austinMemberI’d say it went pretty well. Some don’t disagree: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=17382 . Alki was a much more lighthearted environment than usual. I don’t know if it was because of the police presence or the fact that you couldn’t drive directly to the beach but there was a notable lack of hooliganism which is otherwise so often present there. I walked from about luna park to the other end of alki and there were more people out biking and walking than usual along the entire stretch but there were a TON of people at the beach. Lot of fun stuff happening, volleyball, live music, restaurant patios were all packed. There’s nothing in the world that everyone’s gonna like but this event was well attended, enjoyable, and much more well run / organized than last year.

May 29, 2009 at 9:01 am #668181WSBKeymasterThanks, we posted that in news on the home page earlier this week (though without so much detail – will point the home page preview later this morning to your item here):

WSBKeymasterActually last year the weather was spectacular. And a lot of people were at the beach. I’m still waiting for a business that actually suffered last year to come forward and say so. Anyway, here are our photos from the as-it-happened story last year (I walked the whole stretch, taking pix and stopping to post updates along the way):

MargLMemberThere’s a WSB/forum member, Jeff Savoie, who has replied in the past on the stories/posts about raccoons. It’s one of the issues like off-leash dogs that seems to come up regularly. :-)
He works for (runs?) a pest control business and seems pretty knowledgeable about this issue.
Here’s a link to one of his post with info about how to contact him, if he doesn’t seen this forum topic and reply himself… https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=12281#comment-591018

SueParticipantLindy, if you are in fact the owner of Paneless windows, then why were you recommending them last week, in a post that sounded like a satisfied customer, not an owner? https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=744 And you were replying to a post on window washing that was a year old, and now you’re telling us not to recommend Paneless? Something is not right here.

hopeyParticipantbtw, here is another example — freshly posted — about a dog that is reactive to other dogs while on leash. The owner says they ran into 4 off-leash dogs in a 20 minute period.

May 21, 2009 at 4:50 am #667251In reply to: Dog walker for $10 an hour?
hopeyParticipantTo answer the question directed at me, yes, I’m completely serious.
I went through a 12 week dog training apprentice program working with, in some cases, dogs who react very strongly to other dogs. I learned how to teach those dogs to be less reactive. I watched trainers attempt to teach those dogs’ owners how to handle the dogs appropriately, with varying levels of success. I also learned that most “normal” dog owners have no idea how to prevent an off-leash dog from approaching their on-leash dog.
If the teenager walking your beagle was rushed by an aggressive dog, what would happen? If that teenager was injured as a result of the work she or he was doing for you, what would happen? Do you really think the teenager’s parents would just accept that they had to foot the bill for medical care? I think it is FAR more likely that they would go back to their child’s “employer” and expect financial assistance.
Just search the forums here and you’ll find numerous stories about frightening off-leash dogs, and even on-leash dogs getting injured by offleash dogs. Here’s an example: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=1873
I work with dogs for a living. I wish you all the best, but I have far too much professional experience with “normal people’s dogs” to believe that accidents never happen.
May 20, 2009 at 5:00 pm #667105In reply to: RANT: Garlic Jim’s Annoying Marketing Call
lighthouseParticipantTwo questions for people getting these calls:
1. Do you have a business relationship with Garlic Jim’s?
2. Are your phone numbers in the national do not call registry? (https://www.donotcall.gov/)
If you have done business with them, then they actually are allowed to call you until you tell them to stop regardless of whether your number is in the do not call registry.
If you have not done business with them and your number is in the do not call registry, they are breaking the law. Use the page above to register a complaint with the FTC.

digidollMember“…your graffiti response drags the neighborhood down much more than someone’s initials.”
I’m not saying that what he did was right, but you should be aware that the original graffiti is more than just “someone’s initials,” it is SV13, which is a tag for a gang that hangs in WC and the surrounding areas, including the park right NEXT to the elementary school.
See this post from 9/08 for more of the same activity nearby:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=10497
If it got painted over immediately, they’d be back the next night admiring their fresh new blank canvas to tag again. At least this way, no more tagging has happened – and likely no more will with the installation of cameras, which the taggers now know about (if they can read).

miwsParticipantHi, hollyplace, were they husky type dogs?
This thread, https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=4921 is from Saturday, I think, (even though at this time, it says it’s from 1 day ago).
It describes two husky type dogs spotted running loose between the Admiral and Alaska Junctions.

May 11, 2009 at 3:33 am #666418In reply to: What is my neighborhood called?
WSBKeymasterActually the area north of The Mount is simply Fairmount. There is a Fairmount Community Association but they don’t have a website. They meet periodically … here’s our article about a meeting we covered last November:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=11707
Fairmount Springs is actually a couple miles away, in the area just south of Fairmount Park, further complicating matters.
I would seriously advise not using any site that’s not city-based or WS-based in terms of neighborhood names.
I’ll go haul out the official city boundary maps and add them to this post in a minute – although they have a bit of screwiness – there are some local neighborhoods not included in the map, and they use some names that are not in general use where they use them (for example, “Roxhill” is used for a sweeping area, whereas in practice, it’s not used much outside the immediate Roxhill park/school vicinity).
(added)
http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/public/nmaps/south.htm
Keep clicking on the map to get closer in and closer in. Although upon further review it’s not much help. Yes, 33rd and Andover would be the Luna Park area. Which isn’t acknowledged on the map. Quick, somebody start a Luna Park Neighborhood Association! Things are booming there.

WSBKeymasterBy “the news” I’m guessing you mean someplace else but we have covered it here as well FWIW:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=16554
While comments on that story indicated sightings of this in various places around West Seattle, when I reviewed police reports last Monday night, there was only a report about this particular instance. So I would suggest that if you see it elsewhere, please report it in addition to taking other action. That is what will give police the best chance of catching those responsible, since it has “malicious harassment” status in the original case now and that could mean a tougher penalty.
miwsParticipantHi Myrna, I’ve never used them, (or any other martial arts place for that matter) but Seattle Wushu recently moved back to WS, after having to move away due to their former WS location being torn down.
They are now at the northwest corner of California & Juneau, in the old Auto Glass space. (Their former WS location, was on the northwest corner of California & Graham.)
