In reply to: Infamous West Seattle?
scooby-snaxMemberi’ve heard that there is a shooting range under the stands at west seattle stadium (by the golf course) and a man (cheating on his wife)was murdered there by her and his ghost still haunts the place.

ZenguyParticipantSupposedly Andrew’s father murdered him for being gay.
I grew up in West Seattle and have little recolection of any serious crimes, part of why I like it now I suppose.
I read the West Seattle Herald police blotter on an almost weekly basis (the writer is hysterical) but there is not a lot in the way of serious crimes there either.

WSratsinacageMemberYeah, I read about Andrew’s on the previous posts about ghosts, etc .. I appreciate the entries so far but I guess what I am getting at is similar to the private eye tours of Queen Anne and Capitol Hill where they take you to places where crimes were committed.

JennyMember> JoB: Perhaps it’s time to ask the harder questions. what makes Sarah Palin relevant? What do we need to know about her? How much could she affect our political landscape?
> Our history is full of Vice Presidents nobody remembers. So why does Sarah Palin matter so much?
As VP I don’t think Sarah Palin matters as much as the left thinks she does. I think the VAST majority of the invective & terror the left is spewing about her is a pose.
Unless it’s because of what Palin represents. Seriously, I keep seeing this classic scene from Easy Rider play over & over in my head when I see y’all yelling “UNCLEAN!!! UNCLEAN!!!” at the sight of her name:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHd6m_cirrU
Substitute “feminist” for “freedom” or “liberated woman” for “free individual”, and “it’s real hard to be independent when you’re a professional victim working for the Women’s Auxillary of the Democratic Party” for “it’s real hard to be free when you’re bought and sold in the marketplace”.
As Nicholson says, “It’s not about [her]. It’s what [she] represents.” Did y’all really expect that when the Feminist Revolution succeeded, that all women would become pro-abortion, atheist, pacifist, gaia-worshipping multiculturalists? True freedom begets diversity of thought, people!
Now, in the long run I think that Sarah Palin means “only Nixon can go to China.” So maybe in 4 or 8 years Palin will go up against Clinton & this time Clinton will win. Or Pelosi. Or hey, Patty Murray or Darcy Burner, LOL! The point is, after Palin is in office, it’ll be Katy bar the door.
Now, frankly I do wish she’d been tapped in 4 or 8 years instead of this year. But even if McCain were to drop dead on January 21, President Palin would have had 4 months of intensive briefings to get up to speed. Plus she’d have McCain’s cabinet & the Executive Branch to support her. Plus she’d soon appoint her own VP, who would surely be a foreign policy expert.
And thus would the Sarah Palin/Condoleeza Rice administration continue to lead the country for 4 or 8 years. Causing half of all US Feminists to flee to Canada in despair. =:-D

i think Carly would make a better VP than Sarah…
and she hung herself with the same tactics that Sarah uses…
but at least she does understand a spreadsheet.

JoBParticipanti think you are right, that it will be an uphill battle to get people to pay for the plastic bags they use…
especially when it is emotionally called a tax…
they think they are getting something for nothing now… after all every cost associated with those free bags is hidden.
But it won’t be for long if it fails.
i don’t think i am going to enjoy listening to those same people whine when their garbage bill goes up if it doesn’t pass… because the bill for picking up and recycling those bags will have to be paid one way or another.
i really am not going to enjoy saying “I told you so” as i am writing the check for the fees i could have easily avoided paying.
I am not going to enjoy listening to those same people whine about the litter lining our streets and hiways.. or the litter on the beach either…
And i am no longer going to pick up someone else’s mess if the fee doesn’t pass.
the signature gatherers didn’t get signatures opposing the bag fee.. they got signatures calling for a vote on the bag tax.
In fact, if you said no, they pursued you explaining that all it would do is bring the policy to a public vote.
I saw several people buy that and sign.
as for those who oppose the bag fee here…
i am still waiting for one of you who oppose this fee on this forum to come up with anything that looks like even a partial solution to the problem…
I know..
you can’t make me.

JennyMember> JenV: even the National Organization for Women has thrown their support behind Obama/Biden…
??? Like that was a surprise or something?
> charlabob: Check out Carly Fiorino (defrocked CEO of HP) who basically says, hell, no!, when asked if Palin could run a large American corporation. “But that’s not the job she’s running for.” Stunning .. simply stunning! These people will defend anything.
So, um, you saying you’d rather see Carly Fiorina run for president?

JoBParticipantanother article speaking about bias in labeling in this election…
unfortunately, it too compares the bias in labeling for Palin to that of Barak.. without the racist subtext.
but it still contains fairly interesting commentary on the way our media can bias public perception by the choice of words…

JeffSavoieMemberA couple days ago, I removed a mother raccoon and two second litter* juveniles, from the 40th & Hanford area.
*It’s worth noting, that female raccoons that lose a litter in spring will often come into estrus a second time.
This spring seems to be one with an exceptional second birthing, both in it’s volume, and in it’s lateness.
Female wild animals, with dependent young, are the most aggressive. Be aware that there are still quite a few around.

RainyDay1235MemberSorry, but I’m guessing the paid petition takers probably did not state the full breakdown of where the funds will go, or the reason why this is needing a solution. “Here – sign this or else they will charge you what was once free!”
In that instance, maybe it is better it’s going to a vote. I just think this is all so silly. Why should bags be free anyway? Bringing your own bags is so easy. Plastic bags are bad for the environment. What else matters?

beachdrivegirlParticipantThe crazy thing is… is that they got enough signztures in a weeks time; when they thought @ first it would take a month or more…. i think it really shows what the majority of the city of seattle’s position is on the issue.

There is also a great article today by my fav political writer, Tom Freidman:

IrukandjiParticipantwestwoodmom,
Thanks for being on the caring end of outreach for this kid and his family.
I had a similar incident last year with a young girl whose babysitter had left her at the park because she just didn’t get it together to leave quickly enough (babysitter was in charge of four kids). The girl didn’t have any contact info, couldn’t spell her mom’s last name, didn’t have a home or cell number for parents or sitter. GEEEEZ! Add to that a call to 911 found that no one had reported her missing, though she had been alone at the park a very long time looking for her sitter before approaching me. The community center did all they could to identify the girl and take my contact info. I ended up walking her home, about a mile, since she vaguely knew where she lived even though she didn’t know her address.

DianeParticipantre: flowerpetal; “Getting enough signatures for a vote on any issue does not posit that a majority care about that issue. If so, every initiative/referendum would have passed.”

true, but I do think most care
~
and we will find out when everyone gets to vote on this next Aug, included on the primary ballot

unless the City Council makes another blunder and calls for a special election earlier, which would be very costly

Call me juvenile if you like, but sooner or later we need to get our noses out of the pet peeve issues and create some substantial change.
September 16, 2008 at 8:43 pm #639171In reply to: 20-cent bag fee will not take effect Jan 1
DianeParticipantFortunately part of our democratic process is ALSO the option to go directly to the people for a vote on the issue when/if the folks we voted into office fail us; if the majority did not care about this, they would not have gotten enough signatures
~
(i.e., this is exactly what we had to do to get the smoke-free law passed; our city, county, state elected officials continually failed us so we had to go directly to the people; if it were not for the initiative process, we would probably still have stinky, smoky public places)
~
and the city council members who passed this ridiculous law, who I voted for, will NOT be getting my vote next time; the one stand-out maverick, Jan Drago, will for sure get my vote
