When we gave up on single payer, the public option stopped looking like a compromise and the health insurance lobby put pressure on congress.

If we advocated nothing but single payer… a public option might be possible… as a first step.

step 2? did you know that in the state of Minnesota Health insurance companies have to be non-profit? They still hold ridiculous reserves but their insurance is a lot less expensive than ours. We could do that at a state level first.

step 3 we could reduce a large amount of administrative overhead by requiring insurance code standardization.

then.. ithink we could pass single payer.

will this happen in my lifetime? I sure hope so..

but then i would like to see the ERA ratified before i die too.

For now.. let’s put pressure on our elected reps for single payer… at least then when they settle we might actually get something.

Let me get this strait. Fresh Bistro has chosen not to provide parking for their guests. The parking lot management has made signs that clearly state the parking lot is not for Fresh Bistro customers. And these “other businesses” that are paying for the parking lot to be managed and limited parking spaces are at fault? Your rant is a joke.

And on a side note, the ticket may or may not be enforceable. I know that our parking management group @ work (for game days) do not enforce tickets left on cars. However, they are collecting a revenue stream from the paying patrons. But I do know that I have gotten a ticket before (at the US Bank parking lot off of California) and that ticket did end up being enforceable. I had a collection calling me all of the time and it nearly affected my credit by not paying the ticket when I first received it.

Other apps besides most of the aforementioned would be:

Snap Tell- you take a picture of a Book or CD/DVD and it will tell you the current online price listings, local price listings so you can determine who has the best price. Saves me a bundle for school books.

iTranslate- is another great one because you can enter in a desired phrase into the app and it will not only show you the text, it will also pronouce it for you so this is good for me when I have non-english speaking patients and I don’t have a clue on how to pronounce a phrase…

Cigarette smoke is a highly concentrated miasma of toxic chemicals that can be harmful outside when non-smokers are within 30 feet of a smoker. It is much more concentrated than other sources of pollution in the ambient air. A few smokers together make even more smoke ad thus increase the concentration of toxins. States and municipalities across the US and abroad are passing outdoor smoking bans (including in parks and on beaches) so that non-smokers do not have to be exposed to sidestream smoke outside because it is harmful. Even New York City is discussing a smoking ban in its public parks. In some cities in California it is now illegal to smoke anywhere on public streets. Again, the Surgeon General has clearly stated that NO amount of exposure to cigarette smoke is safe. Thousands of non-smokers die every year from exposure to it. So I support the efforts of people who want to have a choice not to breathe this toxic smoke.

And where does all the money go that the state(s) make off of the sales of cigarettes, gambling, liquor, lottery, etc.? When CA became a non-smoking state I went outside of an establishment out into the parking lot. The valet attendant told me that I couldn’t smoke on their property so I had to walk out onto the street. More than 50 yards away from the front door. Yet I was a paying customer…I felt like a 3rd class citizen and when I went back a year later after the smoking ban went into effect I decided to stop in only to find that it was no longer in business and just a vacant piece of property. I asked about what had happened to this “local” watering hole and was told they were “fined” out of business. If cigarettes are no longer allowed in bars/restaurants then why are they still allowed to sell them….think about it.

well I understand the frustration, you must understand the situation that the other businesses are put in, they have limited parking that is theirs.. 5, 10 , 15 min… doesn’t matter, it could possibly mean a space gone for their customer.

    .

While it’s easy to be mad at the actual owners of the parking lot, how about being upset at the the establishment you went to for not providing adequate parking for their customers.

    .

I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago in bellevue, once I noticed the sign, I realized I was in the wrong, paid the ticket and learned my lesson.

I use to be able to buy Canadian at the banks. I am sure if you call your bank they will tell you if they do it and if you need to give them a days notice.

Well, there’s always the airport. Also, I think you can get foreign currency at any bank, with advance notice. OR maybe you need to be a customer. I have done foreign transactions at Sterling Bank in Burien – I am also a customer.

