    Hi Sue:

I am not an expert, but here’s my method for growing massive quantities of tomatoes every year…

    1) Place the plant in the sunniest spot you can find. With our mild climate, tomatos need as much direct sunlight as possible.

    2) Water nearly every morning, unless we have significant rain, then you can skip a day, but pretty much I water the roots (not the plant) everyday.

    3) Feed your soil with compost. Even folks in apartments can pretty easily have a worm bin, composted soil is amazing.

    4) In mid-July or so, take your garden clippers and trim up your tomato plant to force the plant to use it’s energy to produce fruit not more leaves. I cut off the branches with no flowers on them. Here’s a link to show you what I’m talking about: http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_july_1b_tomato.asp

    5) Grow at least one “Early Girl” variety of tomato plant. I’m a big believer in Early Girl’s because I know that I’ll have ripe fruit by August even if we have a cloudy rainy summer. It’s nice to plant other varietals for fun & flavor, but the Early Girls have won my heart by coming through year after year. Last year some folks complained that their tomatoes never ripened, I froze 25 gallons of tomatoes for use this winter (just used the last gallon a couple of weeks ago).

Talk to the people at West Seattle Nursery regarding containers, they have always steered me in the right direction.

I’m a believer in gardening to elevate my mood. Gardening forces me to be outside in whatever weather, it makes me feel good to know that I’m doing something that will benefit the health of not only my family, but in a small way, the earth by improving and enriching the soil. I’m a recent convert to gardening. I started out on Sept 12, 2001 planting a few lavender plants in my front yard while feeling very upset and worried about the state of our world. I remember digging and digging and pulling and pulling weed after weed while praying for the families in NYC and feeling so frustrated that we didn’t have a more reasonable administration to deal with this situation. Day after day, I ignored the laundry piling up and continued to pull up weeds and head to WS Nursery for cheap 4 inch pots of plants to go in place of the weeds. Slowly, I found I was feeling better, my yard was looking better, and that I actually didn’t have such a brown thumb after all. Honestly, if I can have a successful garden, anyone can.

I am a would-be gardener who would like to start a small container vegetable garden. Not sure what I’d like to plant, other than tomatoes since my husband is obsessed with them. :) Are there resources that any of you would suggest for a novice on finding out about how to go about growing veggies in containers, what types/size containers to use, and what varieties of plants do well in containers? I’d rather not invest the money in this to go ahead and kill everything. :) I’ve never tried growing my own vegetables before.

Does anyone have any experience with a trustworthy and reliable dog walker? We will be on vacation and need someone to walk our two dogs twice a day, as well as feed them and give them some love. They will also need to check cat’s food occasionally and possibly water a plant or two if needed. No need to stay over in the house.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

I started a garden a couple weeks ago. So far it looks to be putting along. The most recent pictures I have are about 5 days old. I’m a little behind in taking pictures, I’m aiming to do pictures every 3 days and building a grow diary.

I haven’t gotten around to setting up the pages for the grow diary, so here are a couple pictures from the fifteenth:

I’ve since moved the basil out as it was getting scorched from the sun. It’s doing better now that it is in partial shade. I’m going to have to find some herbs to fill in the two spaces in the soda crate now.

Thanks, Josie. Loving Hands has two toddler openings right now & I’ve been in contact with her to see if an infant spot will open soon. But I hadn’t heard of Bella Mente!

I did not have a good experience at WS Optix. My exam was over in about 3 minutes, he changed my prescription, and they then filled my glasses with the wrong type of lens (after forgetting about me for a week). The whole time I was there I felt rushed and overlooked. A year later I had another exam which put me back in my old prescription. This was several years ago. They were pleasant and polite, but I will not go back.

I tried All About Kids last year but they had a huge waiting list…that may have changed though. my neighbor uses Bella Mente behind Jefferson Square and loves it, in fact she works there now. My son goes to Loving Hands Childcare Preschool, 206-763-7047. I am not sure if she has any openings but I can ask (will post here if so). Our son has been going there since he was 8 weeks and loves it; she has a few sibling pairs there.

I love Illusions too. I get my hair cut by Rita. She’s great and so is the rest of the staff. I first went there 5 years ago because of their no tip policy and because their employees were actual ’employees with benefits’. Glad I went.

proud athiest weighing in here. This is all about someone putting themselves in a position where a child trusts them – and abusing that trust. It could be a priest, a rabbi, daycare provider, party clown or a US Congressman….it’s all the same.

