JoBParticipanti know this was asked and answered once before but i am hoping hummingbird lovers will think that this can never come up too many times..
i have late spring to late fall plantings covered for my hummingbird friends
and generally i put out feeders for the balance of the year.. but i would prefer to add year round plantings.
i remember someone naming a plant or two for winter…
if you will post again… i promise.. i will put my winter plant list on the fridge and purchase them as soon as they are available
and maybe we can convince a plant lover or two to tackle some of the year round list too :)
i didn’t put out feeders this year because we were gone for December and i knew my housesitter wouldn’t be a diligent hummingbird feeder…
but they will be going up again this weekend since hubby has seen a few hummers flying through since we got home.

anonymeParticipantJo, my yard has been humming all winter long with no letup in sight, mostly due to several large ‘Charity’ mahonias (a cultivar of Oregon grape) that have been blooming since December – and now the sarcococca is flowering! I also have several varieties of azara, including a large A. microphylla, that gets tiny, yellow, chocolate-scented flowers in winter. I’ve seen the hummers buried in the sarcococca almost at ground level, which makes me think they’d love the hellebores as well – which are also blooming now, depending on the cultivar. West Seattle Nursery has an awesome hellebore selection, although my favorite – ‘Pink Frost’ – has not come in yet. I don’t have one (yet) but Daphne will be blooming in the not too distant future. Some daffodils are already in bloom, and rhodies will be next…so there’s plenty available to keep your hummers happy!

kayoParticipantA hummingbird (Anna’s, I think) visits our blooming rosemary every day all winter long.

JoBParticipantThanks for the suggestions..
The rosemary is along the front fence and I spend too little time out there to know if the hummers visit..
But my hellebores are almost all in bloom. That may be why hubby is seeing the little fellows.
I can see a trip to the nursery in my very near future;)

B-squaredParticipantThe mahonia and the witch hazel in the arboretum’s winter garden are really hopping with hummers now. i plan to put some of those in when I have yard make over.

anonymeParticipantWhy not? Buying plants is one of the few retail therapies that is good for the planet! This will be a good weekend for planting (hardy stock, that is). Go ahead – enjoy! I may even see you there…

hubby may not be so thankful when he see the tab from the nursery.. but he enjoys the hummers more than i do.