I’m curious to hear from those who have been to Mashiko’s since they went sustainable. Were there any “wow” surprises (aside from the normal “wow”s of course)? Was there anything that didn’t go over so well? I’ll be venturing over soon, especially once you all get me salivating :)

“Something to consider: people who smoke aggressively, annoying those who find it offensive or irritating, are building a constituency for legislation further restricting smoking.”

And how is that even possible? The only thing more restrictive than the current anti-smoking anti-tobacco crusade in Washington, would be to outlaw tobacco completely.

    Ever heard of Al Capone?

On September 9, some half-dozen Oregon physicians representing a variety of medical specialties held a town hall meeting at Seattle’s Langston Hughes Center. The doctors—who are mad as hell at the current unhealthy state of affairs—were in town promoting their vision of what the American health care system should be. Calling themselves the Mad As Hell Doctors Tour, they’re on a road trip that started a week earlier in Sequim and will finish in Washington, D.C. on October 1, after visiting 27 cities across the country.

Too bad the local evening news didn’t open with a story about the event. Apparently it wasn’t sensational enough for them. (There were no gun-toting rednecks lurking ominously outside, no Fox News zombies screeching about socialist plots.) But then, these doctors aren’t shooting for fifteen minutes of fame—they’re just giving us their take on the health care system, along with some (gasp!) facts. They’re telling us the truth, because they think we can handle it.

The centerpiece of the Langston Hughes meeting was a video the doctors had made (to see it, go to http://www.ourailinghealthcare.com/) followed by a panel discussion. The doctors on the panel had between them over 250 years of medical practice, and one of the things they have decided, in those 250 years, is that the business model that’s come to dominate American medicine is actually preventing doctors from caring for their patients as they were trained to do. Plus, it’s outrageously expensive and inefficient. This peculiar health-for-profit system of ours, besides failing to making us healthy, will soon make us broke as well. It is estimated hundreds of thousands of families will go bankrupt because of medical bills over the next few years.

But what does the term “business model” mean, exactly? It refers to our whole money-driven system, from the doctors (who are forced to act more like accountants than caregivers), to insurance and pharmaceutical companies (who are more beholden to their stockholders than patients), to so-called not-for-profit hospitals that bill their rooms at thousands of dollars per night.

So far, in this debate, nobody has really questioned the right of corporations to make big profits off the sick. Yet even the most blindly market-oriented person can see that doctors and hospitals don’t represent a “market,” where consumers can freely pick and choose among products. After all, deciding whether to get medical treatment is not like deciding whether to buy an iPod or a latte. When a woman is pregnant, she’s not going to comparison shop among different obstetricians to get the best “value” for her money, nor can she “hold out” until the going rate for deliveries drops to what she can afford. When a child breaks an arm, his parents can’t put off going to the emergency room until the next paycheck arrives.

When we’re sick we need to be able to seek immediate help from health care providers, and we have a right to expect that these providers will act in our interest, not the interest of accountants or shareholders.

Are you starting to see the disconnect between health care and capitalist economics? Good. Join the Canadians, the British, the Swedes, the Australians, and a majority of the world’s other industrialized countries, countries that have better health care than we do. That is . . . by any measure other than profitability.

In a particularly odd twist of fate, it turns out that even Iraqis and Afghans have a more inclusive system of health coverage than Americans. Paid for of course by . . . you guessed it . . . your tax dollars! (Where were the teaboogers when that spending bill was passed? Hmm?)

Health care used to be seen as a public service and doctors were viewed as professionals, and even treated as members of our extended family. It used to be said “doctors aren’t good businessmen” and the Mad As Hell Doctors think that’s a good thing. They don’t want to be good businessmen; they want to be good doctors. And we should be on their side. Doctors have enough to worry about already. Making money for stockholders is not something we want our doctors worrying about, is it?

