ThirstyMemberWhile I live nearby Alki I don’t frequent the bars all that often. Today a friend is coming “into town” from the mainland Seattle and wants to go to Happy Hour.
Any suggestions?

JanSParticipantlol…well, I personally call this staying on “the island”…soI suppose “mainland Seattle” makes sense :D
and I second Cactus…sit outside on the patio :)

TanDLParticipantIf Cactus is too full, try Fatburger. You can sit outside there as well.

BonnieParticipantNot exactly ON Alki but beautiful view and good food. Marination.

addParticipantI second Marination! Especially if your friend is coming over via water taxi.

trickycooljParticipantMarination’s patio is so much fun on Fri/Sat nights they have a 2nd bar outside! Double their indoor seating on the patio but get there early because it fills up fast with every incoming water taxi of 9 to 5ers. Get there at 6-7pm and it’s quite packed. If the line is out the door for food don’t worry they’re super fast it’s a completely reasonable wait!

TishParticipantI’d love to hear what people think of Cassis as I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet.
My colleagues and I go out to happy hour every Thursday in the West Seattle area so we’ve actually been to most happy hour joints in the area.
Since you’re only asking about the Alki area, I’ll limit my responses to that area of West Seattle only.
Cactus: Decent happy hour selection in terms of food + drinks. It’s also warm inside and they’ll allow you to sit in the dining area for happy hour if you come with a large party (and ask nicely, of course). Of all the happy hour joints in the area, they probably have the largest food + drink selection. Another plus? They have their own underground parking lot! Cost-wise, they are more expensive than Marination but less expensive than Salty’s.
Marination: Food is cheap and fabulous but the drink menu is (slightly) limited and it may be hard to find a table during peak hours (I think they only have 4-5 tables in the indoor area, but there are plenty of tables outside if it isn’t too cold out). Speaking of temperature, expect the indoor area to be COLD during the winter months. They often leave the door the patio area open which I personally hate. So if you pick Marination, just make sure to bring a warm jacket!
Salty’s: Has the same fabulous view as Marination but it’s more upscale. The interior area is warm and toasty. They have plenty of tables with great views of the waterfront to choose from as well as chairs that are placed around their indoor fireplace. The food + drink selection here is pretty extensive, but most food dishes are on the small side. Since this restaurant is more upscale, expect to pay about $5-$10 more per person than you would at other joints in the area. Still, after you’ve had their truffle fries, you may think it’s worth it!
Dukes: I love going to Dukes in the summer for happy hour on their deck, but I don’t necessarily think it’s a great winter happy hour spot. The reason? Seating is pretty limited indoors and like Salty’s, it’s a little on the pricey side. Plus, their happy hour menu is pretty limited. You can get a better happy hour experience elsewhere.
There are a few other places at Alki, but the ones listed above are the most popular. You honestly can’t go wrong if you pick any of them. It just sort of depends on what you’re looking for.
If you want to share more details, I’ll be happy to make a more specific recommendation. Hope this helps!

HappyOnAlkiParticipantLove Cassis — it isn’t a “scene,” but a quieter spot that’s great for when you want to actually talk to your friend. A bowl of mussels and a glass of wine — mais oui!

squareeyesParticipantWe really enjoy Cassis but, until I looked it up just now, didn’t know they have happy hour as we’re always later than 6pm. The HH food menu looks delicious but it doesn’t mention what it offers in terms of beverages.
We caught them on their final Sunday brunch (summer only) a few weeks ago and I think I’ll be first in line when they start them up again. Perfection!

mtnfreakParticipantI vote for the Celtic Swell. A real bar with food and a great view out the front window.

trendyzworldParticipantCome down to the Morgan Junction and check out The Bridge! Love that place. Beveridge Place is also fun and you can bring your dog, if you have one or two. And the restaurants in the immediate area deliver free to BP since they don’t do food!

happy hourParticipantToo funny. I was scrolling to see what’s new and saw ‘happy hour’ I thought you guys were speaking of me.
By the looks of this thread, I must try marination for sure
I know it’s too late but no one mentioned Dukes. Maybe there is a reason I have no clue about.

trickycooljParticipantI tend to go to Dukes when I’m at Southcenter, they do have a great HH for before movies. I guess it’s never on my radar on Alki since there’s so many choices there.
November 20, 2014 at 5:16 pm #818849
squareeyesParticipantI tend not to think of Alki Dukes as a happy hour destination because of how tiny the bar area is, except in summer when the upstairs deck is open. Otherwise I see it as primarily restaurant.