Except researching what the Bible does have to say on the topic and then to think it through rationally to see if it makes sense. Also, read my explanation to Jan above about interpretations.

Would it be a fair interpretation of your comment if I thought it said, “The Bible is the best resource for all of life’s answers! End of story.”? Is that what you were implying?

Okay, I love Husky Deli. I love their ice cream, I love their sandwiches, I love their raspberry filled homemade scones that are incredibly yummy, and Jack is probably the nicest close talker in West Seattle…but, the place needs a clean bathroom, a good dusting and new floors. There, I said it, it’s time for sprucing up the place, IMHO.

I’ve never had an issue with the hours of operation, works fine for me. Husky Deli is the essence of West Seattle. Jack and his family are so generous with our schools, local charities and sports teams. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a fundraiser where something wasn’t donated by Husky Deli.

I was waiting for Ken to come and tell us what is right and what is wrong. Thank you Ken!

I don’t think it’s alarmist at all, I think that it is something to be aware of and to consider so that there are solid definitions in place.

Why all the negative comments about right wingers? Is everyone that threatened? What gives people? I thought the point of debate was to do just that?

In defense of Admiral’s Pub, a group of us were there celebrating one night and were actually politely and tactfully cut off at one point to “slow us down”. They also made sure our DD was drinking nothing but water and soda. In fact I believe her soda was on the house… We had a wonderful time and there was no hard feelings on either side. We stayed a long time to wind down before we left.

I didn’t see what Dazzlespace saw, but from my understanding resturaunts and bars are typically pretty careful about over serving and letting people go driving due to dram shop insurance. If someone leaves absolutely wasted and gets in an accident, legally speaking the establishment could be sued for their part in the situation. (At least that was the lay of the land when I wrote a paper on it in college a few years ago…)

**Dazzlespace is just on a rampage. I was on another thread where he/she warped it with hostility. Kind of wrecks it for the rest of us.

wes…you misunderstood…it’s not about all christians….just those that hide behind the “banner”…..who LEAD the megachurches and are not who they tell you and me to be….or the politicians who LEAD, by advocating one way, stand up and state beliefs one way (and sometimesinfluence and pass laws), and then break those very personal beliefs themselves. I suppose I hold them to a higher standard and shake my head…these are grown men, with choices..they can’t all stand behind “sickness’…they don’t have some big boogieman standing over them twisting their arms to do these things…they put themselves out there as moral compasses…that old saying “methinks they doth protest too much”…so please don’t misunderstand…this isn’t about the christian, spiritual, religious or non-religious or whatever who just live good lives knowing right from wrong , this is about the guys who LEAD that way, and make those choices…hypocrisy. This guy was a pastor…he knew better…but it isn’t just because he’s a pastor…it’s been ultra-conservative politicians, too. It has nothing to do with his being a “church person” per se..it’s about his position in that church.

I deplore this behavior in anyone..but particularly those who seek to influence by “preaching” the “moral” way.

That definition of sin? That’s your interpretation of God’s laws, 10 commandments, the bible, etc…it may not be everyone’s..just a thought…religion/beliefs etc can be complicated, can’t they? You interpret one way that works for you…your neighbor may interpret another way that works for him/her. Neither is wrong..just different.

I sometimes read the housing wanted boards at Craigslist when I’m bored, and I’ve seen your ad on there, Jiggers. One thing I might suggest to you is that you tell a little about yourself. Honestly, if I had a room to rent (which I don’t) and had seen your ad, I probably wouldn’t have called because I don’t know your first name, whether you’re a man or woman, age range, are you working, etc. With a competitive market for inexpensive rooms/apartments, I’d think somebody needs to tell a prospective roommate or landlord why they are worth picking up the phone to call over somebody else. Also, I have a feeling that at the price point you’re looking for, you aren’t going to find anything unless you open yourself up to the WS neighborhoods that you specifically mention you don’t want to consider. As a renter myself, that’s just my observation of the market right now.

    JenV…that was wonderful…lolol…love Dave Barry

jiggers…how big a place do you get for your $875/mo.?

It’s a shame that you can’t find someone to go halfsies or threesies on renting a house…would cut expenses…but not seem like you’re “renting a room” that you can’t leave for the rest of the place. I understand how difficult it will be going from living alone to living with a stranger…I’ve lived alone since my divorce in 95(except for a few years with my daughter)…and I love it. I’ve made it happen so far…but it hasn’t been easy. I work at home, so would be difficult to share…I see clients here..and don’t see how it would work.

Best of luck..still keeping my eyes open for ya…
