wow…guilty pleasures…first…on TV..Prison Break..yeah, I’m probably the only one who watches in SEattle – lol..and I’ll go with the cheese and warm squishy bread (or hard cold crackers)…but the cheese has to be Beecher’s Flagship. At 16 bucks a lb., it doesn’t happen often (they make great mac and cheese , too).

Oh, and a really big container of garlic mashed taters and gravy from Met Market Deli…yummmmmmmm….

My guilty pleasure is watching The Daily Show & Colbert Report on my computer while checking the WSB. I also am crazy about the show “Lost” and spend way too much time reading Lost blogs and updates.

Then there’s also my daily home brewed mocha espresso’s and occasional stops at Bakery Neauveau(sp) for amazing croissants that taste just like Paris.

A study based on seven US polls found that 80% of FOX news viewers had misperceptions about the IRAQ war compared to 23% of people who got their news from NPR/PBS.

Another study found that viewers of The Daily Show/ Colbert report gave more correct answers on current affairs than FOX news viewers. Pretty bad when fake news is better than “real” news.

I was following JanS’s link to McCain when i found this… on Geraldine Ferraro…

“In a letter to Clinton, first reported by CNN, Ferraro says:

“Dear Hillary, I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what’s at stake in this campaign. The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you. I won’t let that happen. Thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do to make this a better world for my children and grandchildren. You have my deep admiration and respect, Gerry.”

The back-and-forth between two Democratic trailblazers — Obama, seeking to be the nation’s first black president, and Ferraro, who in 1984 was the first woman on a major party presidential ticket — continued for a second day as they appeared on network and cable morning news programs.”

these aren’t Obama suporters.. this is Obama…

This is what she actually said…

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Ferraro said she stands by her assertion that Obama’s success in the Democratic campaign is due “in part” to his race.

Obama, however, said that if someone in his campaign had suggested that Hillary Clinton “is where she is only because she is a woman” she would be offended.”

Notice that Geraldine Ferrao says “in part” and Obama responds with “only because”…”

Geraldine never said or implied that his success was due only to his race.. but that is how he is replying to the comment.

he is making this a racist issue.. not her.

“Ferraro, who was Walter Mondale’s vice presidential running mate, said Wednesday that her remarks were not racist and had been taken out of context.

“I was talking about historic candidacies and what I started off by saying (was that) if you go back to 1984 and look at my historic candidacy, which I had just talked about all these things, in 1984 if my name was Gerard Ferraro instead of Geraldine Ferraro, I would have never been chosen as a vice presidential candidate,” Ferraro said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “It had nothing to do with my qualification.”

Ferraro said she has a 40-year history of opposing discrimination of all kinds, including race, and that she was outraged at criticism of her remarks by David Axelrod, Obama’s chief media strategist, because he knows her and her record.

“David Axelrod, his campaign manager, has chose to spin this as a racist comment… ”

She’s goes on to comment that this is one of his campaign strategies… it is not the first time he has done this…

and… it worked taking comments out of context with Bill Clinton… Bill backed off. I don’t think Geraldine will.

In fact, i think this is precisely why she left the Clinton campaign.. so she would have the freedom to defend herself against that sort of attack.

In this case, there is a great deal of difference between what was actually said and the innuendo that was implied…

I would say who is really making race an issue? .. but i don’t think it’s that exactly.

i think he is using the same political ploy that McCain used when caught with the lobbyists… misdirection inspiring indignation creating support for the underdog.

good campaign strategy if you realize that is all it is…

and if you don’t happen to be Geraldine Ferraro with your reputation slurred as a result of that strategy.

    Let me get this straight:

    1. Hillary can do no wrong.

    2. If Hillary does wrong, see #1.

    3. It’s racist to support Barack because he’s black, but it’s empowering and not at all sexist to support Hillary because she’s a woman.

    4. Fearmongering is OK if Hillary does it; when Barak protests, he’s a big ole weenie who should toughen up.

    5. Hillary is always a victim of hate when she is criticized. There is no fair criticism of her. (See #1 again.)

    6. Barack is a big ole meanie for standing up for himself.

    7. It’s cool to count your spouse’s experience, your teen job in the mailroom, your lemonade stand at age 5, and your twenty minutes at the nonprofit sector as “experience in public service”.

    8. Olbemrann is gonna kick Hillary’s butt tonight. (this one is actually true.)

Do I have it straight now?

Interesting when someone (like Ferraro) says something bigoted or dismissive or disrespectful and then tries to convince us they’re just big brave truth tellers, or ‘saying what everyone is thinking.’ Yuck.

When people talk about race or sex in this election, I start looking for shag carpeting and faux wood paneling, because it seems to me those people are stuck in 1972 (or even earlier.) Race and sex are part of all our identities but in 2008, they really should be neither dealbreakers nor dealmakers. IMHO.

