credmondParticipantDo a Wiki search on spider and then follow the various links to the different kinds and their very cool differences. Spiders and the hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants) are – to me – the top insects in the food chain – predators. Read up on them and then watch them outside (or inside) and remember that they’re way more willing to get away from you than you are to get them off or outside. Not understanding their behavior is part of what has allowed them to become the monster insects they seem to be. I’ve got this huge, (large 4 gallon trash can size) wasp’s nest which I recently had vacated by a local who collects them for their venom (used by companies who create allergy tests). In talking with the wasp collector, I learned so much about them which was useful and fascinating – and I already was knowledgeable. They’re only bad guys if they scare you and not getting bit or stung is really easy once you understand a bit about their habits.
–
They eat the other bugs – these are the good guy bugs! I know butterflies and damsel flies are beautiful, but spiders are useful and can be beautiful in their own way. It takes 30 minutes for an orb-weaver to completely redo a complicated, 12-inch diameter aerial-hung web. Wasps and bees regularly fly miles from their nest (remember their scale, that would be hundreds of miles to us) and get back on time each end-of-foraging/pollinating-day. They’re really more fascinating than frightening, ‘least to me. And, of course, ants till the soil.
–
Full disclosure – I am in no way affected by stings or bites of these bugs (do avoid brown recluse and black widow) in other than a pain way – I don’t get a reaction. I’ve also only been stung a few times (except for the time I stepped on a ground hornet’s nest and that single incident resulted in two-weeks’ worth of cortisone shots) so I don’t have a very deep “bad” history with these creatures. Spiders are ugly, but they’re so fascinating to watch and hunt in some incredibly clever ways.

acemotelParticipantexactly, fulltilt. I’m always bewildered that people vote against their own best interest. Under Bush, the incomes of the middle class have actually decreased while the top 1 per cent of income earners have enjoyed the greatest prosperity known to man in the history of this country. Even more so the top 1/10 of 1 per cent. How can working people be opposed to unions?
OTOH, the richest man in the US is a liberal.

WSBKeymasterOverall (I should probably call an extension expert about this, might make a good storylet) there just seem to be more bugs etc. We still haven’t exorcised the ants. And we’ve seen the fruitflies. And bigger flies (got nontoxic – to humans – flypaper hangers for those). And moths. Or, maybe it’s just our little old house and the fact we deliberately have plants growing around and onto it like a jungle reclaiming its turf … TR

inactiveMemberI’m weighing in as totally pro-spider, except for the poisonous ones that will hurt somebody or when I walk through a web and get it on my arms or face; that IS kind of gross.
But, watch them weave a web sometime – I think it is so fascinating that all of that complex architecture is hardwired in that teeny tiny creature. Cool, to me. And, some spiders have very intricately patterned markings on them as well, not to mention their importance to our ecosystem.
HunterG – I like your cat’s style. My kitty hasn’t discovered spiders yet, but she’s a dedicated mouser in the winter. Off-season, she has been working 24/7 on the fruitfly infestation in my house. What is with the FRUIT FLY’s this year????? No matter how much I clean produce, they manage to stowaway somewhere. How do they get in? Fruit flies are my insect gripe….they have no particularly importance within the ecosystem. Do they? Ugh.

FullTiltParticipantI have realized something over the past few weeks after reading about polls on the election and hearing quotes from middle America. This country is chocked full of a lot of stupid people. A lot. A freakin huge amount. We are buffered here on the coast, as people on the east coast are. The rest of the country, seems to be about 50% morons.
People vote how they think they are going to be. They think they are going to be rich at any moment, so they vote with the wealthy 1%. There is about as much chance of most of them joining the upper crust as there is of me looking Brad Pitt.
Look at when Al Gore ran a populist campaign, he could not get the vote of uneducated white men, even though he was talking directly to them. The estate tax, which is aimed at the Uber Wealthy failed because people really thought that any moment they were going to be stinking rich. This people are ignorant. Many people vote as if they are just pre rich. They may be shopping at Sam’s Club now and eating at Apple Bee’s, but any moment their ship is going to come in. This is what we are all told. That any one in this country can pull themselves up by there boot straps and become a gagillionaire. That is BS. Chances are you are going to die in the social economic class you where born into.
We envy the wealthy, and look up to them. We don’t want to penalize them. Hell, we want to be just like them some day. Why the hell would we pass a tax that is going to hurt ourselves when we become rich. Doesn’t matter if you are in hock up to your eye lids now, you must think of the future.

I’m still getting over having seen him make a cameo at the Dr. Demento performance we attended downtown earlier this summer. Since he wrote what’s considered to be the definitive biography about Steve Goodman, he was there to help introduce a funny Goodman video. Team WSB went to Dr. D not expecting to write about it here, since it wasn’t in WS, but because Clay suddenly appeared, we did:

The Democrats denounced it on the grounds of “affordable housing” regulation for poorer recipients would be more difficult.
“Blocking it” wasn’t mentioned in your link.
Considering the Republicans controlled congress baffles me the Dems could block it alone.

September 18, 2008 at 5:47 am #639351mellaw6565MemberJust wanted to give an update: Pamela has graciously arranged for Chiquita to receive her vaccinations and then be taken to the vet’s office tomorrow to be spayed. She estimates the costs at between $65 & $100.
There have been many of you here and on another yahoo group site who have expressed interest in helping in some way – either by fostering/adopting or financial support. Thank you for your willingness to help.
Joyce, who is still desperately searching for her chihuahua “Taz” lost several days ago, has continued to foster her. As I explained in my OP, Joyce is visiting from Arkansas and staying with her daughter on Alki. Joyce recently lost her husband of many years in April and now has lost her closest companion, Taz, so this has been a very difficult time for her. She says that Chiquita has been a source of comfort for her these last few days and she is still considering whether to keep her and take her back to Arkansas. However, she has a limited income and cannot afford to reimburse Pamela for the vet expenses (she already has a carrier and plane ticket for the dog – she had it for Taz, whom she has lost).
I’ve asked Joyce to give the issue some serious thought while Chiquita is away at the vet’s office and see if this is really what she wants, even if Taz is found. If so, I told her that there would be a way for us to help her reimburse Pamela so she wouldn’t have to worry.
In any event, I know that if Joyce wants to keep her, then I think maybe some of us could come up with enough to reimburse Pamela. Seems like Joyce and Chiquita have had enough trauma in their lives lately and maybe the kindness of a few strangers is just what the higher power intended in all of this.
I’ll give everyone an update on Friday once the medical procedures are finished and Joyce has had some time to make a decision.
miwsParticipantI’ll take the onions, Jan. Well, as long as they weren’t fried with the liver!

September 18, 2008 at 4:42 am #588090Topic: Voter Registration Event 9/27 and 9/28
in forum PoliticsklangMemberI am looking to arrange a couple of Voter Registration events the weekend of the first debate (9/27 and 9/28). Ideally, I’d love to get a location setup at Westwood Center and somewhere in White Center-area.
I’m looking for folks to staff the event in shifts AND I’m looking for local businesses with high traffic on weekends who wouldn’t mind a table in their store OR right outside for us.
Full Disclosure: I’m an Obama supporter and an event sign up is on the barackobama site for events in 98126 BUT my goal is to sign up new voters regardless of who their vote will go to.
Please contact me at khlang71@hotmail.com OR sign up at barackobama.com (events) if you want to help out OR if you would like us at your business registering voters!
