I would call this discussion “vibrant”. I started to swing in the personal and there were some accusations flung but it got back on track. It’s important to hear both sides. I, personally, actually know a Trump supporter! And what I gleaned from his remarks is much the same as here: That government has run amuck, that it is becoming imperialist and that we must do everything we can to shrink it. Now, we Dems know that no one grew the government like the Republicans. Although they say they want to shrink government, what they really want to do is govern people’s bedrooms while allowing monopolistic corporations to run amuck. Trump is not going to shrink government. Rounding up 11 million people is going to require a large army of government-trained troops. He’s not going to reduce the budget because building a wall and rounding up 11 million people is going to cost a lot. he has no plans to reduce the number of people on welfare. He really offers NOTHING that Trump supporters actually want except to be a stick in the eye to Replublicans for screwing them over for years.

JanS: I am not blaming anybody. I just think a lot of people just don’t see the direct impact of escalating taxes until after even more people become impoverished. Maybe it would be different if local government were not so corrupt, inefficient and unaccountable to the people they work for. Affordable housing can be achieved by improving transportation throughput instead of working to constrict traffic. There is an immense amount of low-cost land within easy commuting distance from Seattle if only we had functional roads.

JKB: I said nothing about regulatory requirements. I just think that if landlords voluntarily let their tenants know how much property taxes were buried in their rent, that maybe renters would be more cautious about approving things that they would otherwise think other people pay for.

the solution that I hear most often, for those of low income that need housing is….move…go where it’s cheaper. And that’s sad. Unfortunately, that’s what people are doing. My neighbor is moving to a room shared in a house in Kent next week. She works in the Junction. She can’t afford the rent here (I am holding on for dear life – have lived in this apt for 17 years). She will have an approximately 1.5 hour commute each way during rush hour, instead of a 10 minute commute. Yes, we need answers…this is very sad, indeed.

Now captainDave, are you proposing a regulatory requirement?

I could see a whole audit in that statement: cost of capital, insurance, taxes, earmarked social programs, cost of police/fire based on the tenant’s records, mandated capital improvements, payments to the homelessness reduction council….

Some thoughts about the idea that current valuations are so high… okay, it’s been about 8 years since the crash in which we all lost about 30%. Recovering 30% over that time isn’t surprising. Plus the crash was a temporary dislocation anyway. Lots of extra housing on the market and many fewer buyers, both due to all the foreclosures. Supply and demand, of course the prices went down. Now the supply is normal and some of the buyers have made it back into the game.

You can’t just equate higher prices to lack of affordability, because price is only relative to income. All those $15/hour people just got a 30% pay raise, right? I realize they’re not the homebuying market, but rents roughly track with purchase price. So to evaluate affordability, you’d really want to see how incomes and prices have each changed, and identify segments of the populace that are better or worse off, and that’s a complicated thing requiring a lot more data than the newspapers give us.

Finally, I added up what I spent to buy my house and to pay property taxes on it these last 20 years. I think I could get just about exactly 2x that total if I sold today. That illustrates the value in avoiding a forced sale (I went through the crash too, have been unemployed, had medical issues, etc.) that locks in losses. But as an average return over a long time, it’s not spectacular. It’s a place to live.

Please please do not anybody say the words “rent control” without reviewing how they’ve worked in other cities. Chicago, Boston, New York…

it’s difficult to know how to address the root cause. I heard yesterday that Washington.. not just Seattle.. has a higher mean housing price than it did at the top of the housing boom… which means that affordable housing is moving further out of reach for everyone.. not just in the Seattle urban core.

We are either going to have to subsidize affordable housing or impose rent controls…

I am not sure this levy will accomplish either goal.. which is why i think we should keep pressure on city hall to spend these dollars wisely.

“Or maybe you are close enough to retirement that you don’t give a crap about anyone else’s future.”

I won’t be retiring any time soon and even when I do it won’t affect my ability to care about other people.

“What do you believe Hillary Clinton will do to get people off welfare and back to worK? I believe the short answer is NOTHING because she is the one who enacted the plan to put most of them on the government dole to begin with.”

What plan is that? When was Hillary president?

“How will more taxes and more regulations increase opportunities for new businesses and new private sector jobs that create real goods?”

What new taxes and regulations has Hillary proposed?

“How will Hillary’s open borders solution…”

What open border solution? I know about a path to citizenship proposal for those living here but I don’t recall any opening of the borders.