Kayleigh: I too am a Obama supporter. I believe he is the best person to inspire and lead our nation out of the mess the Republican has party has driven our country into. There were times, especially after reading JoB’s musings, that I felt a tinge of regret that Hillary hadn’t done a better job grabbing my imagination, as I have tremendous respect for her intelligence and tenacity. As a Obama supporter, I have felt the need in talking with friends to defend Clinton (using JoB’s talking points), because if she somehow does end up with the Democratic nomination it is imperative that our nation come together to put a Democrat into office. For me it is as simple as that. We cannot have another four years of business as usual. I believe our children’s future depends on this.

On a different note, I’m curious what you make of the Newsweek article which says that Hillary’s best case delagate count scenario will in the end put her behind Obama. I’m trying to understand why she is going negative to continue her campaign given the math. This seems counter-intelligent. Any thoughts?

People rave about La Rustica, including my husband. Imagine his surprise when he wanted to go out to dinner, suggested La Rustica, and I hesitated. I sincerely apologize if this offends anyone who loves La Rustica (and I know there are many), but I just don’t see the appeal. I’ve been there about five times now. I don’t like the crammed-in feeling from the crowded tables. The last time we went there, we could barely have our own conversation; the people at the closest two tables were speaking normally, but they were literally at our elbows. And, despite all the people, it always seems to be cold in there. I’ve never ordered anything there that has transported me into raptures of yumminess. WHat am I missing?

Another recommendation for “Liberal Bias” — or, balanced POV (have to agree with JoB’s hubby here):

Rachel Maddow on Air America (KPTK 1090 here). She’s on from 3 – 6 (last hour is new — call-in), also podcast, probably on satellite. She starts her program every day with *news* from Iraq — something that is not always covered by the mainstream or right-wing media.

She’s also an MSNBC political analyst, frequently on Keith Olbermann and, paired with Patrick Buchanan, on their election night coverage.

    if there was no hillary..

i would probably be as excited about Obama as those who post here.

He is charismatic.. he inspires hope… what’s not to like?

but there is hillary.. and while he inspires hope… i feel she can deliver hope… to those who need it most.

It’s not often i am willing to attach my heart so firmly to a dream… but there it is.

I am as passionate about the real change i think a woman who has learned to work the system… and reach across party lines to build consensus on issues that truly matter… this woman… can actually bring to the world… as those who support Obama are about him.

I am passionate about what she has shown me she is capable of doing.. not what she promises to do.

It’s not Saint Hillary… I don’t idealize the woman.. but i truly respect her. It has not been easy to get where she is. No other woman has ever managed to do so in the entire history of our nation. and if she fails, it will be a long time before another does.

I know how quick many of you are to instantly villianize her… and that truly saddens me. I am appalled at the total lack of respect women (of any generation) are willing to show a woman who has worked so hard to get where she is.

It is not ok to call her names that you wouldn’t want applied to yourself or your mothers just because she has been made the target of one of the vilest hate campaigns ever.

If Hillary can be treated that way by the national press… and an entire nation can be taught that it is ok to continually scrutinize and look for any excuse to dismiss her.. then so can we.

Yes, i know this is politics. But if those of you who are so continually offended at any offense to Obama actually turned the same critical eye to what you think is ok when applied to Hillary.. i think you would be appalled.

Ask yourself what she did to “earn” such abuse… and all you will be able to come up with are characterizations fed to you by the evening news… she’s shrill… she’s a ballbuster… he husband cheated on her and she backed him up… she wouldn’t listen to her “betters” in congress who wanted to kill the health bill she brokered… she dared to broker anything….

the truth is.. she stepped above herself. She took on more as a first lady than people were comfortable with. (she didnt’ stick to decorating and good works.. and when she turned to them she was lampooned for her efforts) and then she forgave the “rotten bastard” that half the country wasn’t able to forgive.

She is one of those women who broke through barriers and made it possible for all women to do the things they take for granted today. And some of those same women find it impossible to give her credit for even that.

If Hillary was male and had never been married to bill.. she would be the candidate that broke through barriers.. who idealistically stuck to her goals of bettering life for ordinary Americans.. who survived and surmounted public scandal. someone who would inspire hope.

I don’t expect to change your minds. you are as driven by your dream as i am by mine.. but I do expect you to stop and consider why you think you can only defend your dream by destroying her.

And to ask yourself if that is really in your best interests.

daughter gave me some chocolate necco wafers for my BD today…sat and ate them going back and forth between CNN and MSNBC….when this is all decided on the dem side, I certainly hope neither dem candidate has given “election fodder” to Mr. McCain. He WILL pay attention, and dish accordingly after the convention has decided our candidate (or whatever does).Whoever we’re for now, we have to be ready to back that candidate no matter what, be it Hill (or as a friend calls her “Hillbilly”), or Barack. Neither needs to give Mr. McCain ammo…lest we get shot in our foot one more time…

I liked life much better without the politcal coreect crap that goes on today. More is celebrated for Quanza, and other faiths from third world countries than Christian holidays, they have all but just been banned becuase god forbid that mention GOD!! Being told to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas at our kids school was outragous, we are Christians not from Africa!! People come to the U.S. and never learn to speak English, to survive we would all have to learn to speak Spanish, or any other language. It is pure ignorance.

