Do you have one yet? Are you going to get one? Why? Why not? Nope, I don’t work for Apple — I’m just curious about WS early adaptors. Full disclosure: If I had the money, I’d be in line (virtual or real) right now. :-)

I continually read reports from high tech writers that their advice is to wait until after the firt release. There will be updates and improvements in future versions. I suppose if I had the resources I would be a willing guinea pig; but I would wait.

I think it is a neat device but I need something that will do more than media consumption so I am going after a laptop to bring along when I go shooting pictures. It is great for surfing, watching movies reading books. I don’t think a first generation is much of a problem with apple products.

Yes, I got one Saturday – I’m the ultimate Apple “fanboy” so had to have one.

It’s very nice and (as with everything apple) very intuitive. The reviews are about right, imo. Great , vibrant screen, very responsive and “snappy”. We have a couple of notebooks and I already find myself “grabbing” the ipad to check email, stocks, facebook, whatever. It sits on the table kind of like a cordless phone – just waiting to be used.

It’s early, but there are some pretty good apps too – that will only improve with time of course.

It’s a little heavier than I imagined – at 1.5 lbs you would think that would be impossible, but it kind of is. Cross-legged or legs crossed is the best way to use it. Once you get that down it’s a snap.

V2 might have a front facing camera for skype, video chat so FP is correct – better to wait for the Christmas update.

Could be a game-changer or a flop at this point, but only time will tell.

Selling 300,000 on day one is a decent start though.

Edit: I heard a fairly convincing story about how it might get very favorable reviews from the big boys (NYTs, etc) since they are hoping it helps save old media.

Got one Saturday by pre-order. I am not an Apple fan don’t have a Mac nor an iPhone. I love this iPad and my itouch. My touch is the greatest invention as I can take it everywhere. Can watch tv/news on the ipad at work during breaks. Looking forward to more aps written specifically for it. I’m a gadget guy according to family and friends. Battery life is fantastic as I was on it most of Sunday and it lasted the whole day.

@AlkiRagdoll – if you have kids (or even if you don’t) the “starwalk” app is insane. Read the reviews, but it is really cool. $4.99, I think.

Saw it on Saturday at the Apple store. I honestly think they’re a bit silly; they look like a giant version of the iPhones my husband and I have. We also have a MacBook, an iMac, and he’ll have a work MacBook Pro very soon. He still thinks the iPad is cool, and wants one. Lucky for me, he’s not an early adopter, and will wait until at least second gen. before giving in. He may love his gadgets, but at least he’s discriminating and smart about them. (Looking on the bright side!)

Edit: if we didn’t each already have an iPhone 3GS and the aforementioned laptops/desktop, I could see the iPad as a very welcome addition, so I’m not criticizing those who chose to purchase it. It is cool for what it is and would definitely be useful if I didn’t already have gadgets to do exactly what the iPad does and more.

I’ve definitely got a 3G model on order. My iPhone has been great. No doubt one of the best smartphones I’ve ever owned. But the size can be limiting sometimes. I think the iPad is going to be a much better vehicle for consuming digital media. I’m not so sure it is going to effectively rival my other Macs in terms of content creation. But I’m most excited about the level to which I think the iPad is going to be a game-changer for electronic versions of periodicals and newspapers.

    Hi all:

In reply to the original post:

No, I do not have one yet.

No, I can assure you that I will never get one.

    If I wanted something semi-portable I would buy a nice, light-weight laptop.

I use to own a powerbook and mac mini several years ago but scrapped them for PCs (I’ve been a PC user for 20+ years and used mac’s as a experiment).

Viewing photography portfolios on it will be awesome with it’s vibrant display. Showing perspective clients your work on this display versus a laptop or even better LCDs can’t beat the color on it. Deep blacks, brighter whites, come on!

I’ve thought about getting one as a ‘every day sitting in front of the tv laptop’ but my sole requirement is it to multitask, so I can SSH and have a web browser. If the magazine publishers can establish an inexpensive pricing scheme, I maybe even more likely to purchase. If they drop the 16gb model altogether, that’d be nice too.

The sooner we can migrate off of Flash and Adobe owned products for major content, I feel, the better. HTMLv5 is adoption is raising because of the iPad, which is good.

I didn’t think I would purchase an iPod Touch until I literally fondled one in the Apple Store: game over.

Now I am smarter: Just don’t touch an iPad, and I am safe; I must stay away from the Apple stores or people who own one. But they sure look nice. I wonder if Amazon will sell more Kindles or iPads by Xmas?

I understand the comparison of, oh its just a big ipod touch. For me, I am using my iphone more and more everyday… and even before the iPad was announced, my wish was that my iphone had a bigger screen. Wish granted.

If you look at the price of a Kindle, $489 for the DX, I think the iPad is at a great price point.

    some great initial software:

Sketchbook Pro – “professional-grade” paint and drawing application

Warpgate HD – space exploration, trading, battles and quests.

I’ve always been an early adopter when it comes to this stuff, and, as big and huge of a MacFanBoy that I am, I’m putting on the ‘WAIT A YEAR OR SO” list. It’s really not ready yet. It’s obvious what the amazing potential of this device is, but it has a long way to go until the App developers really kick in, and the next gen or two of chips in the units get installed (multi-processor, faster speeds, etc.).

3G is on its way out. 4G networks are already starting to appear. The next gens of iPad will have cameras, multi tasking OS, etc.. Save your money and wait. It’ll be worth it.
