New Resident, whether we personally knew someone who was directly affected by 911 or not, we were all affected by that tragedy.

I don’t think the person who made that remark meant to say that we weren’t affected, just that our lives have not been impacted in the way the lives of the Iraqi people have.

We were all affected. Our children will look back to where they were on that day the same way i look back to where i was the day kennedy was shot. it is a pivotal turning point in all our lives.

That said, it is important to focus our resulting rage on those who perpetrated that terrorist act.

What would i have done?

I would have pursued the Al Quaida by any and all means possible.

I would have let Pakistan know that it wasn’t ok to harbor them across the border and if neccessary i would have used clandestine surgical strikes… e\whether the Pakistani govt agreed or not.

I would have put pressure on Egypt to stop terrorist dollars from passing through their citizens to terrorist networks around the world.

I would have asked for worldwide assistance in shutting down any banking system willing to harbor funds from know Al Quaida operatives.

I would have immediately hired more middle eastern interpreters in our intelligence community.

I would have funded and followed up with the best medical care and counseling possible for all those who went into the disaster and participated in the cleanup of 911.

i would have taken alesson from England’s many years of dealing with irish terrorists. You don’t persecute the people, you prosecute terrorists.

I would have asked the muslim world to join in condemning senseless acts of violence perpetrated on innocent people.

I would have invested in aid programs around the world for muslim people living in destitution. In short.. i would have killed them with kindness.

I am assuming that you don’t want to know what i wouldn’t have done because that list would take a long time.

My very conservative republican niece once asked me why i supported terrorists when we were discussing the war… her approval.. my condemnation.

I will tell you what i told her. Not supporting the war in Iraq is not unpatriotic. It doesn’t mean i support terrorism. It simply means that i think we should have warred against the terrorists who warred against us… not Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi people.

I fully support our troops. I support actually spending the money to adequately equip them. i think it is a disgrace that families in the states have to hold fundraisers to provide their sons and daughters in the guard with adequate military gear.

I support their families. I support paying them adequately while they are in service. I think it is a disgrace that many of their families are forced to welfare programs just to exist.

I support giving guard members who serve the same kind of benefits we give regular military… all of the same protections as to length and number of tours and the same kind of benefits when they come home.

I support stepping up to the plate and actually providing the kind of services they need when they come home… medical care… housing assistance… job assistance… education benefits…etc.

I support a draft if that is what it will take to stop extending the active status of our soldiers well past their agreed upon discharge dates.

I think if we are going to war… we ought to treat the military who are waging that war for us very well.

I would rather we weren’t there. i would not have put us there. i don’t know if any other president … including our current president’s father… would have done so under the circumstances.

Iraq had nothing to do with 911.

In spite of every justification so far fed to us, that war has nothing to do with 911.

It is time to stop citing 911 it as though it has relevance to the war in Iraq.

I think we owe that to those who lost their lives in a totally senseless act of violence on 911.

We should honor them by responding to what killed them… not by perpetrating some senseless war. how can killing people who had nothing to do with that tragedy ever honor those who lost their lives?

I’m pretty sure WS Montessori doesn’t accept anyone who isn’t yet potty trained, but it was some years ago when I was looking into it. My daughter started at Fauntleroy Children’s Center at 4 mos and stayed there 2-3 days a week for 6 years; they provide childcare through age 12.

When she was an infant, 2 days/week cost about $800/month, but I know it’s gone up since then. In her last year we were paying about $500/month for 3 days/week, including transportation to and from school.

i am a liberal.. the rest of my family is conservative. when we sit down to dinner, we all choose our foods based on personal preference and our converstaion based on political debate.

Needless to say, family dinners can get heated because we don’t all agree and being stubborn none of us can agree simply to disagree.

it is because we all think that everyone in the room is entitled to a point of view and because they make such good points that our conversation gets passionate. Each and every person in the room believes that if the other person just had the facts then they would be bright enough to put two and two together and see reason.

Doesn’t happen. We all have pretty strong opinions. and yet, we continue to try because what we know is that regardless of politics, we are all far more alike than not. and more often than not, we all learn something new.

When it comes to food choices, I don’t choose to cook lobster because regardless of hearing perfectly rational explanations of why that isn’t screaming… i am just plain not comfortable with it.

However, if someone brings lobster… well all bets are off.

