AmyOParticipantMichner’s “Alaska”–super detailed writing or “The Last Run: The True Story of Rescue and Redemption on the Alaska Seas” by Todd Lewan. I bought both for my Dad’s birthday and he absolutely loved them; especially “Last Run”.

addParticipantA Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Hilarious! And also quite interesting historical info about the development of the Appalachian Trail.

KBearParticipantThe actual Appalachian trail or the one in Argentina?

addParticipantLOL – it took me a few minutes to figure out your message KBear!! I was thinking, “huh? there’s an Appalachian Trail in Argentina??” Apparently only for certain southern senators.

JasperbluParticipantRIVETING BOOK “Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster” by Jon Krakauer
Krakauer also wrote “Into the Wild”, “Eiger Dreams” and “Under the Banner of Heaven”, all equally mesmerizing!

dhgParticipantAt the risk of starting something that takes a long time to finish: Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian. It’s the story of England at sea, 1812, pretty faithfully recreated. O’Brian wrote 21 (or so) sequels. Usually I tire of an author after a few novels but his command of both the English language and character kept me hooked to the end.

KBearParticipantI enjoyed “East of the Mountains” by David Guterson. Much of it takes place around Vantage, Washington, so in addition to being outdoorsy, there’s a lot of local color for those who are familiar with that area.

AmyOParticipantI agree with Jasper’s recommendations–all great books!
