roundthesoundParticipantI went with some friends to Ballard a few weeks ago on a Sunday and we went to the farmers market, the beach at golden gardens, and cupcake royal. I couldn’t stop thinking to myself, why did I even leave WS?
Anything Ballard can do West Seattle does better!

JeannieParticipantThe Stranger loves its little controversies. And they can’t write a paragraph without a “shocking” four-letter word. Hipper-than-thou attitude is actually not very hip at all. And the writing is abysmal. If they didn’t have their “escort” ads in the back, they wouldn’t survive.

JenVMemberand this would be why I hate the Stranger. Hipster bullsh*t. Good, keep those idiots out of WS. We don’t need them and their trucker hats and fake blue collar ‘tudes here.
remember the article written by some B on the Stranger blog- trying to take the bus, and she freaked out when the bus started heading to West Seattle? Like it was the ends of the earth. HAH!
I wish we would secede….

TraciMemberThis has become almost funny where I live, in the Luna Park apts.
THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.
In the shower, curtains, shoes, ceiling, hanging so that I run into them, all over the place outside.
I sprayed for them once and felt horrible about it, so now I just see them and say hi. If they’re talking trash to me I move them outside.
Also my cats are useless… “look lady, this doesn’t look like tuna to me so I’m not eating it.”
September 18, 2008 at 11:53 pm #588099Topic: West Seattleites are all A-Holes…
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsvillagegreenMemberaccording to The Stranger. Anyone read the new ‘Back to school’ issue directed at new transplants? In the ‘Everything you need to know about the city’ section they give a brief description of each neighborhood. Here’s WS’s blurb:
“West Seattle. Nothing to see here (except for Alki Beach). These assholes tried to secede a few years ago. We should have let them.”
I’ll admit WS wouldn’t be high on my list of places to check out if I was a new student at the UW or SU, but ‘assholes’? Come on.
As The Stranger is a proponent of bars and getting drunk and the PBR swillin’ kids these days like to pretend they have a connection to the blue collar working class, maybe they should encourage them to actually experience the real thing down in White Center (instead of the fake dive bars on Capitol Hill). Now that would be truly educational.
As for WS seceding from Seattle, I know there was a movement for that back in the 90’s. Anyone know exactly what that was all about?

acemotelParticipantreplacing her? Please, god!
(not that I would vote for them anyway. but I hate how pathetic the election process is -for US citizens, and to the rest of the world -with such weak candidates. Are these the the best and brightest the Republican party has to offer?)
September 18, 2008 at 11:36 pm #637135In reply to: Transportation Woes
WSBKeymasterOK, while I wait for double clarification from the Metro contact, here’s what he basically told me:
They added two Metro buses each to West Seattle HS and Garfield HS routes. However, that ends on Sept. 30th because Metro doesn’t have the money.
Sealth, they had no buses left to add.
The district is supplementing (as mentioned above) with yellow buses and evaluating overall strategy.
And I have a very long explanation (which I will include in the story so that those interested can read it) about how they got into this mess, gas prices putting more people on buses than they expected etc. etc. etc.

JenVMemberCad- definitely go to Seattle Yarn – they are very helpful. If you want to purchase your own needles, they will have you pick out your yarn first. I tend to like the larger needles for now, they are easier to handle with the bulky yarn I like. I really like the baby alpaca – it’s a little pricey, but so soft and cozy.

credmondParticipantIn response to the original question: Are there more spiders this year. I actually think not. 2004 was a very, very big year in my yard for wolf and orb weavers (and the occasional hobo and other spindly types). 2005, not so much the orb weavers but lots of wolfs and a few new species I noted. 2006 and last year were somewhat less in overall spider population, I believe, and 2008 is a good year but not up to even 2005 standards. Anyone who moved here after 2005 might think this year was a big year.

I’ve got this peculiar cove window area in my upstairs office with two windows which open full (more like glass doors) and spiders of all kinds find their way inside (as do moths, dragonflies, crane flies (I still call them mosquito hawks), bees, wasps and other flying insects and the occasional lady or sir bug (black wings with red dots). The spiders try and leave their egg sacks in the furthest-to-reach three-way corner of this area. On occasion I’m not overly vigilant and an egg sack will start hatching and dozens to hundreds of super tiny (and therefore super cute) little spiderlings can be seen marching across the ceiling at that area.
–
I use a dustbuster portable vacuum to remove all these bugs. I figure the predators will eat the others inside my little vacuum terrarium and – in between cleanings of the vacuum case – live out a fairly natural life. The vacuum case now has about a dozen little webs inside it. The bugs can’t escape and I’m not actually killing them (well, so to speak). Maybe that would be a better solution – the vacuum actually sucks them in so you don’t even have to get that close with the nozzle.
–
The bigger hymenoptera creatures I try and snare with a Kleenex ™ and release them outside. The lady and sir bugs I pick up with my fingers and the crane flies I grab with my hand (they fly so slowly and erratically that it’s kind of a game).

WSBKeymasterAs a longtime political producer/reporter during my other gigs, here is what would be my pure speculation: They’re not going to waste time on the bluest of the blue states (us, California qualify). They’re going to focus on winning the swing states and spend all their time there between now and November. Remember, there are a whole lot of unannounced events – like mega-fundraisers. Just my speculation without even having read a lot of today’s non-West Seattle-related headlines.

biankatParticipantHere’s one for the annals. I was enjoying the last swallow of coffee at work this morning and felt something flow in with the caffeinated goodness. I initally thought it might have been some grounds, and reached to my lips to remove. Nope – drowned spider, prolly slightly smaller than a dime with its legs extended. YUM! He had to have crawled into the cup at some point because I had washed it out before using.
mellaw6565MemberCNN is now doing the “Poll of Polls” – now isn’t that interesting? Doesn’t seem very scientific – just really an average.

carrieannMemberWe had a break from the ants last Summer, but they were back in full force this time around. And there are definitely a lot of spiders this season. After having a little luck (though not enough for our temporary basement dwellers who moved in a couple months ago) with the traps I picked up at the Junction True Value, I finally signed up for a year-long plan with Orkin. In addition to treating for other creepy crawlies, the traps they use for the spiders contain peanutbutter and vinegar. Apparently this attracts spiders? (Attracts me, too. Mmm Phad Thai with peanut sauce.) Who’d have guessed!

JennyMemberFair & balanced: Here’s President Ford telling us how he’s going to “Whip Inflation Now!” THAT really worked.

Reaganomics (as was Thatchernomics) was truly revolutionary. The powers-that-be in the ’70s had no clue, on either side.
It’s reminiscent of the Great Depression: FDR’s actions dragged the Depression on for TEN FRIGGING YEARS – but he was only doubling down on Republican Herbert Hoover’s earlier clueless reactions to what started out as merely a sharp recession.

JennyMember> it’s easier and more self satisfying to make fun of Carter…
In this case I wouldn’t callit making fun of him. It’s more like reliving a painful memory. It’s instructive. Did you watch them?
Anyway, in the MEOW speech he predicted we’d run out of gas by 1982.
Oops, I’m sorry, I see my link to the MEOW speech was wrong. Here it is:
Here’s the “Crisis of Confidence” speech:
BTW, it turns out these are shorter versions of the full speeches, from the Miller Center’s extensive archive of presidential speeches. It looks like they have audio recordings starting with FDR, and videos starting with JFK. This is going to be addicting…
