LisaParticipantInstead of heading to the mall this Thanksgiving weekend… why not keep it in West Seattle and show support to our local/small business owners?! Living Local! and supporting our community is the best gift we can give each other!
Happy Holidays!!

MercyMoiParticipantI agree! This morning I actually closed a Christmas shopping browser thinking I should just take a walk through the Junction instead. Why send away my money when I can keep it in the neighborhood?
Happy Holidays!

angelescrestParticipantCan Sorel boots be bought locally? (Besides/possibly Target)
November 24, 2010 at 5:33 pm #709155
YardvarkMemberAbsolutely.
With Black Friday, you have the horrible crowds, parking arguments, stress, and overspending.
By doing your shopping in town, though, you meet your neighbors, support the health of our neighborhoods, get to know the businesses who donate a lot to local charities, maybe talk with some entreprenuers who are just starting up. And, the coolest thing about it, is that there’s tons of really unique shops here in West Seattle. They make the Mall shops look like bland porridge in comparison.
To me, the mall was always a punishment that I used to have to endure. By just buying stuff from the local shops, I actually look forward to holiday shopping now.

ghar72ParticipantTwo great opportunities for you to keep it local this weekend:
1) The Highland Park Improvement Club is hosting a holiday bazaar this Saturday, from 11-4. Over 20 tables of handmade goodness with be available for you to peruse and purchase. They’re located at 1116 SW Holden. Here’s a link to info about vendors and the event:
2) American Express has Small Business Saturday this weekend. If you sign up on their site, you get a $25 credit on your card when you shop at a small business which accepts Amex. You have to spend at least $25, but hey, that’s a free $25! You have to enroll your Amex card to get the credit. Link here:

They’re also on FB.
Happy Local Holiday Shopping!

herongrrrlParticipantAnd don’t forget the Duwamish Longhouse Native Craft Fair on Friday and Saturday. (Details are on the WSB Holiday Sale/Bazaar list!)

hooper1961Memberyes supporting local businesses makes sense.
it would be nice if the metropolitan market would at least try to have competitive prices. their prices are obscenely high as compared to qfc and safeway; in many cases double what the competition charges!

miwsParticipanthooper, you are comparing large, corporately owned, with more buying power and sweetheart deals with product manufacturers/vendors, to local, family owned, that don’t have those luxuries, at least not to the same extent as the big guys.

WSBKeymasterMM is a WSB sponsor though I would say the same thing if you had said that about oh say Thriftway, which is not … Metropolitan Market (and West Seattle Thriftway, and PCC, which also is a sponsor) are locally owned. QFC and Safeway are owned by out-of-state megacorporations.

SEPARATE NOTE: In addition to what’s been mentioned before, a couple things:
1. There will be local craftspeople and service providers participating in Sustainable West Seattle’s Money-Free Shopping Spree on Saturday. That form of exchange is a way of “keeping it local,” too.
http://www.sustainablewestseattle.org
2. By late tonight, look for the first edition of a special Holiday Business/Shopping Guide that we are putting together – we circulated an offer to local businesses to advertise on a special page, separate from our regular ads, to further showcase local businesses this holiday season. Will announce it here and on the main page when it’s up. Also note the WSB Coupons page:
https://westseattleblog.com/coupons
Regular sponsors are offered the chance to have coupons there at no extra charge. And unlike some of the biggest “deal” providers, that means not a cent goes out of town/state.
The Junction also showcases its businesses at http://wsjunction.org
Happy Thanksgiving! Back to cooking …

hooper1961Memberit would be nice to see MM at least make an effort to be competitive. the MM has failed to capitalize on safeway closed for re-construction.

KatherineLParticipantWhy would MM’s wholesale costs be so much higher than everyone else’s?
November 26, 2010 at 3:30 am #709164
austinMemberMy guess is that it has something to do with the speed limit on admiral way.

hammerheadParticipantI am a local business person and have been blessed with business I have gained. Most of the local shops don’t sell what I need or want, not to mention the prices very high or to eclectic.
I did get my turkey from the Swinery and holy s**t it was awesome, now it was EXPENSIVE but this is something I wanted.
I agree MM is way over priced and if people shop there and are willing to pay that then great.
