The Annual West Seattle Garage Sale is just around the corner. This year it falls on May 14th & 15th . At the end of their garage sale, participants often donate their unsold items to our Junction Thrift Store at 4504 California Ave SW.

We need volunteers either Saturday the 14th or 15th for 3 hour shifts:
    – Unload cars dropping off merchandise at the shop.
    – Pack items that we can sell and stack those boxes.
    – Dump broken items into our trash bin.
    – Pack and transport items we can’t sell to the Northwest Center truck nearby.

    Shifts:

    Saturday, May 14th – 12pm to 3pm or 3pm to 6pm
    Sunday, May 15th-    10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm or 3pm to 6pm
Work shifts are 3 hours long but we can be flexible with your availability.

Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 206–932-4044 x8 or send email to jillk@soundgenerations.org or apply online at https://scws.typeform.com/to/DBaLgg.

Here’s the problem, and the legality that the administration faces as the administration tries to give away money to these international climate change groups: it’s now prohibited by law. On March 17, 2016 – the U.N. officially recognized the so-called ‘State of Palestine.’ They said that the ‘ State of Palestine ’ is a full member of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to a 1994 law, passed by the House, passed by the Senate ( both controlled by the Democrats at the time ), signed into law, the United States cannot give any money to ‘ an affiliated organization of United Nations ’ that grants the Palestinians membership as a state. It’s called the 1994 Foreign Relations Authorization Act. These climate change groups are clearly affiliated organizations of the U.N.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – the organization that the Palestinian group, this so-called State of Palestine, just joined as a member state – says on its own website that it is ‘ institutionally linked ’ to the U.N. It also reports that the Green Climate Fund is one of it – it says – its ‘ constituted bodies, ’ so there’s a direct link.

The pipeline of money that the Obama administration is planning to send to these organizations must be shut off.

That’s what happened in 2011, when the Palestinian group joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – commonly known as UNESCO. That triggered a similar 1990 law – and the United States has not given any money to UNESCO ever since.

Update: May 26 2009 The daily image update has been temporarily suspended because of large areas of missing data in the past week. NSIDC currently gets its data from the SSM/I sensor on the DMSP F13 satellite, which is nearing the end of its operational life and experiencing intermittent problems.

NSIDC has been working on a transition to a newer sensor on the F17 satellite for several months. At this time, we have more than a year of data from F17, which we are using to intercalibrate with F13 data. The F17 data are not yet available for near-real-time updates. We will resume posting daily updates as soon as possible, either from F13, if the present problem is resolved, or from F17, when the transition is complete.

Makes you wonder ( once again ) how long this has been going on and if the anomalously low readings we’ve seen for awhile are due to a slow sensor degradation.

    Time will tell.

The STOP N’ SHOP is lucky to be the recipient of many wonderful donations from the community, ranging from furniture, clothing, and home décor. Happily, the proceeds provide financial support that keep the many wonderful programs running at the Senior Center of West Seattle. We need a “behind the scenes” volunteer 6 hours per week to help with the intake and pricing of the merchandise. Ideal work hours are Wednesday & Friday afternoons from 1-4pm, but there is flexibility.

Starbucks never purchased/acquired Tully’s. Maybe you are thinking of Seattle’s Best? ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tully’s_Coffee

I have lived in WS since 2001 and have never seen another Starbucks in Morgan Junction. It was a Tully’s and a Starbucks.

You don’t say specifically where you’re coming from but the route I take when I ride to Fremont is as follows: Over the low bridge and Spokane to Alaskan> Alaskan to the bike path along the tunnel construction to it’s terminus at Alaskan along the waterfront> (here’s the hairiest part) Alaskan, under the viaduct, to Myrtle Edwards park> Bike bath through Myrtle Edwards park, across the road at the docks at the Norther terminus and then along the trail adjacent tot he Interlake BNSF railyard> take this to W. Emerson Pl and get on the sidewalk at the 1st light, this connects with the South Ship Canal Trail. You’ll follow the trail until you come to the ramp that ties in to Florentia St which will get you onto the Fremont bridge.

    Dear Northwest Art and Frame

To be honest, although I do not have the recent retail in-store experience you seek, I have kept busy with my own small business/storefront.  I sold ukuleles and similar island wares on-line and on the road.  I also teach the ukulele, my second passion besides the visual arts.

I am positive that I can be a valued employee as I am a quick learner.  I am a retired graphic artist looking, very hard, for this retail in-store experience that you offer.

