ramino: The feed that European laying hens get can be surprisingly different than what American hens are raised on. For instance, American farmers provide less calcium to save money but the French would never let them get away with that over there. As a result, eggs in France actually have much thicker shells.

I’ve sampled a lot of local, sustainable eggs of really high quality. But I can’t say that I’ve found many locally with the REALLY orange yolks you’re seeking. In general, you’ll want to find chicken farmers who allow their free-range hens to supplement their feed diets with a rich selection of bugs and worms. Those are the eggs that tend to be the most nutritious. You might try to see if you can find some of Michaele Blakely’s eggs from Carnation, WA. Available at U-District, Ballard and Bellevue farmers’ markets.

Closer to home, you might check with the jelly/jam seller at the West Seattle farmers’ market. I can’t remember his name. But I know that his young daughter occasionally sells eggs from their family farm (in Monroe, WA) that, if I recall correctly, had very orange yolks:

We are trying to find a new home for our couch. It is an off-white 3-seater with cloth upholstery. It’s in great shape, no tears. It does have quite a few stains, mostly tea, water, milk, etc. We have a cat and a dog in the house, though they never slept on the couch.

It would be great if it was picked before this weekend (July 30 – 31).

I am attaching some pictures to show the condition of the upholstery.

This position places an Apple Corps Americorps member with the King County Food and Fitness initiative (KCFFI) in their school food and fitness program. The King County Food and Fitness Initiative (KCFFI) is a community coalition formed in 2006, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to begin planning for an initiative, called Food and Fitness, launched in 2007 nationally in 9 regions around the country. The vision for the Food and Fitness Initiative is Creating vibrant communities that support access to locally grown, healthy, affordable food and safe and inviting places for physical activity and play for everyone. The MISSION of the King County Food & Fitness Initiative is to foster collaborative leadership among diverse community partners to co-create long-term, innovative strategies to realize our vision of equitable access to resources and choices that promote health. To achieve our goals, we actively engage with communities and youth in planning, decision making, and fun activities. This work is focused in Southwest Seattle in the Delridge and White Center Neighborhoods. These are two highly diverse, low income neighborhoods. The schools in these two neighborhoods serve children and families, of which, upwards of 80% of whom are living in poverty. The work of the School Food & Fitness team is to support our neighborhood schools and partners in creating safe environments and opportunities for healthy choices.

Member Duties : Responsibilities of the Safe Routes to School organizer include working on a team of School Food & Fitness staff, specializing in supporting the development of Safe Routes to School Programs. The responsibilities of the Safe Routes to School Coordinator include introducing safe walking/biking curriculum at low income schools and community based organizations, implementing school based activities (like a walk/bike to school campaign), community events, and helping to build volunteerism & partnerships to support safe streets and active transportation.

kootch: you need to look at this WSB forums thread regarding testing. yes, teaching to the test is becoming an industry. but the people who grade the standardized tests are not teachers. they’re just part-time and temp workers. i encourage you to read some of the links from that thread; the test scorers oftentimes aren’t even parents and they have a weird way of interpreting kids’ answers.

After signing in at the front desk, Council members Bagshaw, Licata, Rasmussen, and Clark are welcomed by an official NV delegation and given a quick tour of the kitchen facilities, the donation station, and the garden.

 

Relations among the Council members seemed cordial enough to me. There were few scuffles to speak of; eye gouging was minimal. Yet for some reason they were almost immediately sent to see an arbitrator.

…you know, I’ve got to ask, and I can’t think how to without sounding snarky, so I’ll just ask: Have you read back through the blog at all?

I’m sorry if that comes across as snarky, but considering that the last WSB post about coyotes was roughly two weeks ago, and you’ve been around the blog for awhile…I’m just a little surprised that this is news, that’s all. Highland Park is right next to 300 acres of urban forest; I saw coyotes here (I live not far from you) before I ever saw raccoons, and that was a good 10 years ago. Heck, I once found a coyote skeleton during a Nature Consortium work party.

That said, I agree with keeping pets indoors at night (my cat doesn’t go outside at all). Plenty of unpleasant things can happen to them quite aside from coyotes (my neighbors are pretty sure a car got theirs, for instance) and it’s better for their health and longevity.