“Why do you think Hillary’s long trail of corruption, lies and deceit suddenly end if she were to become president?”

Have you looked at Donald Trump’s trail? I was a Bernie guy, but at this point we have 2 choices, Hillary or Trump. Trump is the most morally, temperamentally, and mentally unfit person to hold the nomination for a major office in my lifetime (oh, wait, I forgot about S Palin). To me, it’s a no-brainer. To you, perhaps it’s different. Luckily, my vote cancels yours.

dobro: I have been in business for 39 years and doing just fine as well despite bureaucratic challenges to working in this city. But I am not so ignorant to project my own situation on the entire country. Seattle is enjoying the proceeds of an economic bubble right now largely because of the transition from brick and mortar to online retail–we benefit because much of the rest of the country is dying. Do you really think that is a sustainable strategy? Or maybe you are close enough to retirement that you don’t give a crap about anyone else’s future.

What do you believe Hillary Clinton will do to get people off welfare and back to worK? I believe the short answer is NOTHING because she is the one who enacted the plan to put most of them on the government dole to begin with.

How will more taxes and more regulations increase opportunities for new businesses and new private sector jobs that create real goods?

How will Hillary’s open borders solution make us safer against the ruthless and despotic world powers she helped embolden (namely ISIS and Iran)? or the mass illegal drug importation from Mexico?

How does flooding the country with cheep unskilled labor (and drugs) make it easier for our own citizens to have jobs?

Why do you think Hillary’s long trail of corruption, lies and deceit suddenly end if she were to become president?

    “I don’t know your specific situation…”

I am self employed, have been for 40 years, run my own business, and have never worked for or been subsidized by any gov’t, other than the services (roads, fire dept, etc…you know, socialism) my taxes pay for. My view of the economy for small biz is ground level and I’m doing fine and expect to continue so, thank you.Looks like your simplistic stereotypes don’t always pan out to be true. Your Trumpistic view doesn’t play in my neighborhood.

JanS: I am so sorry to hear about your broken jaw. I hope it heels quickly.

redblack: When has Fascism ever been associated with anything other than tyrannical forms of centralized government? Why do you believe tax law should be so complex that people in our society can’t understand it? I know a lot of tax attorneys and accountants who are against reducing the complexity of the system, but that’s because they’re often the one’s who lobbied for things that give them more billing hours and less competition–I call that cronyism, but others might call it a step towards fascism. But so what? The effect of reducing productivity and freedom for the benefit of a few is still the same.

dobro: Your link is an advertorial by Allstate to encourage people to start businesses because they need more customers. If business is so great, why does Allstate have to pay to coax more people to start businesses?–this should be an obvious red flag to a smart, highly educated guy like you. Your other link doesn’t address the overall decline in world freedom caused by the current trend towards global socialism. Nearly all markets are in contraction, so a comparison isn’t relevant unless you include the height of the cliff everyone is falling off from.

I don’t know your specific situation, but your derogatory remarks seem consistent with people who are, or were: 1.) employed by government, 2.) employed by a business that is largely supported or protected by government, or 3.) living off of an income supplied or guaranteed by government. If so, good for you. But realize that your view from the upper decks of the Titanic may soon change if nothing is done to fix what’s happening bellow. If you wait until the lights go out, it may be too late to do anything about it.

Our beautiful home in Riverview is being offered for sale. Open houses this Saturday & Sunday!
Please visit link above to find out more. Some things we have loved about this house:

We love the retreat of the master bedroom, the city view of the office, and the feeling of being in a private oasis in West Seattle.
It’s centrally located to all the amenities W. Seattle has to offer, and is easy to get to i-5, Hwy 99, and downtown. Even though it is a main street, the neighborhood is very quiet. The yard has been fully leveled with all-organic soil, and the beds are ready for your fall garden.

The kitchen is super for entertaining, and is well laid out. It’s easy to cook or clean and talk to people too! There is great light, and the sunsets are amazing off both decks. The fireplaces are super cozy, and provide quick heat in the winter.

The way the house is situated on the street provides privacy – even though it is a smaller lot, there is a lot of seclusion. The 125 bus runs regularly, and there are usually plenty of cars2go in the neighborhood.

This house is low maintenance – everything works, it’s ready for your move in, and for you to start any project! (There are outlets EVERYWHERE.)
