mpentoParticipantHi I remember the topic of stolen bins popped up here a few times and I did a quick search for the topic but was wondering if there was any conclusion that it is the recycle collection company doing some kind of bin change or just random thievery? I put out my yard waste and recycle bins this morning. Two large green bins and only the empty yard waste was there this evening. I’m wondering if it is just easier to take the bin rather than be seen rummaging for personal information? The house number and street are on the lid. Anyway I’m in Arbor heights. I’ll check with the company tomorrow. I would wonder why they did not take both bins if it was theft unless one was not empty when they came around or they didn’t need the grass?

MousePotatoMemberI don’t think it’s the collection company. Our recycle bin disappeared a few months ago as well. I searched our alley for it but did not find one with our address on it. After calling Seattle Public Utilities we had a new container the next day. They said that they would not have removed one themselves without replacing it with a new one at the same time. Sounds like someone decided to roll yours away like they did ours. It’s a head scratcher…. Call the utility to confirm….

MargLMemberOk – here’s another interesting twist. We’re also in Arbor Heights and today we saw a small moving van, I -think- it was an Enterprise Rent-a-truck, with the back door rolled up moving slowly down our street. It was full of stacks of recycle bins and garbage bins. It stopped in front of our house, moved on, then backed up and stopped in front of our house again.
I think it was a crew sent out to replace bins. Last week we got a new yardwaste bin (swapped out an old 64-gallon bin for the new 95-gallon bin – CHECK YOUR BIN SIZE AND BILL FOR EXTRA CHARGES)
and I think we were probably on still on their list to get a new bin.
They moved on without doing anything here but your container might have been taken by them…
Call SPU to get a new bin but in general I don’t think SPU and the collection folks communicate very well.

biankatParticipantOur green recycling bin disappeared one day. I waited a day before calling the city to see if it would turn up. When I called, the gal said that sometimes the bins accidentally fall in the truck. She scheduled a new blue bin to be delivered.

DuckitudeMemberHi: There was a post a while back in which I noted that I had a video of a worker pushing my recycle bin into the recycle truck itself along with the rest of the trash. We had been wondering in our neighborhood why bins were disappearing and did not have an answer until the video confirmed it.
“Allegedly” the bins that are being recycled (that is trashed) are bins that don’t fit the new truck lifts and get broken while lifting. However, they don’t volunteer to replace those bins. They leave it up to you to figure out what happened and ask for a new bin. Ridiculous….
My guess is that this is a windfall for whoever is manufacturing the new blue replacement bins. Why would they buy trucks with mechanisms that would destroy the old bins? I don’t think it is just wear and tear issues.
At any rate, that’s the story. Missing a bin? Order a new one. 99% chance it was trashed along with its contents by the recycle people.

moxilotMemberMargL- Waste Management has a company subcontracted to do the repair work on broken plastic bins, and that’s most likely the truck that you saw. They were probably looking for an address on their fulfillment sheet.

MargLMemberYeah – I double checked with the Husband and he said it was the same kind of truck that replaced our yard waste bin last week.

BBGuestMemberYesterday I came home to a notice on my mail box that my can had been taken and would be replaced. There were boxes to check for reasons (like hazardous waste)but nothing had been checked. Just a hand written note on the bottom saying another one would be delivered. Thanks for the thread… I was beginning to wonder what the heck I put in there that might be hazardous!
