this came to my inbox from Charlabob…

It seems she and I share a love of Anne Lamont…

what she wrote for Salon has relevance to this thread, i think.. and reminds us we are not alone… a Christian woman’s perspective…

“I had to leave church Sunday morning when it turned out that the sermon was not about bearing up under desperate circumstances, when you feel like you’re going crazy because something is being perpetrated upon you and your country that is so obscene that it simply cannot be happening.

I sat outside a 7-Eleven and had a sacramental Dove chocolate bar. Jeez: Here we are again. A man and a woman whose values we loathe and despise — lying, rageful and incompetent, so dangerous to children and old people, to innocent people in every part of the world — are being worshiped, exalted by the media, in a position to take a swing at all that is loveliest about this earth and what’s left of our precious freedoms.

When I got home from church, I drank a bunch of water to metabolize the Dove bar and called my Jesuit friend, who I know hates these people, too. I asked, “Don’t you think God finds these smug egomaniacs morally repellent? Recoils from their smugness as from hot flame?”

And he said, “Absolutely. They are everything He or She hates in a Christian.” “

Either I don’t get it or I am missing something….where is the press coverage period.

Yesterday all Chris Matthews could complain about was that Obama lacked passion in his attack on McCains economic policy. I heard Obama’s speech and I thought he presented it very well…the media wants sensationlism and drama and Obama isn’t into that. He is too intelligent for most people ….and especially some of these “yahoos” in the media. It’s refreshng to me to hear someone speak intelligently and actually answer a question….what a concept.

Ok everyone….now is the time to read Naomi Klien’s book “Shock Doctrine” seriously….if you want to understand the impact of our economic policies this book will “grip” you…..

I want to hear one more time how the Republicans are so against regulatory laws…….and then explain the benefits of that theory….would be interesting…..

Wow Bonnie, that is amazing! I read Ann Rule’s book and Dave Reichert’s too, a couple of years ago.

JenV, have you read Ann Rule’s story about Neslund? It’s pretty good.

Have you queried the parks department about this? Do you know that the bags aren’t biodegradeable? Do you have an alternative solution for removing large amounts of garbage from these containers in a safe and cost effective way?

I don’t think an investigative report into their teaching of child/wife abuse will give them the type of “persecution” coverage that they want, and at the very least, will clue local people in on what appears to be a very innocuous church in the middle of a suburb.

A widowed woman in her 80’s was the organ player for her local church for many years. Hearing that she was sick, the pastor went by her house to check on her.

While visiting with her, the pastor noticed a condom floating in a bowl of water sitting on her organ. Curious, he asked the woman about it – she replied:

Well, I found this package laying on the ground near my house and the instructions said to open up the package, place it on your organ, keep it wet, and it will keep away diseases!

The problem with Tedd Tripp and his church is that media feeds them. This new breed of the American Taliban get all riled up when they feel they are being persecuted by the media. It feeds the self righteousness that they are suffering just like Jesus did.

I fyou do some searching on youtube, for tedd trip, there are some great speaches that he gives advocating similar treatment for wives as he does children. Bring on the Jesus Burka.

HOW TO BE A GOOD REPUBLICAN

    1. You have to believe that the nation’s current 8-year prosperity was due to the work of Ronald Reagan and George Bush, but yesterday’s gasoline prices are all Clinton’s fault.

    2. You have to believe that those privileged from birth achieve success all on their own.

    3. You have to be against all government programs, but expect Social Security checks on time.

    4. You have to believe that AIDS victims deserve their disease, but smokers with lung cancer and overweight individuals with heart disease don’t deserve theirs.

    5. You have to appreciate the power rush that comes with sporting a gun.

    6. You have to believe everything Rush Limbaugh says.

    7. You have to believe that the agricultural, restaurant, housing and hotel industries can survive without immigrant labor.

    8. You have to believe God hates homosexuality, but loves the death penalty.

    9. You have to believe society is color-blind and growing up black in America doesn’t diminish your opportunities, but you still won’t vote for Alan Keyes.

    10. You have to believe that pollution is OK as long as it makes a profit.

    11. You have to believe in prayer in schools, as long as you don’t pray to Allah or Buddha.

    12. You have to believe Newt Gingrich and Henry Hyde were really faithful husbands.

    13. You have to believe speaking a few Spanish phrases makes you instantly popular in the barrio.

    14. You have to believe that only your own teenagers are still virgins.

    15. You have to be against government interference in business, until your oil company, corporation or Savings and Loan is about to go broke and you beg for a government bail out.

