This idea has been floating around the web for a few days – and I love it as a statement – just hope it doesn’t draw donations from Obama…

nuni, we bought a bug vacuum at one of those “as seen on tv” stores: http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/bugwand.html (warning, pictures of a spider at that link)

You can keep your distance from the bug, catch it, and then release it outside. As a person also afraid of spiders, this item is my best friend.

Well here is a good way to let her know:

The smallest donation is $5: The cost: priceless.

Make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s name.

When you make a donation to PP (secure site) in her name, they’ll send her a card stating the donation was made in her honor.

(Not that I’m into avian homicide, but this is like killing two birds w/ one stone: it financially supports beleaguered PP and protests the threat to female rights by one of our own.)

Here’s the link to Planned Parenthood’s website:

    http://www. plannedparenthood. org

Open ‘Donate’. Click ‘Honorary or Memorial Donations’.

Fill in your info and donation, then scroll down to ‘I would like to give to’: fill

in ‘Sarah Palin’ and use the McCain campaign headquarters address:

    1235 S. Clark Street

    1st Floor

    Arlington, VA 22202

Please consider forwarding this to others, and urge them to do the same.

    Viva la elección!

I am so ridiculously scared of spiders that my husband constructed a “spider-getter” for me. He basically cut a hole out of the bottom of a Tupperware container and then taped it to a 3 foot long wooden rod which I use to trap the spiders (without getting near them, of course) and then release them back to the outdoors. When that is unavailable I usually panic.

Thanks JenV! She’s looking for around $1k but said she would consider going higher for the right circumstances. What is the location? Is it a studio or 2 bed?

“Standing beside John McCain at her first town hall meeting since being named to the Republican ticket, Sarah Palin was asked what specific skills she would bring to the White House to “mitigate that concern” of her perceived lack of foreign policy experience.

“Well, I think because I am a Washington outsider that opponents are going to be looking for a whole lot of things that they can criticize and they can kind of beat the candidate here who chose me as his partner to kinda tear down the ticket,” Palin said. But as for foreign policy, you know I think that I am prepared, and I know that on January 20th if we are so blessed as to be sworn into office as your president and vice president, certainly we’ll be ready. I’ll be ready. I have that confidence. I have that readiness and if you want specifics with specific policy or countries, go ahead. You can ask me. You can play stump the candidate if you want to. But we are ready to serve.” “

““Give us some details and examples of your strategies and plan for economic empowerment for women,” she said.

McCain signaled for Palin to answer the question.

“Well first let me take a shot at that, and I’ll tell ya, I’m a product of Title IX in our schools, where equal education and equal opportunities in sports really helped propel me into the—I guess into the position that I’m in today where,” Palin said.

McCain then interjected, “Could I mention she was a point guard on a state championship basketball team.”

After the crowd’s applause died down, Palin continued: “Sports were very, very important to me growing up, you know just learning about self discipline and healthy competition and about what it takes to win and even how to graciously lose sometimes. But how to win, that’s what it teaches ya. Now, I was a product of Title IX where legislation allowed that equal opportunity. Now if we have to still keep going down that road to create more legislation, to get with it in the 21st century, to make sure that women do have equality especially in the work place, then we’re there because we understand that in this age we have all got to be working together. I respect you so much that you are a Democrat recognizing that John McCain and me as a team of mavericks understand where you’re coming from, and we can work together on these issues. But yup, equality for women, for all, that’s going to be part of the agenda and I thank you for that question.” “

What does high school sports experience have to do with economic empowerment for women. Huh?? If that’s the best she can do, we’re in big trouble.

Please Tina Fey, put that wig back on one more time, you couldn’t make this stuff up!

Ace – I just wrote a novel in repsonse to that, but decided otherwise.

So I’ll leave you with this, instead of a bunch of angry paragraphs.

Read this thread through again, you have read everything wrong.

edit: Also, do not put words in my mouth, or attempt to take what I say at face value without actually putting any effort into figuring out what I mean.