So much for my principles ;-)

I enjoy the debate of ideas… because in the end.. the more we talk… the more we find we are all full of wonderful human contradictions… that most of us aren’t comfortable with the scream of the lobster and still most of us aren’t going to pass it up. it’s human nature.

Also, according to Rush Limbaugh, who by the way is no moral beacon (I can’t think of any amongst the republicans for some reason) the right is trying to undo the New Deal programs.

Yes, they’ve already done away with the forty-hour workweek. Sure, there’s no right to privacy anymore. I happen to be happy with the child-labor laws, worker safety laws (actually they don’t go far enough–I’ve breathed in enough asbestos to ensure an early death!) and the robber barons at least gave us a break for awhile. But they too are back.

Bush may not _seem_ like a liar, and just because it’s not about sex please, please don’t think it’s no big deal! The deaths of thousands upon thousands rest squarely on his shoulders.

Morality is not just about sex.

Don’t get me started on the insurance racket.

But as with many cycling opportunities outside of BTW month, I chickened out, and now I wonder what could’ve been…

If you’re in the class now for the first time, care to share how it’s going for you? Are the classes and teachers inspiring, or are you counting the seconds til the torture is over every time? :) Also, what would you say was your cycling level before you started? Would you do it again or recommend it? What type of rider do you think it’s most geared toward? Any other thoughts? Talk to me!

House, what do you mean by Fiscal Conservatism? Because it seems that you and i both call ourselves fiscal conservatives, but i think we mean different things by the term.

Fiscal conservatism: from Wickipedia

“Fiscal conservatism is a political phrase term used in North America to attack government spending and advocate instead lower spending and a lower federal debt; it may also include higher taxes in order to lower the debt. It does not necessarily denote advocacy of free market economics as a whole, and is a distinct concept from that of neo-liberalism.

A major cause of the American Revolution was “No Taxation without Representation.” The Americans insisted that their historic rights as Britons entitled them to a voice in setting tax policies, which Britain denied. The issue was not the tax itself or its size, but approval by elected representatives.”

This definition pretty closely resembles how i use the term. I believe that fiscal conservatism requires using public money according to public desires in the most efficient way possible. I suppose it is possible that my stance could more accurately be called fiscal responsibility… but still i think fiscal conservatism fits.

According to this definition, you and i would only disagree on how the money should be spent and thus would battle to have representative who support our views elected.

However, Wikipedia went further:

“Fiscal Conservatism was rhetorically promoted during the presidency of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989). During his tenure, Reagan touted economic policies that became known as Reaganomics. Based on the theory of supply-side economics, Reagan cut income taxes, raised social security taxes, deregulated the economy, and instituted a tight monetary policy to stop inflation. Reagan favored reducing the size and scope of government (see limited government), proposing a balanced federal budget.”

This Reagonomics definition is more in keeping with how the term is used most often these days.

According to Wikipedia, this is how that turned out:

“However, by the end of Reagan’s second term the national debt held by the public ballooned from 26 percent of Gross Domestic Product in 1980 to 41 percent in 1989, the highest level since 1963. The increase in national debt cannot be attributed to lower taxes because despite the massive tax cuts that occurred during Reagan’s Presidency, Federal tax revenue actually increased, from $728.1 billion in 1980 to $916.2 billion in 1989 (Inflation adjusted, 1987 dollars). Therefore the only cause of a ballooning national deficit and national debt would have to be increased spending. This defines for me the difference between the rhetoric of fiscal conservatism and the actual policy.

i bought a set for a rental car because i wanted to cross a mountain pass to get to grandbabies in Bend Oregon just after Christmas… and yes, i needed them. But, being the fiscal conservative that i am, i stopped at my brother’s in Portland on the way home and checked to see if my niece’s car could use them. They could… and she wanted to go skiing and got to take her own car. So now that expenditure has produced the greatest possible good.

Don’t you love my highly personal fable for how this fiscal conservative lives ;-)

i don’t know if anyone will ever replace Molly Ivens. Her sharp eyes and willingness to see absurdity are sorely missed. I often find myself wondering what Molly would think about all of this.

I can understand your desire for change… but i don’t think we can get there just by putting a fresh face in the white house.

