitioner to treat whiplash, arthritis pain, fertility, chemotherapy side effects, long COVID3, substance abuse recovery4, hormone imbalances, stress, PTSD, insomnia, allergies, and digestive issues on a single shift. In the wake of the ongoing opioid epidemic, the need for affordable, accessible pain relief options remains critical to the well-being of our communities.5 Keeping acupuncture treatments within reach to working families is critical. The team at CAP hopes to remain an accessible resource by offering low treatment fees – that have only been raised twice in fifteen years – and through a schedule offering weeknight, morning, and weekend hours.6
The clinic was pleasantly surprised to be recognized this past March by Discover Burien, as a “Special Shout Out for Outstanding Individual or Business” in the community.7 Guiding its inception and operations ever since, CAP’s mission is to “provide high-quality treatments at affordable rates to as many people as possible, and as often as necessary. We treat patients in a respectful, trauma-informed care practice, in a collective room, with others seeking healing. Treatments are offered in recliner chairs and massage tables, seven days a week. Collaborating with our community, we co-create healing, hope, and collective liberation, through acupuncture and social justice. All are welcome here.”8 Founded in 2009, the clinic currently has four acupuncturists on staff and four front desk volunteers.
Our upcoming concert is on Sunday, September 15, at 3:00 pm at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and features a performance of the GRAMMY®-nominated piece, the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, by American composer Benedict Sheehan. The performance includes 33 of the finest professional ensemble singers from the Seattle area and beyond, and will feature basso profundo, Glenn Miller, and solo performances from bass Jason Thoms, baritone Harrison Hintzsche, and alto Sarra Sharif Doyle.
Winner, 2016 Obie Award for Best New American Play
Winner, 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding PlayIn 1648 India, two Imperial Guards watch from their post as the sun rises for the first time on the newly-completed Taj Mahal—an event that shakes their respective worlds. When they are ordered to perform an unthinkable task, the aftermath forces them to question the concepts of friendship, beauty, and duty, and changes them forever. GUARDS AT THE TAJ is one of Pulitzer Prize Finalist Rajiv Joseph’s seminal works.
“Absorbing…GUARDS AT THE TAJ raises potent questions about the human price paid throughout history for the caprices of the mighty, even when they result in architectural wonders that ultimately give pleasure to the masses.” —The New York Times
“Rajiv Joseph gives us plenty to admire in his play…He hooks us quickly. He surprises with tonal shifts, jumping from The Odd Couple breezy to Game of Thrones ghastly. He creates compelling and sympathetic characters.” —New York Daily News
THE OPTION OF FLOOR SEATING
Enjoy an immersive experience in the Indian tradition by witnessing the show from a gau takiya, a cushioned floor seat, along with the musicians. The Floor Seating option for this presentation provides you with an option to get out of the theatre seats, make yourself comfortable and enjoy the show from the same level as the artists. This limited option is general admission.
“Nearly all (Indian classical) musical recitals involved musicians, as well as listeners, sitting at the same ground level (not separated by a stage). Musicians thought this the best way to get maximum audience interaction and eye-contact, a vital part of an Indian classical recital, whereby the performer can receive continuous inspiration and appreciation.” (Jameela Siddiqi, Danbar.org)
When the audience shares the floor as the performer, the audience in a most subtle way is invited to become a part of the story, to become a part of the character’s life. Removing your shoes is an option, but not a requirement. Please contact the box office if you have any additional questions.
Only 8 floor seats available each performance.

F3, a free national men’s workout group:
We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.
The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Seattle’s Forest:
The West Duwamish GreenbeltThe city’s largest contiguous forest, the West Duwamish Greenbelt, covers more than 500 acres and spans more than four miles along the Duwamish Peninsula. Its ridges, river, and creeks formed over thousands of years and sustain a diverse habitat for wildlife. Coast Salish people have lived among and harvested from its forests and waterways for tens of thousands of years.
Beginning in the 1850s, as the city evolved from industry, so too did this forest. Despite intense urbanization, many have fought for its preservation.

Hello Alki!
We hope you’ve had a fantastic summer! As we gear up for fall, we’re excited to welcome new neighbors to our upcoming meeting and send a warm greeting to our long-time members and volunteers.
Our next meeting will be a bit shorter this month, with a two-part agenda. After 7:35 p.m., we’ll transition into an executive session with new board members, where we’ll discuss key topics such as organizational vision, growth and web and communication updates.
This will be our first Zoom-only meeting of the year, and while we’ll miss seeing you all in person, we’re already preparing for a special in-person hybrid meeting at Alki United Church of Christ in October – complete with guest speakers (tbd), and some fun fall activities! See Thursday’s agenda and Zoom links for the next three meetings below.
We look forward to connecting with you online next Thursday!
Warm regards,
Charlotte Starck

Please join Seattle Public Utilities on September 21, National Cleanup Day, for a community cleanup!
The four locations are :
Ballard Community Center (Ballard): 10 am – 1 pm
Little Brook Park (Lake City): 9 am – 12 pm
High Point Community Center (West Seattle): 10 am – 1 pm
Jefferson Park (Beacon Hill): 9 am – 12 pmRegister for National Clean Up Day with SPU
At each location, SPU will be providing supplies to pick up litter and stencil storm drains. There will also be snacks, and information about stormwater pollution, Adopt a Street and Adopt a Drain. Please come on out to help keep our communities clean and protect the Puget Sound.
Why a community clean up?
With busy streets and tens of thousands of storm drains, SPU partners with Seattlites to reduce potential water pollutants such as litter, chemical spills, car leaks, dog waste and more. If not cleaned up, these pollutants can be swept by rainfall into our water bodies, including Puget Sound. Keeping our water clean helps to protect salmon, orcas, and everyone who depends on our waters.

BY PAUL DE BARROS
Are you hip to pianist Ray Skjelbred? He travels mostly in traditional jazz circles and was off the Northwest scene for a long time, but if you love quality, classic jazz of any stripe, check this guy out. He radiates clarity, intelligence, originality, and joy. His trio with reed player Jacob Zimmerman and bassist Matt Weiner plays regularly at The Royal Room (watch their crisp performance this past January on YouTube). He also plays solo from time to time.
Back in 1960, Skjelbred – pronounced “shellbread” – studied with the great Seattle trad pianist Johnny Wittwer while attending the University of Washington, then co-founded Great Excelsior, one of Seattle’s first – and very best – classic jazz bands. Over the years, he has hung out with Earl Hines, Milt Hinton, Joe Sullivan, and Jess Stacy, to name just a few of his well-known friends. In 2017, he recorded a lively, concise and informative documentary at The Royal Room, Piano Jazz – Chicago Style!, which won the New York Jazz Film Festival’s historical documentary award.