I am familiar with the Square point of sale system.  I am very confident that I can learn any other system you may have, with little instruction.  For example: I bought my first Mac in 1983 and taught myself how to control it and introduced it to the agency I was working for.  I was their first MIS man.

I have a strong work ethic, always working since high school until now.  My past jobs working with people have always been my favorite.  I was a short order cook, a bartender, and a soda jerk.  My most recent experiences were as an Aviation Draftsman at Boeing, and as a creative artist.

My graphic artist career was in one of the top advertising agencies in Seattle.  I had to work alongside clients regularly, winning  a share of awards along the way for them and myself.

I would love to be a member of the Northwest Art & Frame family.  Over the years, while living in West Seattle, NWA&F has been one of the stores where I most liked to shop.  I always found a wonderful selection and helpful and happy people to assist me.  I want to be one of those people.

Attached is my work history with the hopes that it will amuse and inform you.

JR 01 Location - Fortin et al

    ka = thousands of years

At Lake JR01 from the Boothia Peninsula, Nunavut, ( Canada ) chironomid-inferred mean July air temperatures were warmest in the mid-Holocene, reaching as high as 7.5° C. Temperatures decreased over the course of the mid- to late-Holocene. Overall terrestrial and aquatic production, as indicated by chironomid, pollen and diatom concentrations and accumulation rates, as well as sediment organic and biogenic content, were higher prior to 5.0 ka than at any other time in the Holocene. The diatom community assemblages during the mid-Holocene also indicate that this was a warm period in the lake’s history. Between 5.0 and 1.0 ka, the lake was cooler and less productive. Inferred temperatures, based on both the chironomid and the pollen records, indicate additional cooling between 0.46 and 0.36 ka that corresponds to the Little Ice Age (LIA).

    CONCLUSION, IN PART

During the Early and Middle Holocene … focus is on the implications of the four major climate cold anomalies that have recently been identified as key time-windows for global RCC ( Rapid Climate Change ) ( Mayewski et al. 2004). These cooling anomalies are well-dated, with the following precise time-intervals for archaeological RCC research: (i) 8.6–8.0 ka, (ii) 6.0–5.2 ka, (iii) 4.2–4.0 ka and (iv) 3.1–2.9 ka ….

    More Background

Geochronometry: A branch of geochronology that deals with the quantitative (numerical) measurement of geologic time. The abbreviation ka – for thousand

    Wave Evolution

What follows regards Francis and Vavrus (2012), hereinafter FV (2012), by atmospheric scientists Jennifer Francis from Rutgers University and Steve Vavrus of the University of Wisconsin. Their paper can be downloaded here:

    Severe Claims

FV (2012) claims a measured decrease in the zonal or west to east wind component due to “arctic amplification” (AA) would increase jet stream meandering, increase the amplitude or “waviness” of the flow, and increase persistent long wave blocking patterns around the northern hemisphere. This, in turn, would increase severe weather, droughts, floods and temperature extremes. These claims were subsequently picked up by media outlets and offered as further gist for the fodder of catastrophic, CO2 caused, water vapor amplified, global warming.

HOWEVER, as often is the case, current science is NOT the ” settled science “.

“The reader needs to understand that anytime we experience severe weather, it is proof that adequate COLD in the high latitudes and Arctic has been generated by the normal radiational cooling process by the earth that creates the adequate potential energy across the latitude lines to cause amplification of the jet stream waves and speeds that pushes this colder air southward to warmer latitudes that then creates the necessary temperature gradients to liberate that energy, creating storms as well as high pressure systems.”

    AND

“If the occurrence of severe weather is increasing worldwide, it is not a sign of a warming earth. It is the opposite of what climate hysteria claims, and an indication of a cooling, not warming earth.”

    Current Science Responds

More about Francis and Vavrus [2012]

Similarly, Francis and Vavrus [2012] suggest that atmospheric Rossby waves have elongated meridionally in recent decades due to Arctic amplification. They hypothesize that these elongated waves propagate more slowly and favor more extreme weather conditions. They speculate that as the earth continues to warm, Arctic amplification will increasingly influence the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation, potentially causing more extreme weather in association with the slower waves.

Motivated by these previous studies linking Arctic amplification to increased slow-moving Atlantic weather patterns, we seek to answer the following three questions: (1) Have wave extents increased over the past 30 years ? (2) Have the phase speeds of large-scale atmospheric waves decreased ? (3) Has the frequency of blocking events increased ?