I am so torn. When i listen to Obama, like everyone else who actually hears him, i am won by his charismatic charm. And maybe America does need a self esteem boost… to feel really good about who is leading them. If so, i truly believe he would deliver that.

But.. and here is where it gets tricky for me… I believe we have landed ourselves in one of the most complicated international and internal situations this nation has ever faced. In the words of one of the women at the anti-freeze meeting “i just can’t forget that he is a one term senator who spent most of that term campaigning”.

And.. i can’t forget that the Democratic party leadership is more focused on electing a democrat than on what that democrat produces once in office.

That is frightening to me.

I wish America could sit down with a one on one with Hillary… just one evening… I don’t think anyone would fail to realize how brilliant and dedicated she is. And that she has actually thought all of this through and has a plan for what she would do in office… not one for what would get her there. But his is America and that won’t happen.

As to Edwards as Commerce Secretary… now that is an interesting idea…

One of the things that Madeleine Albright said that i really valued was that it was necessary for our next President to fill the cabinet with people whose positions on issues were not identical to the president’s own… we have had enough of government by yes men and seen clearly what that produces.

Having debunked Ann Coulter and William Kristol, I hope we will now see reference to someone who actually supports a viable position for the Republicans… not innuendo and half truths.

And yes,i do believe there are viable Republican positions. I happen to come down on the other side of most of them… but truly enjoy learning from those who feel as passionately and rationally about their positions as i do about mine.

It would be good if this became a thinking discussion… presenting both sides clearly instead of the lobbed insults that FOX has taught us to think of as commentary.

I don’t believe that we will be withdrawing from Iraq until the Iraqi govt ratifies the oil agreement that basically gives a few large companies control of Iraqi oil.

I thought that had happened, but my hubby who watches such things closely tells me it has not been ratified.

Until then, or until we make the rules change… we are stuck propping up a weak govt that is unwilling to make the compromises it needs to function.

In the meantime, we are increasing hatred for the United States with every day we spend there… thus increasing our own personal terrorist risk. Not to mention losing any credibility in World politics.

Any plumber can deal with the water leak whether it be soldered copper or flare/compression fittings. They will tell you if they are liscened and bonded for whatever system you have. There is a plumbers reccomendation thread elsewhere in these forums.

I do my own.

Is it leaking where you can see the pipe? Is it leaking at a fixture/radiator/ PEX hose? In side the wall?

Do whatever is necessary to stop further damage/danger while you shop around.

For replacement and re configuration I used Brennan. No complaints but they were not the cheapest bid. I threw out the cheapest bid based on word of mouth and it seems others on this forum have the same opinion of a local company.

William Kristol is neither stupid nor uneducated.

This does not seem to stop him from letting his ideology overrule the evidence, the history of the region, or the reports from those on the ground.

Also note, as “Dan Quayle’s Brain” in the Regan Administration, he knew first hand much of the information he continually seems to ignore.

I have used Seattle Hardwoods for both of my houses. I have been very happy with the work and the staff.

I was just up at the Farmers Market discussing this with Russ who provides great organic produce every week.

I left behind a great garden on my 1.5 acres in Sammamish. Now I am in new soil, I worry about other polutants in the city, water run off, etc.

I am also faced with the challage of minimal space, so I also need to learn about container gardening.

I will call around this week to a few of the organic farmers to see if they would be open to “visitors”, is anyone up for a field trip?

or are any of you up to doing show- and tell in your garden?

Since Rose herself does your nails, it is not the typical “nail shack of revolving people”.

I also prefur to have my own box of nail assesories ( most salons will store it for you and provide a storage bin.)

She was recomended to me a few months ago. Rose even opened up her salon on a closed day for me the day before my wedding for my daughter and I to get our nails done.

yes, the Clintons were investigated at least 2 other times before and it was in the wake of the 3rd investigation that they finally found their smoking clinton gun… sorry i couldn’t resist the pun… of a sexual escapade… which they then proceeded to use to embarass the President.

Long story short.. had the Mr Clinton admitted to the sexual escapade up front, there would have been exactly nothing to charge him with. It was only when he tried to keep that incident private… not public… that anything was found after 3 long investigations.

That does nothing to dismiss the fact that the country’s energy had been repeatedly focused on the continuing “need” to investigate the Clintons on any pretext possible. That was a huge waste of taxpayer money and diverted attention from things that we now know should have received a lot more attention.