    16. You love Jesus and Jesus loves you and, by the way, Jesus shares your hatred for AIDS victims, homosexuals, and President Clinton.

    17. You have to believe government has nothing to do with providing police protection, national defense, and building roads.

    18. You have to believe a poor, minority student with a disciplinary history and failing grades will be admitted into an elite private school with a $1,000 voucher.

JenV, they’ve actually stopped displaying results of exit polls on election day until all the polls across the country are closed. Less from a sense of civic obligation than from a sense of humiliation because of the 2000 “results.”

Before that, it’s really the job of the campaigns to make clear that voting matters (and to make sure that all the caging fails.)

I actually prefer the “tea leaf approach.” In years when the American League wins the AllStar game and two teams from west of the Missisipi are in the World Series, the candidate of the incumbent party wins.” I made that one up, but I have seen some almost as silly.

Today is the 221st birthday of the US Constitution (anniversary of the signing).

Here’s a link to an interview with John Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States. Note the position is not Chief Justice of the Supreme Court — that’s on purpose. :-)

    http://tinyurl.com/6eg9oc

And a link to the constitution:

    http://tinyurl.com/u1pn

I specifically didn’t post this in a political thread, because if any celebration should be nonpartisan, it is this one.

I have a paper copy of the constitution in my office and people come to read or look stuff up from time to time; even though it’s online, it is nice to just see in “real life”.

Did Gary Ridgeway have ties to West Seattle? I didn’t realize that. I used to work with him at Kenworth. Kind of freaky that we were in the same building or waiting in line at the cafeteria and he could have been right next to me.

by far the best WS-related crime in my book – Rolf Neslund, the ships captain who rammed the WS Bridge…later murdered by his wife for his retirement money…cut up and burned to nothing in the back yard. If only she hadn’t drunkenly confessed the crime to her niece.

polls mean nothing…and I really wish they would stop the media from using them on election day. people see the polls and think, oh well, it’s already decided- I might as well not vote. Polls mean nothing- zip, nada.

Polls are brought to you by The Institute for Pulling Numbers out of our A$$.

I finally have my new asphalt driveway. I hired Superior Asphalt Company whose bid to remove existing driveway and replace it (the right way) was lower than other bids just to go over the top with a couple inches of asphalt. They were fast and professional and even some neighbors were in awe of the organized job effort.

well, this is both funny and sad….from Moveon.org:

Get this. Apparently, John McCain invented the BlackBerry! Today, McCain’s top economic adviser waved a BlackBerry in front of reporters and said, “He did this…You’re looking at the miracle John McCain helped create.”

A miracle indeed. Who ever would have guessed that the BlackBerry was invented by a 72-year-old man who recently called himself computer “illiterate,” talked about “a Google,” and said he “watches” blogs?

    Thanks Jo and Jan.

    I appreciate everyone’s kind offers.

Of course, the main thing I have to watch is the sodium, and with my weight, although much of it seems to be water weight, I suppose fat and calories should be taken into consideration. (Darn it! ;-) ).

I’m really hard to displease when it comes to food. The only things I can’t quite deal with are Bleu Cheese, avocado, and liver/liverwurst type stuff.

I’ll let anyone who would like to, be the person of contact.

    Thanks again!

Just got this note from KUOW, can’t put it on the top page because the breaking news about Blackbird needs to stay at top for a while:

    >>I’m running an interview today at 2:20 with Clay Eals…West Seattle historian, writer and my neighbor in the Admiral District. Folks might want to check it out…fun (and sort of creepy) recounting of the story of the ramming of the West Seattle bridge in 1978….and its aftermath….great overview of transportation efforts in West Seattle dating back to the first ferry from West Seattle to the city in 1888…the establishment of West Seattle’s once elaborate street car system in 1902……it’s a fun and informative chat (Clay sings a bit of a West Seattle neighborhood song from the 1910’s!)…..nice chat and I think WS folks would enjoy it.