I’ve heard what beachdrivegirl is talking about called cradle-to-grave, or sometimes (more in line with the concept of sustainability) cradle-to-cradle–the idea being that in order to figure out the real environmental impact of something, you have to look at its entire lifecycle, from raw materials to manufacture to transport to use to disposal.

The problem is that it’s very difficult to measure this; some of the information is out there but can be tricky to locate because (so far) there are no easily accessible information resources (at least, that I know of, and I’m a professional librarian) that consumers can use to determine the real impact of our choices.

I use reusable bags that I happen to have acquired at professional conferences; the bags we get at American Library Association meetings are beach bag-sized and durable, and I can carry my groceries over my shoulder and fit a week’s worth into a single bag.

It’s not actually a great environmental move, though, because to get those bags I fly across the country twice a year, and air travel is one of the most polluting things an individual can do.

I recycle plastic bags when I do get them. It’s not hard.

Larry et al…I love it! Thank you so much for such an uplifting and inspiring song. I hope that it reaches the ears of many influential parties out there. Is there any way to be able to download the song itself? I would love to be able to put it on my IPod or on my site. Thanks again guys…hometown boys done good!!

WSMom- another good way to store pesto is ice cube trays – and then when it’s frozen you can transfer to baggies. One ice cube is approx one tsp of pesto.

Yah, my guess was no. 3, confusing Zapatero with Zapatistas. The man is not well.

Maybe he picked Palin because he wanted someone *he* could correct rather than someone who would correct him.

I’m in for the meet-up and second (third?) bowling.

I have not experienced the freeze in West Seattle, only other parts.

Agreed with RainyDay1235 as far as suggestions. Also, as JenV pointed out, knitting is a great way to meet. We also are going to need some male knitters at some point…

if you think the political landscape does not affect your life, it says a few things about you. You have not lived in a third-world country, you are very young, and you are not a minority. You are male, and you believe the mythology of capitalist society. Not criticisms, only observations. Keep your message #14 above and read it in about 30 years. You will chuckle, guaranteed.

In spite of a general lack of sunshine, I have a nice basil harvest this summer and I thought I’d share what has worked for me…

    1) Do not plant basil until the night time temperature is absolutely over 50 degrees, don’t even purchase it, just wait and be patient, I’ve killed more basil starts purchasing too early than I care to own up to.

    2) I found W. Seattle Farmers market basil starts are the best (there were actually 3 plants in each 4″ pot, so they were an excellent value), they also sold a purple basil variety which tastes a bit like anise and looks pretty mixed with the green basil on top of bruschetta

    3) Find the sunniest, warmest spot in your garden to plant your basil and water consistently. Basil likes it’s roots in sandy soil, but seems to appreciate compost at the top.

    4) Harvest part of your basil consistently throughout the summer, especially be vigilant in taking the tops off whenever you see flowering beginning to form. I can remove up to 3/4 of each plants leaves without killing the plant and it will grow back even more full of leaves as summer progresses

    5) Be prepared to make a ton of pesto over 2-3 harvests of the same plant. This year I am placing 2-3 tablespoons of pesto in sandwich baggies, twisting the air out, then placing the filled baggies into gallon size freezer bags. Last year I ended up tossing too much pesto when I couldn’t use the entire jar in one recipe. The baggies defrost very quickly and I’m pretty excited to see if this method works better for me.

I’m sure there are more experienced gardeners out there if other tips…please share as I’m anxious to learn what works for other West Seattle gardeners

JenV, thanks for replying. I tried to move my original post to the rants section but…never mind…long story. Anyway, that would be great to meet up with other WSBers. The only thing is my schedule is kinda tight right now so Sundays are pretty much the only days/evenings I would be avail (which is why I’m so happy the WS car show is this Sunday so I could enter my Dodge). If you put something together on a Sunday, count me in.

Ha – I read the freeze part too… I was GOING to write…

    >>I know what you mean about the ‘freeze’ – and I was born and raised here.

    Here are some suggestions:

Volunteer! Great way to meet friendly locals (WS food bank?)

