Hi All: I try to stay away from commenting about any dog owner/dog behavior issues, because, well, there seems to be an entitlement complex going around.

I will tell you this, until you have been threatened by an off-leash pit bull, rottweiler or, for god sakes, bull mastiff, you haven’t lived. It has happened on way too many occasions on the beach at Lowman Beach Park. Did you know that rottweilers can be very territorial. Far be it from me to challenge them again when I walk my sailboard to the beach to go sailing… hmmm… yep, actually don’t do that anymore… Just settle for, I don’t know, a walk somewhere else.

I don’t have enough fingers and toes on which to count how many times multiple, concurrent off-leash dogs have literally invaded picnicker sites trying to carry off food, or just plain out of control.

So, I have a sense of perspective about off-leash. I love seeing dogs chase down tossed balls and frisbees, but I think owners should police themselves as to the number of off-leash dogs in a small neighborhood parks, such as Lowman Beach Park, so that not more than one or two are off-leash at any given time.

And, for sure, I’m sorry, I really don’t appreciate spending time in the water (I sailboard, paddle and swim in the sound — hey, I am duck…), and swimming with the dogs is pretty obnoxious, especially when, well, I won’t tell you all the stinky stories… you get my drift.

The problem is that as one dog owner said to me “Everyone is doing it, why not?” My favorite experience was rigging the sail to my sailboard in Lowman Beach Park, sitting on the ground, facing my sail, and pulling back to downhaul it, when up walks a bull mastiff off leash and walks right onto my sail facing me at face level. Yep, the woman who was walking the off-leash bull mastiff didn’t do a thing to remove the dog… I had to ask her to remove the dog from being on my sail… ever seen the indents of claws from a bull mastiff standing on your sail? Interesting experience, to say the least.

I am thinking that maybe dog owners might want to respect non-dog owners and their right to certain uses of park land, maybe even quiet enjoyment of a sunset, the sounds of water on the shoreline, you know, something other than dogs barking and threatening you as you use the beach.

Just a thought… or two… or three. Respect others and their rights to certain uses of park land. Don’t overwhelm them with your off-leash dogs, and don’t set up safety hazard issues. I can’t tell you how many times off leash dogs have terrorized and bitten local feral and even non-feral cats in the Lowman Beach Park neighborhood.

    Some things to think about…

Simple solution, tie about 10 leashes together so that it spans about 30-40 feet. As good as the little guy being on a leash and not sure if there is a regulation that the leash must be a certain length. Don’t get mad, get even!

    homer…

there is a regulation and it is 6 ft though you are seldom ticketed for exceeding it if your dog is clearly under control…

it’s that clearly under control thing that so often seems to be missing.

Hi ellenater: I am not sure who you are referring to as “you guys,” but, if it is me, then let me know so I can respond. As a possible preemptive strike… here’s my take.

Yah, it was obvious that this thread was an attempt to make light of the dog-leash issue, as if it is a “dead horse.” Did I get that right?

My response is exactly because of that attempt to “make light” of the allegedly silly issue of dogs off leash. The issue won’t go away in my neighborhood until dog owners get it that there is respectful behavior for other people’s rights and space and there is the other kind of behavior — and way too much of it.

It isn’t like jaywalking, really. When you jaywalk, you take your own life into your hands. When you overwhelm others with your rude dog, or your intrusive dog, or your threatening dog, or your dangerous dog, you are screwing with other people’s rights to quiet enjoyment, safety and health.

Think of it as someone constantly knocking at your front door, but never intending to talk to you. They have a right to do that, right? Yep. No specific law against knocking on your front door. Tell me how you would respond. Or, how about the neighbor who plays really loud music most of the day, but respects the law for the most part. You happen to work a night shift and need sleep in the day, and even your earplugs don’t work, because the vibrations make it through the floor between your apartments. Legal, right? Intrusive, rude, unnecessary (unless the guy or gal upstairs has a hearing problem — ever heard of earphones). You get my drift.

Those who have less dangerous and out of control dogs who feel that off-leash is no big problem — well, folks, you set the example that facilitates those less smart folks with the more dangerous dogs to say things like “everyone else is doing it.”

Until dog owners get over the attitude that “it is no big deal” it will be “a big deal.”

sorry but no; it had nothing to do with dogs and leashes and everything to do with internet forum posts/posters.

the making light part though is dead on…dead like a dead horse.

So Pdieter… you are making light of certain posters and posts? Does that mean you don’t take people seriously, or that some people’s opinions suck? Is that it?

So, I got it wrong that you weren’t making light of the post about off-leash dogs… because you say “it had everything to do with forum posts?”

Maybe, if you could be specific about what you say, it would help. You mean the subject matter of the original post? You mean the comments to the original post? You mean the replies to the comments? Or, do you mean a specific forum user is the target of your comments?

If it is an inside joke, let us know what it means. Thanks.

nope just making light of the general “knickers in a twist” style of internet posting.

PDieter: Yah, knickers can get twisted, for sure. The internet can be such a steamy place.

Hey, popped over to your website. Awesome! Awesome remodel. Totally cool!
