Why is the blatant failure of peer review of an economics paper in that fields most prestigious journal relevant to us here where we discuss climate ? Well for one, we saw failures of peer review such as gate-keeping and favoritism on display in the Climategate episode. Remember this one from Phil Jones at the Climate Research Unit of East Anglia University ?

A Rant on Peer Review

Any academic who’s been through the peer review process many times ( as I have ) knows that the process is full of potholes and is sometimes subverted by unethical behavior on the part of editors and reviewers.
The reason I bring this up is because of a brewing scandal in my own discipline, economics. There has been online discussion about this for over a month, but I’ve delayed this post both because I’ve been traveling too much and because I was hoping for a resolution before I wrote anything down. But as a junior economist recently told me: “ The relative silence by senior economists regarding the editorial handling of this paper has been deafening. †So here it goes.
The Associated Recreation Council (ARC), in partnership with Seattle Parks & Recreation, serves Seattle by offering a variety of recreational and lifelong learning programs, classes and activities. Our school-age care programs provide a fun, creative, safe and welcoming environment for children to learn, play and grow.
The School-Age Child Care Director is responsible for planning and directing before and after school child care and summer day camp programs for youth ages 5-12 years old; working with Community Center staff to coordinate events, programs and community outreach; supporting other ARC programs within the community center by being a part of planning, marketing and coordination of childcare program events and projects.
There are new openings for the following Hiawatha Community Center programs:
•Genesee Hill Elementary School
•Lafayette Elementary School
•Schmitz Park Elementary SchoolSchedule:
•Monday – Friday 40 hours per week, straight shift
•Schedule subject to change due to program/season and business needsResponsibilities:
•Develop programs that are developmentally age appropriate and culturally relevant
•Establish relationships of mutual trust and good communication with program participants, their families, and community center staff
•Comply with all Department of Early Learning Licensing requirements
•Oversee program staff, including scheduling and on the job training
•Prepare reports and perform other administrative tasks, attendance records, program application and fees, budgeting, etc.
•Provide a safe environment by maintaining orderly, clean and appealing facilities; competent in emergency preparedness; removing known safety hazards; ensuring staff have current CPR/First Aid certification, and any other required or applicable credentialsMinimum Requirements:
•Must be 21 years of age or older
•Must have completed a minimum of 45 or more college credits or a combination of one-third clock hours and two-thirds college credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Social Work, or other child-related field including, but not limited to: art, music, and dance relevant to school-age children, recreation or leisure time activities, physical education, education, psychology, social services, home economics, or nutrition
•Must have at least 2+ years of experience working in child-related programs
•Must have 3-5 years supervisory and/or mentorship experience
•Must have demonstrated working experience working with families, community members and partners to foster positive relationships
•Must have a valid WA state driver license and clear a driving history record from DOL upon hire
•Must provide documentation of current Red Cross First-Aid/CPR certification, HIV/AIDS blood-borne pathogens education and training, a valid King County Food Handlers Permit, WA State Driver’s License, TB test clearance, STARS training or documentation of exemption
•Must successfully complete a background checkThis is a full-time, year-round, benefited position. Hours will vary and may be scheduled between 6:00am to 6:00pm. Working split shifts may be required based on business/program need.

Due to our rapid growth and programming expansion, we are seeking a highly organized, and innovative Senior School-Age Child Care Director with the ability to think critically, and solve problems quickly. As our new Senior Director you will oversee all personnel at multiple sites.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
•Supervisor for the day-to-day operations of 3 or more program locations with high student populations, diversity in program offerings, and activities within a diverse community.
•Connect daily with assigned sites to monitor and facilitate any changes needed to ensure the continued delivery of high quality, age appropriate, and culturally relevant programs.
•Advise the ARC Field Supervisor and/or Director of Field Operations on highly visible or sensitive issues essential to ARC program operations or personnel.
•Provide leadership to program staff using effective problem solving, conflict resolution, policy development and/or improvements.
•Ensure proper staffing levels for all sites and backfill as needed.
•Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and Department of Early Learning standards and guidelines.
•Other duties as assigned.To be successful in this role you will need the following minimum qualifications:
•Ability to effectively interact and connect with diverse individuals of all levels.
•Demonstrated success in using initiative, discretion, and sound judgement in decision making.
•Effective and clear written and verbal communication skills.
•Three or more years’ experience in program and facility operations for multiple locations, including budget oversight, preschool and/or school-age care programs preferred.
•Three or more years managing, mentoring, and developing staff, including employee evaluations, staff training and development, performance management, and hiring/termination recommendations.
•Good working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, including Department of Early Learning licensed programs.
•Have completed a minimum of 45 or more college credits or combination of one-third clock hours and two-thirds college credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Social Work, other child-related field including, but not limited to: art, music, and dance relevant to school-age children; recreation or leisure time activities, physical education, education, psychology, social services, home economics, or nutrition. Education may be substituted by providing evidence of ability to perform the tasks through a combination of education, training, or experience.
•Minimum of two years of experience working with school-age children.

