Schmitz Park Elementary is gathering candy from their students and trying to get 1,000 lbs in to give:

“Halloween Candy Collection – November 1-8

Classrooms will be collecting candy for our candy drive starting Nov.1, the day after Halloween. Last year we collected over 650 lbs our goal this year is 1000lbs!! I know we can do it! Just bring in SOME of the candy you collected trick or treating and Nov 8 we will weigh and see what we have. IF we reach our goal there will be an ALL SCHOOL surprise!!!”

I’ve also heard of operation Gratitude which sends some to our military around the world.

Looks like local dentists are helping out with that and will even pay you for it!

The huge, yearly Albert Lee Appliance Warehouse sale is on this weekend! That is where we have gotten all of our appliances for the past 8 years, both building a new home and for a rental property.

I am one who was harmed years go by the supposedly harmless HRTs, which were supposed to be “good for me”. Little did I know that there was a side effect that caused me to be hospitalized for 4 months, and almost proved fatal twice. It is now on the label, albeit way down on the list. And even after that illness, my doc still tried to get me to take it, because it was “good for my heart”. Then it wasn’t good for my heart, just the opposite. So, I’m all for disclosure. I am not a scientist. I don’t know more than some of you about all the studies, etc. But I do know that I want a choice. I don’t care if you want to GMO your products…go ahead…but tell me. I don’t care if you GE your products…go ahead…but tell me. And let me decide whether I want to use that product or not.

    JoB,

You are correct re Bt and I initially had the same thought as you. But what I think blbl is saying is that it is hypocritical that the consumer can be exposed to the exact same Bt proteins, however if the bacterial spores are sprayed topically they are organic and awesome but if the plant makes the proteins by itself, they are evil/scary GMOs.

    blbl..

i checked the Oregon Tilth organic certification website to find out what they had to say about Bt since their standards are considered pretty universal .. and found this..

yes, Bt is used topically in certified organic farming

but only the use of only non GMO Bt

    http://tilth.org/files/r-e/nrcs-ot-cross-training-2009/general-information/can-i-use-this-pesticide/at_download/file

i am not sure where you got the idea that plants genetically modified to produce their own Bt (GMO)

or GMO Bt are still considered organic… but my basic research indicates that you are wrong.

btw.. a quick primer for those who have no idea what Bt is.. or why they might care…

Kevin: The Conner Edwards from the Freedom Foundation (as suggested by For Liberty) has been doing an amazing job at canvasing city officials with questions about this case. They dug up critical contract details that shows exactly where the Seattle Municipal Court failed to act. The problem we are having is that we get councilman and other officials calling the court, they tell them that it’s already been settled.–The hell it’s been! I’ve still got the $8,000 debt and court actions against me.

I was hoping the mayors office would try and do something about it since they have been receiving tons of calls. So far, the Mayor has been ineffective at solving this issue.

singularname: Anyone’s welcome to come and show their support. The next court action is simply to change the heading of the court papers so that it’s easier for them to garnish my own income. Probably not much I can do, but I will object anyway.

For Liberty: Our next court date is this coming Monday 10/28 at 8:45 AM – King County District Court West – 516 3rd Ave, RM E-301. I am not sure which judge although Judge Kato was the judge that issued the default judgement lien against us.

I will try to get in touch with Albert Shen and Mike O’Brian. Shen seems to be a better fit for solving small business issues which Seattle desperately needs right now.

Also, thanks again for the Liberty Foundation suggestion, I think we might have just moved out of the country if it wasn’t for them.

Good idea, let us know if you have a court date that we can attend to support you. Which judge in the Seattle Municipal Court granted a judgment lien using only Facebook posts as evidence? Were they obliged by some weird law, or did they make a blatantly unjust ruling? Re: this year’s election, Albert Shen is campaigning as a voice for small business owners and wants to get rid of bureaucratic obstacles for small businesses; he also wants to shift away from using parking enforcement as a revenue generator – might be interesting to ask him as well as his opponent Mike O’Brien for their opinions on your situation.

I called the blog today informing them of the BEAUTIFUL BLUE parts of the building had become and they said going to see it was on their agenda…

It looked really nice, albeit far from finished when I was there around noon, so I think I’ll make my way by there again tomorrow for another look.

you make a lot of assumptions about where i shop. The checkers at my local QFC know me well enough to ask about my garden and my dogs…

and i am a regular visitor to my local safeway.

i haven’t been in our local Fred Meyers since they posted the sign looking for scabs.. but i shop generally there as well.

I also visit the canned foods outlet in Burien and make a monthly trip to Albertsons… not to mention the products i can only find at Thriftway.

I am a pretty equal opportunity shopper.

You can try to paint me as an elitist if you want, but first you might ask yourself where exactly is it that you think i stand in the aisle reading labels if i only shop at the Farmer’s market and PCC?

you do know that you can buy both local and organic at your local grocer, don’t you? if not, it’s time you checked them out. demand really has made a difference in selection.

    blbl..

tell me how labeling is going to have an impact on small farmers who are currently fighting in the courts for the right to grow non-GMO labeled seed in their fields?

have you visited our local farmer’s market lately? Business must be good because there are now 2 egg vendors and more than 2 meat vendors and ….

    that’s healthy competition.

When you have a choice, you can choose to spend more for food you believe to be healthier for you and your family…

the impact of I522 is far more likely to be felt by agribusinesses that fear they will lose business due to the choices consumers will make due to labeling than on small farms who have already figured out that their ability to compete requires competing in a specialized market.

Blbl, you have exactly zero data that would indicate that the costs associated with potential relabeling would result in any bankruptcies. If you or anti-522 Supporters did, it would be plastered all over the place. It isn’t, and you don’t.

blbl, I agree with you in as much as labeling would not be consistent with scientific findings, and would be perceived as little more than a scare tactic.

However, there are some compelling arguments that listing GE ingredients might be helpful to some people. For them, doesn’t matter if there is a health issue or not. It’s that they don’t like the method, and don’t want to promote it. They feel they have the right to know what’s in the food they buy. That’s not an unreasonable thing to want.

Ultimately, the law should be judged on whether or not it will do what it claims it will do. The I-522 campaign claims the law would give consumers the information they need to make an informed choice. This is false. The law would NOT give consumers any useful information.

So even if you are in favor of labeling for GE, you should vote against I-522. It simply will not deliver what it promises.

I might take you up on that, pennidogg – i’ll hold on your email. It cleans up nice – i actually have two – one was a back-up as i said. i make smoothies everyday. i’ll try the back-up tomorrow to see how it does.

Thanks all for the glowing recommendations. Have heard very little to discourage this direction. just need to explore the best source. costco.com has it with probably all the accessories as a package. BBandB has it and i can like use the 20%off coupons that are perpetually in my mailbox. i’ll look at craigslist but that has gotten a little more sketchy than i’m comfortable with. Ebay might be ok, but shipping will be a lot i should think.