It’s apparant that you believe in the smoking gun theory… there is no investigation unless there was something to investigate and if nothing was found.. then they just didn’t look far enough. I don’t. i just see it as a tremendous waste of time and energy. And in the end.. much ado about very little.

If you really want the government out of your private business, how do you justify it’s poking it’s nose into Bill Clinton’s? Just because it could.

Well, it can poke itself into yours just as easily… in fact more easily now with the patriot act. Just ask those Americans who have been caught in the crossfire of suspicion because their name is similar to someone else’s or because they happened to marry someone of middle eastern descent.

As for Saddam funding terrorism, again, there were no links to his funding of Al Quaida.. and Al Quaida was responsible for 911.

Was he a terrorist. Yes. He certainly terrorized his own people. Would he have funded terrorist acts against the United states if he had been able to afford them, control them and directly benefit from them. Probably.

But, our own government has done the same. Does that mean that someone should unilaterally invade us and depose our president if someone other than us terrorizes them? Probably not.

I resent a bunch of political cronies deciding to spend my countries resources (time, money & attention) on continuing groundless prosecutions such as those that were conducted against the Clintons without asking the American people whether they thought this was worthwhile.

I resent my President deciding that we are going to invade another country and using an unconnected terrorist act as justification.

I resent my congress not being given all the information available before voting to fund such a course because they are entrusted with being the check on such unilateral actions.

I resent the bulk of money for fighting terrorism being spent in Iraq and not directed towards the root of AlQuaida.

I resent the use of private security forces such as Blackwater in Iraq without oversight and the attempt to make them immune from all prosecution. I don’t believe that the American people even know the extent of the use our White House has made of private “security forces” Blackwater in our own country (New Orleans being the most blatant example)…and i don’t remember hearing about congressional authorization for that.

I resent the appropriations for disaster relief in New Orleans being used to fund “urban renewal” instead of aiding the actual victims of that disaster.

I resent that my President decided to trust his “gut feeling” that Global Warming was misrepresented and that his office censored EPA officials who tried to voice the scientific consensus.

No, I don’t want decisions that affect my safety and well being made for me.

I could go on and on as to the number of decisions my President and his office have made for me without asking. In fact, in some cases, totally ignoring and going against public opinion.

Not one of those were decisions were made by the democratic party for me.

So i have to ask about the relevance of that statement Was it was just pandering to emotion?

As a democrat, I admit, i would prefer that if my government was going to subsidize anything, i prefer people over corporations and those in need over the rich.

if nothing else, as a fiscal conservative, i think it is pure stupidity not to fund prevention programs like basic health care, nutrition, education and after school programs in favor of funding prisons and burdening our health care system by delivering health care to the indigent through the most expensive venue possible… our hospital emergency rooms… Those of us who are insured get to directly pick up the tab for that. That’s all a waste of my money when we could spend less on prevention and get more benefit..

Nothing emotional about that… though i admit i feel very strongly about all of those issues.

You can call that a rant if you like.

As for Ann.. i think all of America has spent far too much time and attention on her misdirection.

And for the last bit.. patriotism. i was careful to define how i used the word patriotism and in that context it is a true statement.

The democrats have had the power to pursue direct investigations of presidential and vice-presidential misconduct for some time and have chosen to focus the nations resources on ending the conflict in Iraq that they probably wouldn’t have chosen if all the facts had been available to them. They have chosen to focus on the nation’s priorities… little things like national security and the economy… over protracted and messy political investigations and subsequent prosecutions.

They haven’t desisted because there isn’t plenty that ought to be investigated and prosecuted… or because their constituents want them to hold back. It just isn’t a justifiable use of resources at this point… it isn’t in the country’s best interests.

Caring about your country’s best interests over your own political gain is patriotism.

I’m done. As Ken has pointed out, there are more important things to do right now.

WS Mom, yes, some of us were personally impacted by 9/11. I watched it burn and collapse from my Manhattan office building. I walked among the triage unit of the WTC victims who looked like the walking dead. My husband was unemployed for 18 months after he lost his job a few weeks prior to 9/11 because they gave job search preference to people who lost jobs on 9/11 (thankfully he was laid off – he would’ve been at the WTC at the time of the attack, but it was still hard). And a member of our church was killed that day. But I still don’t support the war and never have.