I don’t know but maybe this is related to the eternal philosophical question about another avian species and why did it cross the road. Is it possible that we may finally have a solution to this age old question or are we seeing the beginning of a phenomenon where the behavior has spontaneously transferred to another bird. Will this mystery of why did the geese cross the road become as baffling as the actions of the common chicken.

Multi-tasking, some computer skills, and a fondness for seniors desired. Our volunteers are well loved by the seniors and staff alike! The STOP N’ SHOP thrift store is lucky to be the recipient of many wonderful donations from the community, ranging from furniture, clothing, and home décor. We also have many return customers looking for that special something. Happily, the proceeds provide financial support that keep the many wonderful programs running at the Senior Center of West Seattle.
Two Positions Available:
CASHIER on Sundays – Two shifts available, morning 9:45am—1pm & afternoon 1pm-4:20pm. Duties include ringing up sales on cash register, receiving payment via cash or credit card, wrapping and bagging up purchases, answering shopper questions, opening or closing the store, completing sales report, replenishing cashier supplies and tidying up the shelves as needed.
Backroom Assistant – This “behind the scenes†volunteer would ideally work Wednesday & Friday afternoons from 1-4pm, but there is flexibility. Duties include attaching pricing to merchandise, sorting donations, disposing of unsaleable merchandise, placing newly priced items on shelves, and performing monthly mark downs.

I follow a hiking group on Facebook and I spotted an entry about emergency ID. There are several companies that have taken a great idea and made it better. The applications are unlimited.
This type of ID lessens the probability of something snagging or noise whenever there is movement. Best of all there is generally more room for information on the tags.
ID just makes sense these days, especially with kids, pets and parents doing more outside activities and the availability of extreme sport participation in the surrounding area.

The West Seattle Helpline is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to preventing homelessness and providing preventive, transitional assistance to at-risk families in our neighborhood.
We have been awarded an AmeriCorps placement through YWCA Sound Youth for 2016-2017 and are hiring an AmeriCorps*VISTA to serve as our Development and Outreach Coordinator. The selected applicant will be responsible for evaluating our existing development and outreach strategies and systems and then using that evaluation to guide the development and pilot-testing of new-and-improved approaches to raising awareness, funds, and resources needed to more effectively fulfill our mission.
The primary responsibilities associated with this position will involve:
1) Researching best practices for each of three areas: client- & community-focused outreach, donor- & volunteer focused outreach, and donor engagement & cultivation.
2) Work under supervision of the Executive Director and in consultation with respective Board of Directors committees to design a strategic plan for each of those three areas.
3) Use plans to guide the development of a data collection protocol to ensure that the West Seattle Helpline is gathering and communicating the quantitative and qualitative impact data needed for optimal execution of each plan.
4) Oversee the launch of strategic plans in a “pilot phase†to allow for testing, revision, and re-testing in an iterative quality-improvement process.HOW TO APPLY:

Also, I posted the first video on April 19th and when I went back almost 2 months to the day, on June 20th, the behavior was the same. About one per minute ran the stop sign. Same location, same time frame.

Recording people in public is 100% legal. The person taking video or photographs does not need the subjects permission. That is a myth. Courts have ruled, there is no expectation of privacy in public. Thanks.
