Burien Solar Punk Festival 2024
Aug 10 @ 12:00 pm – 11:00 pm

If there is one simple fact that may just change your thoughts on renewable power, it’s this one.

In a single hour, the amount of power from the sun that strikes the Earth is more than the entire world consumes in a year.

“Solar Punk” is the festival theme, which envisions a future where community and technology are integrated to create a self-sustaining system. In this event, attendees will learn about alternative self-sustaining ways to work and power their daily lives. It is an iconic one-day event that celebrates the best of Burien and empowers the community by bringing eco-friendly businesses together to showcase what they do and connect them to the community as potential employers. Business, Arts, and Culture are the three most powerful drivers of community participation and engagement in Burien and the pillars upon which the festival is based. The proceeds from The Burien Solar Punk Festival will be utilized to support: Key Tech Labs Green Jobs Expo, Mini Jobs Fair, Small Business Expo, funds for a new micro solar system, and stipends for the youth Green Pre-Apprenticeship Program participants.

Solar Punk Festival attendees young and old will get to experience various Green Technologies. Three examples are our an air to water generator, solar microgrid system and a FarmBot. The air to water generator extracts moisture from the air and converts it into water. The solar microgrid system generates energy from the sun. The FarmBot is an open-source CNC machine that can be programmed to water, seed and weed automatically. Come on and join us because “The Future Is NOW and The Future is GREEN! “

(Thanks to Matt Hedlund of Wanderlust Nursery, a West Seattleite who’s a vendor at the fair, for telling us about it.)

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Aug 13 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

A continuation of Henry VI part 1, Shakespeare’s chronicles of the Wars of the Roses. England is embroiled in political turmoil as the ineffectual King Henry VI struggles to maintain control amidst growing dissent and power struggles among nobles. The rise of the ambitious Richard, Duke of York, sets the stage for a bloody conflict for the throne, as factions vie for supremacy and betrayal lurks at every turn. passionate about collecting our community’s gently used clothing items to support
children and adults with disabilities. We believe being back in West Seattle will have
both a sustainable and mission-led impact on the community for generations to come.
A big thank you to our partners WaFd, Value Village, and PrintItForward.net for being
instrumental in our return to West Seattle!” said Tess Connor, Chief Growth &
Operating Officer at Northwest Center.

Donations made to Big Blue Truck support Northwest Center’s education and

Join us for a summer evening, not too early, not too late and a lotta joy in the space to grieve together. This is our 2nd grief dance party- the first since 2019. it’s time!!! Join us for music, a space to move your grief in a healthy and comfortable way.

This event will be held at the warehouse, with lots of ventilation. Masks are provided and encouraged.

In July, we had a sewer main break at our community deathcare home and the repair cost was $20,000. We are trying to recoup those costs bit by bit to keep offering the community care we currently do. Please share this widely with folks. There will be a silent auction of art.

Let’s dance it out.

Big Blue Truck in West Seattle @ WaFd Bank lot
Aug 18 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Big Blue Truck, a division of Seattle nonprofit
Northwest Center, is excited to announce the opening of a new donation site in West
Seattle. Beginning Saturday, August 3, 2024, community members can donate gently
used clothing, textiles, and small household goods at WaFd, 4102 California Ave SW,
98116.

The donation site will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
“We are thrilled to return to West Seattle! The Big Blue Truck was a popular donation site
in the heart of West Seattle until Covid forced its closure in 2020. Now West Seattleites
once again have a convenient weekend drop-off location just steps from the heart of
Alaska Junction,” said Michael Scalzo, SVP of Operations at Big Blue Truck. “We are
passionate about collecting our community’s gently used clothing items to support
children and adults with disabilities.

Donations made to Big Blue Truck support Northwest Center’s education and
employment programs for children and adults with disabilities. By donating, residents
not only help children and adults with disabilities but also promote environmental
sustainability through recycling and reusing goods.

Big Blue Truck welcomes donations of:

 Gently used clothing
 Shoes
 Books
 Textiles- including towels and sheets
 Small household items

For more information about what to donate or the work Big Blue Truck supports,
