Umm … I believe the parks are technically still open on furlough days (there is nothing in the official announcement about the actual parks being closed to users http://parkways.seattle.gov/2010/03/10/facilities-will-close-for-furlough/ ) — you could park on the street.

Also, the levy you are referring to was a CAPITAL levy, not an operating levy (and has only been in effect for one year.) You (and I) are paying for tons of improvements we will never use (i.e. new soccer or softball fields for me); the alternative is to charge people only for the services they use or plan to use in the future — and watch our parks go down the toilet. I also pay property taxes to support public schools that are useless to me as I have no children — should I be demanding to be allowed to eat lunch for free in the grade school cafeteria?

As was noted in this recent WSB article, https://westseattleblog.com/2010/03/the-parks-board-junction-plaza-park-has-a-construction-contract: “One big problem: No money to maintain the new parks facilities funded by the Parks and Green Spaces Levy, and barely enough to maintain what the department has now.” It is nearly impossible to get a maintenance levy passed until the parks have deteriorated to the point of being unusable, so maintenance is funded through less stable and less predictable sources.

Seems to me that by furloughing staff, they are managing their money well — they are reducing expenses. Have you not had to make any changes in your own life due to the ‘economic downturn’?

Enjoy the natural beauty of our city — that the citizens have voted repeatedly to continue to invest in for the future. If you don’t want to vote for the next levy, don’t. But don’t be surprised to see parking meters in the lot if the levy fails.

Funny, I have had an inquiry out to SPS about what’s next for both Boren and Hughes.

Sat in on a case last year in which the district wanted to bypass the “school use advisory committee” process if prospective uses for Hughes, Genesee Hill and a few other “closed” buildings would fit in existing zoning, which I believe would include moving another school in.

And in fact, looking at the SPS site, I see they requested lease proposals earlier this month for sites including Hughes and Genesee.

Board approval would be required so even if Westside had a proposal out, it certainly wouldn’t be final yet.

I was in the middle of my contract when we replaced our windows with more energy efficient double panes. The signal would not go through the double panes, it couldn’t and we were told it wasn’t designed to. The signal wasn’t a problem with our window open though. Customer service told us to just leave the window open for service. As you know, that’s ridiculous when it’s winter. It took a while but we got out of the contract without penalty.

Now we use Qwest. Not great but the best for the money. Qwest is owned by Verizon. Our bill is therefore bundled and discounted because of that.

I’ve been the only reporter at several major meetings lately and also asked Mayor McGinn about city plans at his monthly media “brownbag” yesterday, superseded by some developments today.

You’ll see all the stories we’ve done recently. Also, are you on the Yahoo! list for South Park? I joined when I jumped into this coverage a few weeks ago and am quite impressed. Both of our state’s US senators are coming to South Park this Sunday afternoon and some peaceful demonstrating is being suggested, btw. We’ll be there to cover whatever happens (the event is supposedly to celebrate the health-care vote – it’s happening at the IAM hall).

Also, if you want to keep up with the latest news on The Viaduct, we are often the only reporter at the key South Portal Working Group meetings on that issue too – latest one, just a couple days ago. No, nothing is closing in 2012 – the Viaduct, unless something drastic happens, will be kept up until the tunnel (assuming that isn’t halted) is done, theoretically 2016.

It’s been almost 2 years and wanted to publicly say that I owe Justin a milkshake or perhaps a beer at Big Al’s.

Justin has a fantastic product, a great little shop (yes, i know 3 locations – but we go to WC) and has been a top notch guy.

The service at FT has always been great, the ice cream is fantastic and you’ve definitely got to try their Irish Whiskey Caramel Sauce (had some tonight and felt compelled to write). I regularly take my family to FT and have blasted praises all over FB and Twitter about his business.

Not sure how many people subscribe to Tippr deals (it’s like Groupon). The deal today is for X-Gym. I remember a thread recently with people raving about this place. I’ve been wanting to try it, but couldn’t bear to shell out the big bucks. The deal’s good for a couple days (or until they run out of vouchers). Pay $25 and get four bootcamp sessions ($80 value). If enough people buy, the deal gets “tipped” and you have the option to redeem it for 3 one-on-one personal training sessions instead ($120 value). When I bought it this morning (Weds) the deal hadn’t tipped yet, still needed a few more people to buy. You have to be a new member. Limited to buying one for yourself and one as a gift.

JoB and Dale kindly have given us permission to use their fine pix – the South Park Bridge will come in handy and the grebes might be a “West Seattle weekend scene.” But what I mostly wanted to say here is that I documented a recent Duwamish cruise in video, probably little-viewed as I wound up finally putting it up in the middle of the night, and that included the car-crushing/grabbing in action, if anyone is interested in another look at some of the sights (albeit in drearier weather) that Jo/Dale’s photos document.

We just got back from Captain Dave’s Duwamish river tour and we had a GREAT time..

the boat is a small open beamed open cabin with benches, a table, a wood stove, a head under the wheelhouse for life’s emergencies and a covered deck with benches at the back…

there is plenty of room for 6 people.. and a sizable picnic lunch… and adequate headroom for a 6’4″ man.. Dave himself is a tall lanky fellow.

It was pretty cool this morning but Dave kept it toasty with the wood stove… and was a treasure trove of information about the river and the different industries that line it. He knows a surprising amount about the history of both the river and the industry that has made it viable.

He told us that the original river wound back and forth and connected to Lake Washington where a whaling fleet moored at the turn of the last century… His eyes sparkled as he told us of his grandfather’s Seattle development maps from 1911.. he says the river was straight by then…

We saw arctic birds overwintering and harbor seals in addition to a fair amount of boat traffic.. both commercial and pleasure… and got a better idea how West Seattle connects to downtown via the industrial district.

We bought some extra time and were able to go out into Elliot Bay and around the point… but i have to say the best part of the tour was the river.

This was a celebration for us… at an age when most people give up and start looking for exit signs… we were celebrating careers taking unexpected turns towards exciting horizons…

thank you Dave for making it an incredible afternoon… one of life’s highlights.

For those who might be interested.. dave is offering a tour of the Duwamish for 6 people for $100 maybe through the end of the month…

It was worth every penny and then some.