Tune in live at 2:20 today at KUOW…94.9….or download it from our archives or podcast….www.kuow.org…search for information on today’s Sound Focus Broadcast….<<

Clay Eals also is one of the main people responsible for THE West Seattle history book, West Side Story, if you didn’t already know that.

from Yahoo news last night, on the prospect that McCain will take Palin to the UN to meet some foreign dignitaries:

    >> One U.N. diplomat joked that a visit to the United Nations in New York would add one more trip outside the United States to Palin’s resume — a reference to the fact that the U.N. compound is technically not on U.S. territory.

That is some sick sh*t! Thanks for posting, JoB. The West Seattle location is actually right up the street from me. I’ll look for you guys. That’s my son’s birthday so I can’t do the protest as we have plans but I fully support your efforts! Mars Hill creeps me out in general. Sorry if that offends anyone but it really does feel cultish.

    Good work! Keep us posted!

General David Petraeus is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: “Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed.”

Bush“OH NO!” the President exclaims. “That’s terrible!”

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, “How many is a brazillion?”

    This is gonna be long….

First off, did you guys read the link? it talks about the war, dollar etc.

Oil companies have a profit margin of 10%, Google has a profit margin of 25%, Microsoft has a profit margin of 29%. It’s true that while the oil industry rakes in huge sums of cash in raw numbers, the profit margin for the S&P energy sector, at about 10%, is only slightly higher that the average for the S&P 500. Google, by contrast, has a profit margin of 25%, yet no one is calling for a special tax on search engines. Should we penalize a company because they make more money due to the price of their product on the open market going up? Should we penalize Apple because they run out of iPhones and demand drives the prices up? Oil trades in dollars across all markets, low dollar = high oil price. More demand from china/india/other developing economies = high oil price, assuming supply does not keep pace (I’m not a drill drill drill person, I think we NEED to get off oil for gasoline, and move to other sources of power, be it wind, solar, biomass, bio-coal, or any other clean energy. We will always need oil for other things, but gasoline is not one of them.)

Soy/corn discussion I’ve had with you before…the fed pays farmers not to plant land, and the corn/soy products being used for fuel are not the grade/quality that can be used for human consumption. If we moved production to switchgrass or poplar trees for cellulose production of ethanol would that change anything? We’re still using the land, just for a different crop, which wouldnt have any effect on the price of corn or soy. Driving factors for the price of corn and soy are Supply and demand, and the american dollar. As it happens demand for these crops is very high right now (exports to other countries have been exceeding expectations, Iran is a huge importer of our wheat), and supply is relatively low. (Although the past 2 months prices of corn, soy and wheat have been dropping)

Insurance companies I cant comment on, I dont know enough about them. I do know they raise prices to cover lawsuit costs…but yet I still think of them as a ripoff screwing the average worker. Have health care insurance premiums ever fallen? I really do want to know.

Pharm companies again I dont know much about…I know the cost of american products is higher, and covers the cost of research and development for new products…but the costs overseas are MUCH cheaper. Is it better to help us or other people? I’d say help the most people possible. But I’m no expert on them (im sure there are pharmacists on here though could speak about costs though)

I’m not for shipping of jobs overseas, but if I recall correctly, most of the overseas telephone centers has happened in the last 10 years or so. Was there de-regulation involved? I dont know, please enlighten me if you know of rules or regulation changes that brought this about.

Shareholder prices and profits have ALWAYS been in companies first thoughts, can you name a time when this isnt so? Sure there are exceptional companies in every case…Knoll is a carpet manufacturer that makes corn based carpet, completly recyclable. The building industry is one of the main polluters of the globe, more building/construction waste goes to landfills then any other type every year. Knoll has taken a step in the right direction, just like I hope many other companies will do. I cant tell you when de-regulation would be good or bad, I’m not an economist. But I do know hindsight is 20/20.

Congress has also spent a huge amount of time on Steroids in the MLB…what a rediculous waste of time and money…but again, the FOMC makes monetary policy decisions. Congress/pres can pass laws/regulations/deregulations, but the FOMC is controlling force regarding overall forces of inflation control and interest rates.

    Walfredo…

I’m not for tax cuts on the wealthy, I REALLY like Obama’s tax plan. If I made more then 250k a year, I may not like it as much, but I sure understand it. I SHOULD have the tax burden if I make 5x the average family.

I’m not for the war, never was. But its not a war about oil…its a war about faulty intelligence and revenge…which makes it all the more wrong. (Even if it was a war about oil its still very very wrong).

