I’m thinking of upgrading from my 1940’s era Oster Beehive blender to a Vita-mix. The blender has been great – use it everyday for smoothies, but I would like something a bit more versatile. Something powerful enough to make hummus, and i don’t want to have a Cuisenart and a blender sitting on the counter. Anyone have a VitaMix and care to comment on it’s usefulness, ease of cleaning, etc.

I’ve had a Vita-mix for several years. It’s expensive, but totally worth it. As a blender, it’s highly capable. It came with a cookbook with lots of interesting recipes, and it’s great for the tasks you mentioned. My only complaint is that it’s not dishwasher safe and because the blade and container don’t come apart, it can be hard to get the last bit of food out and sometimes it’s hard to clean. Most of the time it will come clean just by running it with hot water and a drop of soap, but when something gets stuck on the blade it can be a hassle. A food processor does a better job of chopping and slicing, so you may still want to have both. But for making soups, purees, breadcrumbs, sauces, and drinks, Vita-mix can’t be beat.

I wanted a Vita-mix a few years ago, I had borrowed my Aunts, which is a classic style. It has the metal container instead of the plastic that is sold today.

I really wanted the classic style, so I found one on Ebay. Its been great, I’ve had it a few years now, the motor is strong – no complaints. And it goes in the dishwasher.

One tip for cleaning blades or even the container itself – I’ll fill it with ice and run it. The ice does a good job of scrubbing away any debris.

I loved my Vita-Mix…daughter has now “borrowed” it…someday I may get to use it again :) and, yes, it goes in the dishwasher, and mine wasn’t new..years old…got it on freecycle, a bargain :)

Love mine too. Not dishwasher safe but fill halfway with warm water, a drop of soap, turn on high for a minute, cleans it every time. Have only had it a few weeks and so far have only made green smoothies (daily!) but can wait to try the other recipes.

made marinara, hot soup, tried peanut butter (hard to clean out). And, yes Treysealin, that’s an easy way to clean it..

Love my Vitamix. They are worth it. I make a smoothie with almonds, yogurt, veggies, and lots of frozen fruit and it comes out completely smooth. I don’t think there is any other blender that can do that.

B-squared I don’t have any insight into the Vitamix blender. But if you end up buying one and want to sell your Oster Beehive, if it’s still in good shape, I would be interested in buying it. You can reach me at pennidogg at hotmail dot com.

I might take you up on that, pennidogg – i’ll hold on your email. It cleans up nice – i actually have two – one was a back-up as i said. i make smoothies everyday. i’ll try the back-up tomorrow to see how it does.

Thanks all for the glowing recommendations. Have heard very little to discourage this direction. just need to explore the best source. costco.com has it with probably all the accessories as a package. BBandB has it and i can like use the 20%off coupons that are perpetually in my mailbox. i’ll look at craigslist but that has gotten a little more sketchy than i’m comfortable with. Ebay might be ok, but shipping will be a lot i should think.

You may want to try QVC as well, they may have easy pay which may make the price more tolerable. Also another thought.. not sure if they have places that service them in Seattle, but if they do maybe you can get a refurbished one.