Sunday Farmers Markets – chat up the vendors and patrons

Beveridge Place Pub – pony up to the bar

Attend any local community gatherings (we have a lot in High Point)

    Join a club: p-patch/cycling/dog/environment

Art Walk (Oct.9th): Stroll and converse with shop-owners and art lovers

    Attend next WSB meetup?

And we cant forget about Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel who even suggests that his own party “stop the nonsense” when it comes to Palin. And admits that Palin is a joke. Especially when looking @ her foreign policy experience. I have had my passport since I was 9…. I am 26. I had my passport for 16 years before she got hers. Seriously what a joke !

I’m not entirely sure why you would assume you would have to revert to coat hangers Jen, but all the Medical Practitioners who are certified to perform abortions that I’ve talked to (which has been quite a few, surprisingly) said even if it were made illegal the well being of their patients is far more important and they would perform the abortion anyways without a second thought. Or something to that extent (obviously they all didn’t say the same thing word for word)

And there are plenty of abortions in medcinal forms, for early early pregnancies.

I’m not sure if you actually read what I had to say, or if you even read what you quoted me saying.

But how exactly is indentifying that your individual need and happiness is superior to any mand made law giving up freedom? I’m certain it’s quite the opposite; recognizing freedom.

I don’t mean to be so abbrasive but if you’re going to bring up “political discussions”, you could atleast not make over-generalized statements in order to attempt to prove me wrong. Especially when it’s because you assume I’m naive given my age. At least that’s the impression you’re leaving.

Again this isn’t a discussion about abortion or anything like that but to clarify, even if abortions were made illegal it would NOT be difficult to find a practitioner or consultants to find medicinal or proper surgical abortions. And saying otherwise is absurd. Practitioners care about their patients, and bettering the lives of others, especially young people who have foolishly got themselves stuck between a rock and a hardplace. And to say they would give up on those people because of a silly law is ridiculous.

If anyone is giving up their freedom, it’s people who abide by laws that prevent them from being happy.

“I find that what is important to me is to wake each morning knowing i did my best the day before to make my life and the lives of those around me better and that today i will do what i can with whatever task comes in front of me…

doing what you can… when you can… for anyone you can… speaking up about what is important to you… to anyone who will listen… that’s what’s important to me.” –This comes before everything, before laws, before politics, before discussion about aboriton etc

Everything else is null before the pursuit of happiness, especially politics.

Again I do not mean to be so abrasive in this post, but your blunt views on medical practitioners is offensive to those of us who have actually asked them why they do what they do, and your post was an insult to Doctors who are Doctors to help people rather than to just make a lot of money.

Ok, so I’m not *actually* looking for someone to adopt my friend but I am trying to help her find a place to live. She’s struggling to find a rental because she had some credit problems between jobs. She now has a great job but a horrible living situation that has temporarily landed her on a friends couch. (Who hasn’t been there at some point?)

She also has a cat that she can not live without and prefers to find a single unit (no roomates) that’s month to month with utilities included.

Any ideas or options would be greatly appreciated!

when I was 20, I worked for two days as a telemarketer…or so I thought. It turned out we were calling to garner votes for a political race in Louisiana, of all places. Yes, I lived in Olympia at the time. It was horrifying. We had to call random people and ask them who they were voting for…and why they should vote for “our” candidate – who happened to be a good ol’ boy from the south, right wing, etc. I quit after two days because my stomach hurt to have those words come out of my mouth, and some of the things those ignorant people would say to me. A direct quote: “well of course I’m voting for XXXX- he’s the white one, isn’t he?” Sick and wrong.

Here’s an article about cell phones from Gallup. http://www.gallup.com/poll/110383/Does-Gallup-call-cell-phones.aspx

It seems to be younger voters that have only cell phones, and we all know how their voter turn-out tends to be…

For people who have lived here through multiple presidential elections, is the time difference a big deal? Is it accepted fact that calling the Eastern states in advance of polls closing on the West coast tends to discourage people from voting out here? Having lived in the Eastern and Central timezones my whole life I honestly never thought about that issue until now.