Wearing baggy pants wi sloppy dressing. Wearing tennis shoes in a professional office like real estate, a bank, or anyother professional office other than an office located in Harbor Island in a machine shop is sloppy, sorry but is shows you don’t care, regardless if your boss allows you to it is not professional. The whole dress code of professional dressing has been gone for years now and I rarely see a man in a suit and tie or a woman in heels and a skirt or dress downtown and that was the norm back 7 years ago when I worked, we cold not show our elbows as we had to wear a jacket with our suits or skirts/dresses.

I will never be sold that Pit Bulls are kind dogs, they are a very aggressive breed. As for the jerk who owned those pit bulls in the lastest local attack he deserves alot more than a $1,000 fine which he probably won’t pay. He will simply get another dog train it to be mean and another innocent person or animal will get bitten.

As for the Spanish people, at our daughters school there are a huge number of Spanish families and I will say they are the most friendly, down to earth and eager learners of English to better themselves and well as the kids life. I would love to live in Montana or Idaho, that way my husband coukd go derr, and elk hunting all his wanted. We would love another mount on the wall!!

Pit Bulls and dog bite related human fatalities

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association in September, 2000 reports that in the 20 years studied (1979 to 1998) “Pit-bull type dogs” and Rottweilers were involved in one half of approximately 300 dog bite related fatalities in the US[3]. Another study of American and Canadian dog bite-related fatalities from September 1982 to November 2006 produced similar results, reporting that pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes were responsible for 65% of fatal dog attacks. [4] This study also noted: “Of the breeds most often involved in incidents of sufficient severity to be listed, pit bull terriers are noteworthy for attacking adults almost as frequently as children.”

    [edit] Pit bulls as pets

In many shelters across the United States, pit bulls or dogs that appear to be pit bulls comprise a large portion of the shelter’s population and may be destroyed due to the stigma associated with the breed (or because of overcrowding). [5]

Nevertheless, they can and often do make wonderful family pets. Known to generations of American children as the dog from the Little Rascals and Our Gang shows, the pit bull has frequently been among America’s most popular dog breeds. The American Temperament Testing Society gives the American Pit Bull Terrier breed a “pass” percentage of 84.1%. The average of all breeds is 81.5%. [6]

Although friendliness and tolerance towards humans are traits of the breed [11], there are, as in any breed, those that are dangerous toward humans. It is the owner’s responsibility to be in total control of his dog, and it is the owner who, through intentional mistreatment or neglect, is frequently responsible for pit bull bites. Many attacks by other dog breeds are misclassified as “pit bulls” by media reports.[7]

Regardless of who they are, any owner of a pit bull must train the dog well. Lack of proper socialization and strong training can result in a dog with aggressive tendencies. Under the care of an overly-permissive or uneducated owner, pit bulls (or any other large breed) can become very dangerous dogs. [8]

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published a study concerning deaths from canine attacks in 2000. [34] According to the study, between 1979 and 1998, one-third of all fatal dog attacks were caused by Pit Bull type dogs. The highest number of attacks (118) were by Pit Bull type dogs, the next highest being Rottweilers at 67.

A followup to the study published in 2000 by Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association suggested that “generic non–breed-specific, dangerous dog laws can be enacted that place primary responsibility for a dog’s behavior on the owner, regardless of the dog’s breed. In particular, targeting chronically irresponsible dog owners may be effective.”[35]

Just found this information online to further insight some folks on this blog. I am looking for information on other breeds as well, I am not singlely out pit bulls, I am merely providing information that anyone online could obtain.

My little gray cat Roscoe disappeared on the evening of Feb 23 (Sat) near the foot of the Thistle Street steps. He is small (6-7 lb) and completely gray with yellow-green eyes. Sven:

Thanks for the reply and also for your hard work. I suspect most of my criticism should be directed at the school board and it’s top heavy administrative staff but they are not concerned with anything but the WASL and NCLB as far as I can tell and they don’t seem to have much choice in that either.

Let’s talk about another issue that also seems to have taken over education. It does not seem to be a new thing here either.

    Group work.

Why is group work and social conformity stressed so strongly in elementary school in Seattle?

Apparently science is one of the subjects that requires “group” work in that groups or teams are required to do the work rather than individuals being graded on what they learn. Those with poor social skills seem to be graded more on how they cooperate with others than on learning basic science.

This reminds me of the 1920’s focus on job readiness rather than learning to learn theory that replaced it. Is the “create compliant worker bees” theory back again?

Maybe I am just cranky on this subject since I remember having to take over any “team” I was assigned to and do all the work so that whatever slackers I was paired with did not drag down the score.

Perhaps that is the real lesson being taught in our schools?

I know I had to learn that lesson over and over in the technical fields of the corporate world. Never assume your co-workers or manager know WTF they are doing.

Perhaps you can explain this one to me.
