    Hey all!

    Here’s our current list:

For Our Upcoming Pancake Breakfast and Fundraiser (uncertain of exact date):

    Pancake mix.

    Syrup.

    Fruit toppings for pancakes.

Powedered sugar. and other stuff that’s tasty when plopped on a stack-o-cakes.

    Tents:

Our greatest need right now in the way of tents, is two person sized and family sized, although I’m sure that single peron sized would be welcome as well.

I heard that we had ten intakes yesterday alone. On my 9:00-Noon security shift, the other security guy and I took in four singles and one family!

Also, we are still in need of construction supplies:

    Pier blocks w/adjustable saddles

1/2″ T-111 plain face siding plywood.

    2X4’s & 2X6’s of any length.

And, food, glorious food is always welcome!

    Thanks!

    Mike

Can you use laundry detergent? I know that you don’t have running water so I was guessing people would occasionally go to laundromats when they could?

This is conventional laundry detergent (machine wash, not handwash) that i can’t use since it’s scented.

Yes they will take it. If you know where it is you can drop it off at the security table

Was just informed this morning, that in addition to two person and family tents, we need a large “community” type tent as well.

    Thanks!

I haven’t read all the NV posts so, if the answer to my question lies elsewhere, please direct me there..

I am curious as to what the residents of NV are doing to not be a resident anymore. Meaning, are they getting job training, working, etc.? I am not opposed to helping out my fellow humans but, I don’t think all this generosity will continue for months, years to come.

I understand that people fall on hard times and need help in one way or another. But when does relying on the giving of others hinder ones motivation to do anything to get out of their current situation?

Please don’t blast me for asking these questions; I am not trying to discriminate against the NV residents, rather learn more about their potential future.

Mike…hammerhead has a connection for pallets. How many do you need in general figures? I can let her know by email, or maybe you could contact her at 206-972-3557. She’ll be periodically checking with me today. Right now she’s on her way to an adopt-a-thon.

dizzle, this has been covered in previous discussions on here. Many of the residents are working, but not enough to live independently. Those that aren’t are looking. Some forum members have hired some residents as day workers. They are eager to work and earn money. One of the forum members, hammerhead, has hired a few of the women to help with her housecleaning business.

If you are genuinely curious about Nickelsville and it’s residents, I would suggest that you visit them, take a tour of the campsite, and see what goes on there. These are not people who would rather just have a handout. Sure, just as in any community, there will be a diversity among the residents. But the economy sucks, and this may be more longterm for some than they would like.

Very well said, Jan — and thanks to dizzle for raising the question I know they’re working on a sustainable model and a lot of people are working now as they can. (Two guys are here today making our “drought garden” into less of a weed patch.

“But when does relying on the giving of others hinder ones motivation to do anything to get out of their current situation?”

This kind of thinking always baffles me. Whatever your current life situation is if you’re a person with an income and a place to live, would you trade it to live in a tent on a muddy hillside with no running water, no electricity,no food refrigeration, no car, a portapotty in parking lot and no showers? If you wouldn’t (and, correct me if I’m wrong, but I doubt you would) why would you make the judgement that others would be happy to live so and be “unmotivated” to try to improve their situation. If you really want to find that point where accepting help from others messes with your “motivation” I suggest selling or giving away everything you own and moving in down at NV.

Dizzle, this is not intended to blast you

personally (I’m using the royal “you”) and please don’t take it so, but I am truly baffled by people who think in such a way about their fellow humans.