Personally, I’m sick of the fed bailing out companies that run themselves into the ground. Let them fail, yeah its gonna suck for LOTS of people, but companies brought it upon themselves. Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and several other financial institutions did not get caught up in the meltdown (until aquistions and other business deals). They were smart, they judged the risks and saw that they could get burned…others like AIG, Lehman, WaMu, Merril, Countrywide, etc saw the profits and said screw the risks. They are paying for it now.

I like most of Obama’s plans for the economy, but blaming bush for ALL of what we’re in today is just an easy way out. This has been in the works since probably before 1997. Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr, all had a hand in it. Maybe even before that…but I’m not old enough (or perhaps too old) to remember.

Who did everyone blame during the .com bubble/collapse? Did you still find a republican to blame? Bias is one thing, looking at the facts is a completly seperate issue.

Pet peeve time (not that anyone mentioned Iraq was a war for oil but still) Do people know where we import most of our oil from?

Canada (over 20%), then Saudi Arabia(14%), Mexico(14%), Venezuela (11%). Canada has been at the top of the list for a long time…if we wanted a war for oil…we’d have invaded our neighbor to the north.

    Yep, I’m going to hell…enjoy…

“And how are you going to be the vice president of the United States with five kids to take care of? She’s got a four-month-old of her own, she’s about to become a grandmother, and she’s partnered with John McCain. How many diapers can one woman possibly change?” –Jimmy Kimmel

“Sarah Palin’s been spending the last couple of days being briefed by advisers on what she needs to know to be John McCain’s vice president. That’s true. Yeah. Apparently, the first thing they taught her was CPR.” –Conan O’Brien

“This is true. In Alaska, a political activist is trying to get Sarah Palin to release over 1,000 e-mails that she’s withholding from public records. She won’t release them. Yeah. Apparently, several of the e-mails went unanswered and have the subject line ‘Mom, I need to talk to you about birth control.'” –Conan O’Brien

“Speaking of Sarah Palin, she said she’s a life-long member of the National Rifle Association. Which may explain why she’s in favor of shotgun weddings.” –Conan O’Brien

“And you’ve got to love this: Sarah Palin is an avid hunter. An avid hunter. A vice president who likes guns? Well, what could go wrong there?” –David Letterman

“Of course, now everyone’s digging into Sarah Palin’s past. There’s an old picture of Sarah Palin circulating on the internet right now, and she’s wearing a t-shirt that says, ‘I may be broke, but I’m not flat-busted.’ Yeah, John McCain was upset when he heard this and asked, ‘What’s the internet?'” –Conan O’Brien

“She does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska, right next door to Russia.” –FOX News Channel’s Steve Doocy, gushing over Palin’s qualifications, to which Jon Stewart quipped, “When you think about it, Alaska is also near the North Pole, so she must also be friends with Santa.”

“John McCain’s VP pick is the governor of Alaska, a unknown hockey mom named Sarah Palin that no one ever heard of. The only other job she had in politics was the mayor of a small town known as Wasilla, Alaska, and now she has the opportunity to be on a ticket opposite of Barack Obama, the first black man she’s ever seen.” –Bill Maher

    In her own words…..

“As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?” –Sarah Palin, in an interview with CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.”

“I’ve been so focused on state government, I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.” –Palin

“It’s great to see another part of the country.” –Palin, campaigning in Pennsylvania

A man wearing a Democratic pin walks into a bar and sees a picture of President Bush hanging behind the bartender. He calls the bartender over and says, “You should take that picture down. George Bush is a blight upon this nation. He should be impeached.”

The bartender, a life-long Republican, is completely offended. “Why you liberal piece of garbage. How dare you come into my bar and tell me how to run my business!”

“Listen, I’m the customer, so I’m always right.” the man says. “That picture offends me, so I want you to take it down.”

“That tears it,” the bartender says, “How would you like it if I came into your bar and told you what to do?”

“Well, you’d be the customer, so you’d be right,” the man says.

“Fine, then let’s switch places,” the bartender says.

So, they do. The man takes the bartender’s place behind the bar, and the bartender walks outside, waits a moment, and then comes back inside. The bartender sits at the bar and says to the bar, “You should take that pin off. The Democrats are destroying our country with their liberal agenda.”

“Sorry,” the man says, “but we don’t serve Republicans here.”
