I’ve had great experiences with Alki Lumber–from the first time I stopped by 25 years ago!!

As mentioned, it’s not a general hardware store, but I’ve relied on their assistance for a number of home projects.

The first time I stopped by (25 years ago), I needed some lumber and posts to build a fence for the back yard. I didn’t have a truck, just an old ford falcon. They helped me load up the car with half of the lumber, and then sent me off without paying even one dollar –I was told I could pay for everything “when I got back” for the second load.

Find me anyplace like that and I’ll have a hard time saying anything bad about them!

So what do you make of Sarah Palin canceling another appearance today? First Seattle on 9/24, now NoCal 9/25-9/26. Both credited to scheduling conflicts, but no other events on those specific dates have been announced. Is she going to be cramming for the debate? Are they afraid to put her back in front of live people? (though I think both were fundraisers, so probably friendly crowds) Some are speculating that repubs are gearing up for something “big” like replacing her…is that beyond the realm of possibilities?

i can donate 5 to planned parenthood and still have money left over for obama..

just think of all those cards floating into McCain headquarters and the fun the back end people at planned parenthood will have sending them.

that’s a better use of $5 than any other i can think of right now.

MrJT I just saw the link on their home page. Just click the arrow on their fron page news stories over to the right a time or two, and you will see that story headline, something to the effect of “Ballard church stirs up controversary…” or the like.

Joanne, great work. I am envious of your proactively ans strive for it in my own life. Thank you to all who will be protesting.

    Caducues…

I don’t know where you are getting your information, but it isn’t accurate.

It’s all well and good that people will say now that they would still do abortions should they become illegal… but the reality is likely to be much different when they are faced with penalties.

there were lot of docs back then who performed D&Cs for some patients… but when given a choice between going to jail because someone in their office told the wrong person …. and not doing abortions, most gave up the abortions.

they were sorry.. they felt bad.. but they had families.

when abortions were illegal, most that were performed by skilled medical practitioners weren’t

performed in doctor’s offices under ideal conditions… and if something went wrong the girl was on her own.

A very good friend of mine from a good family who had a medical practitioner perform her abortion at substantial cost… bled to death. We got her to the emergency room… but it was too late.

the police wanted to know who had done the abortion so they could prosecute for murder. We told them we didn’t know.

Had she lived, they would have prosecuted her.

and she was one of the “lucky” ones.

as for the rest.. well there’s always the hanger.

And for most, it was the hanger.

I don’t think you are naive because you are young.

I think you are just talking about something you know little about… with the confidence of the young that what they have can’t be taken from them.

I can understand that you have grown up in our society with it’s current freedoms and “guarantees” …. but having started life with them doesn’t mean you will get to keep them.

    That will take effort.

you could start by voting in this coming election against those who would destroy your freedom .. choice doesn’t mean much when someone else decides what’s best for you.

sorry if you think me rude. but i am not into revisionist history…

Cad, I just learned two weeks ago and I can make a scarf in a night. It’s great fun. As a matter of fact, that’s all I know how to make! Come to the next meet up and one of us can teach you. I learned in one night, and I am not all that coordinated.

We recently had our basement carpeted. We bought the carpet from the Environmental Home Store and had it installed by Fryer Knowles http://www.fryerk.com/

We thought their bid was reasonable and they did a superb job. We would highly recommend them. They picked up the order from the Home Store, as well.

How difficult is it to make a scarf? And what would be necessary to make one? I think it’d be really cool to make my own scarf, since I’ll be needing one soon, but I have zero knowledge of knitting :[

Sorry I missed it! Hopefully I will be able to make it next week. So was there a variety of needle workers? Or mostly knitters?

thanks, GHO. Actually the only reason life is bearable is because we did find the “moat trick” a while back and it is now how we feed and water the cats. works like a charm. it’s just the annoyance of ants on the kitchen sink, ants occasionally turning up in places like the bathroom, I don’t even want to know where Ant Central is, there’s probably some massive humongous central ant HQ that would be worth videotaping (and then running screaming in horror) if we could find it. No money for professional help (and we don’t do toxins anyway) so we continue with a little cinnamon here, a little mint there, a bit of lemon juice over there, the bowl moats, and hoping against hope it’s a REALLY REALLY cold winter that kills off the ants. – TR

    On science.. from Virginia Tech

A few months ago I wrote a letter with my advisor, Mike Hochella, to the president of Virginia Tech asking him to pledge Virginia Tech’s support for a debate on Science in this year’s election. Virginia Tech pledged its support along with several hundred other universities, companies, and NGOs.

The candidates did not accept the debate, but they have answered 14 top science questions submitted by the ScienceDebate2008 organization. If you would like to know where Obama and McCain stand on issues of energy policy, national security, economics in a science-driven global economy, climate change, education, health care, ocean health, biosecurity, clean water, space, stem cells, scientific integrity, genetics, and research the please check out the following link.

The two candidates’ full responses can be found here:

A couple of tips I found while trying to combat spiders last year (my first summer/fall in West Seattle):

    * Spiders that repeatedly build their webs in your way (like across a doorway) need to be relocated. I get a stick, catch the web and move the stick around until I also have the spider on the stick. Then I quickly go across the driveway or across the yard to a bush where their web will not bother me, and toss the stick there. So far it’s worked every time.

    * Indoors, you can keep spiders away using Pledge lemon furniture polish. No, really. Apparently spiders “taste” using their feet, and they do NOT like the taste of lemon furniture polish! I kept getting spiderwebs across my basement stairs and doorway but could never catch the spiders to relocate them. So I sprayed it down with Pledge, and voila! No more spiderwebs across my doorway!

    Hey JoB,

Where exactly will we be meeting? Also, do we need to get a permit or notify SPD that we plan on holding a peaceful protest? I’m in with you; babies shouldn’t be hit.

I don’t think that I have enough basil left to do pesto. I’m going to be experimenting this weekend with dehydrating some moisture rich herbs like my basil, mint & sage. I’ve also read that you can freeze whole basil leaves in ziplocks if you spread them out where they don’t all freeze together.

nuni, we bought a bug vacuum at one of those “as seen on tv” stores: http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/bugwand.html (warning, pictures of a spider at that link)

You can keep your distance from the bug, catch it, and then release it outside. As a person also afraid of spiders, this item is my best friend.

Well here is a good way to let her know:

The smallest donation is $5: The cost: priceless.

Make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s name.

When you make a donation to PP (secure site) in her name, they’ll send her a card stating the donation was made in her honor.

(Not that I’m into avian homicide, but this is like killing two birds w/ one stone: it financially supports beleaguered PP and protests the threat to female rights by one of our own.)

Here’s the link to Planned Parenthood’s website:

    http://www. plannedparenthood. org

Open ‘Donate’. Click ‘Honorary or Memorial Donations’.

Fill in your info and donation, then scroll down to ‘I would like to give to’: fill

in ‘Sarah Palin’ and use the McCain campaign headquarters address:

    1235 S. Clark Street

    1st Floor

    Arlington, VA 22202

Please consider forwarding this to others, and urge them to do the same.

    Viva la elección!