The Mad As Hell Doctors are advocating single-payer health insurance (“Medicare for all”) as the first step in more comprehensive reform. Toward that end they advise us to call our senators and representatives in Congress. Call Senator Murray at 202-224-2621, Senator Cantwell at 202-228-0514, and Congressman McDermott at 202-225-7761and the Congressional Switchboard 202-224-3121. Tell our politicians that America needs a government-run single-payer system like Canada’s, because single payer is the only system that will take the profit motive completely out of health care. Tell them the Mad As Hell Doctors sent you.

Bluebird: SideWALKS are used for the safe transport of people (non-motorized equip), whether it be bicyclists, joggers, or walkers. Stop dwelling on the nit picky part of statements and understand the real issue.

And 25 feet from the storefront law is 25 feet in front of ANY store front so you have to perpendicular to the establishment which means in the parking lane or the travel lane of the road…Just sayin’

Bump — great information and reminder, Lurleen; Thanks!

One slight modification the last step in “track your mail ballot” ends with signature verification. It doesn’t tell you when YOUR vote is counted. When you think about it, you don’t want it to be able to do that — if it could, it would be attaching your name to your “confidential” ballot. :-)

    the iPhone continues to rule…

Yesterday I started a new Math class and needed a scientific calculator. After getting ready to go to Radio Shack to buy one, it occurred to me that I could maybe find an app. and that it would probably be cheaper than buying one…. So not only is there an app., it comes on your phone, for free! It’s the regular calculator turned to landscape mode. And there is a step by step tutorial on Apple’s app. page. Do wonders never cease? lol!

It’s kinda fun to play with, too. :)

    SchmitzParkDad –

What an interesting possibility; I wonder what the schools’ PTSA’s would think of it? Maybe track their leadership down and open a discussion with them?

I’m glad for the SP kids and families that the disrespectful jitterbugs seem to have quieted down. What you and your group have been trying to do is wonderful; you are definitely making all of WS a better place, even if it’s pretty darn great already, because you stepped up to the plate. Thanks and I wish you success in moving your project to other schools.

I would like to thank the neighborhood and the community for keeping an eye on this elementary school over the past week. We have gone a whole week without a graffiti tagging. That might not seem like a big deal, but this particular elementary school previously was tagged 3 our of the 4 past weeks. It is a big deal to the children (and parents) to arrive at school in the morning and see the walls free of graffiti. I understand that West Seattle High School and Arbor Heights Elementary School have been tagged simultaneously with Schmitz Park Elementary. Perhaps we can also do citizen patrols around those schools to help them stay graffiti-free as well. West Seattle children deserve to be able to attend schools without graffiti.

Just saw that the Famous Footwear in Westwood is closing. When I inquired about it I was told that they are leaving due to a dramatic rent increase, and that a Washington State Liquor store is moving in. I will miss Famous Footwear and am not that trilled that a liquor store is moving into the neighborhood. I’m curious if this is a “done deal”.

I’m trying not to give up hope. The other bills all have a public option in them and I’m still hopeful the final bill will include one.

There’s not much point to reform without a public option, since all we’ll have is a mandate for everyone to become clients of the big insurance companies, with no mechanism to keep costs down. Sure, they’ll have to cover everybody, but they’ll still be free to gouge you. So once again our Congress has put the interests of the big money contributors before the people they are supposed to represent. The three Democrats that voted against both versions of a public option in the Senate Finance Committee bill are Baucus, Lincoln, and Conrad. I plan to remember those names and work toward their removal when they’re up for re-election. This issue and the banking issues have shown how utterly corrupt our legislators are. It’s shameful.

I guess what we really need is campaign finance reform.

I hope this is ok if I put this here because I have just dealt with one of the most honest repair guys ever. I have a Blu-ray DVD player with Netflix capabilities and to cut to the chase it needed some wiring issues resolved. Caleb came over and spent 2 hours trying to figure things out and this was new to him. He said he was not going to charge for this trip as he would like to call Samsung and come back. Not only did he come back bright and early the next day, he had called Samsung, charged me HALF of what he initially quoted me. He is a new business and a very nice, honest person. I was truly impressed and thought I would share. His business is called West Seattle Computer Repair. 206.375.9457.
