This morning about 5:15am, I happened to look out the window just as a very large cat walked east across 9th Ave SW (near Elmgrove). It was maybe 4x the size of a standard house cat — probably 40-50 lbs, a bit larger than my medium-sized dog. Thinking my eyes were tricking me, I tried to convince myself it was a dog, but it moved just like a cat. It walked behind a parked car and into a yard on the east side of 9th.

I haven’t read or heard anything recently about cougar (?–or other big cat) sightings in our neighborhood. Anyone seen something similar?

bobcat maybe? cougars are big. The main way to tell the difference is cougars have 3 ft tails while bobcats are more around 6 in. Seeing a bobcat is not out of the question in western washington. I’ve got interest as I live on 9th a block from that intersection.

@beef — This one had a long tail…3 feet long not out of the question.

It’s not impossible. We are right near a sizable forested area, after all. A cougar was seen and captured in Discovery Park in 2009.

It may have been just passing through. Cougars range widely and don’t particularly like being around densely populated areas. That said, they can pose a danger to pets and small children so a call to Fish & Wildlife might be in order. If there are more sightings they’ll send someone to trap and relocate.
